The Past Ain't What It Used To Be...

The first Command & Conquer received its last official update on the 21st of June, 1996. Since then, the game has been ported to Windows (as "Gold" version), and re-released in the big "The First Decade" collection pack, but has never received any more bug fixes.

The C&C Gold Patch 1.06 project aims at bringing this classic into the new millennium, by fixing the old bugs, supporting higher resolutions, and adding new modding and mapping possibilities. It also contains an addon-based language system, allowing anyone to create translation packs for the game.

Due to a small error in the full game installer, the desktop icon for CnCNet doesn't work as it should. The icon should run CnCNet.exe, but instead simply points to C&C95.exe. This means that running the shortcut will not make you connect online as it should, but will just run the game normally.

I have updated the installer pack now, but if you downloaded the pack before April 9 2012, you will have an incorrect CnCNet desktop shortcut.

Note that this does not apply to people who only downloaded the patch; the patch doesn't make any desktop shortcuts. Only the full game installer is affected.

The incorrect shortcut will look like this:

icon with GDI and Nod logos, and the name 'cncnet.exe'

The icon should show up like this:

icon with orange fading text saying 'CnCNet'

So if you have an incorrect icon, open its properties, and make it point to "cncnet.exe" instead of "C&C95.exe"

I did the patch and now I can only build buildings right next to one another, I cannot remember if it was always like that. But I swear yesterday i was able to build atleast a space or so apart from another structure and now I cannot. Is that a problem with the patch or can I change it myself(if so, how do I do that)

That's always been like that in C&C1. Later games changed that, but C&C1 always had it like that. You must've been playing RA1 before.

Probably because your graphics card or monitor don't accept it. It's kind of a non-standard resolution. The normal 4:3 resolution for it is 640x480; the only reason C&C95 has 640x400 is because it's the exact double of the old DOS C&C 320x200 resolution (which isn't 4:3 but 8:5)

In CCConfig, there are two ways to get around that:

1. Set the resolution to 640x480, make sure the Scaling Filter at the bottom is either "Nearest" or "Linear", and check the "Use original C&C aspect ratio" box. This will give you 640x400 stretched to 640x480, as the game was intended to be viewed.

2. Set the resolution to 640x400, check the "Stretch to custom resolution" box, set the stretch resolution to 640x480, and set the Scaling Filter to "Center". This will give you 640x400 centered in a 640x480 box, exactly like the original C&C95's "640x480" option did.

Another possibility is to set the resolution to 640x400, check the "Stretch to custom resolution" box, set the stretch resolution to 1280x800, and set the Scaling Filter to "Center".

This will give you the game exactly as it would look in 640x400, while the real resolution is simply doubled. And since 1280x800 is a common widescreen resolution, it should be accepted.

If it isn't... you can always play windowed ;)

Thanks! And, it's mostly just me, actually :)

Well, on the hacking front anyway. Despite not being directly involved in the patch creation, hifi definitely deserves some credit for creating the CnC-DDraw dll ( Hifi.iki.fi ) and the new CnCNet system ( Cncnet.org ), and I could never have done it without my faithful 2-man translator team keeping the French and German documentation up-to-date.

I have an FAQ for a reason, you know... and even if that question isn't explicitly in there (the answer is though, on the question whether it works on The First Decade), the fact the FAQ web page's title says "Command & Conquer Gold patch 1.06c Revision 2" should've been a hint.

Further hints are found in the names and descriptions of the available downloads right above this comments section.

This is based on the Gold Edition and will only work on the Gold Edition or the First Decade.
