The Past Ain't What It Used To Be... The first Command & Conquer received its last official update on the 21st of June, 1996. Since then, the game has been ported to Windows (as "Gold" version), and re-released in the big "The First Decade" collection pack, but has never received any more bug fixes. The C&C Gold Patch 1.06 project aims to bring this classic into the new millennium, by fixing the old bugs, supporting higher resolutions, and adding new modding and mapping possibilities. It also contains an addon-based language system, allowing anyone to create translation packs for the game.
This image shows a size comparison between the original 320x200 DOS C&C, the standard 640x400 view area of the original C&C95, and the full 1024x768 resolution added by the 1.06 patch.
Note that some other changes are also visible (in the 1.06 part of the image), like the rocket launcher's turret, the Construction Yard's shadow, and the fixed top of the highest icons in the sidebar.
I can see the new resolution become a problem with small maps such as the first GDI map since it's mainly used for scouting Infantry.
Well, for the first 3 missions on either side there's a black area outside it, but it's not really a problem. The only real issue is that the radar minimap crashes on that, but since you can't build a Comm. Centre yet in the first 3 missions, this problem doesn't normally appear in the campaign.
There's a list of bugs and oddities, and their solutions, in the patch release notes on the website (and included the patch itself, of course).
So far, the only REAL issue with high resolution is that for some reason, the game refuses to let you place buildings on the lowest row of the map. A building is technically placed on its upper left corner position though, so this is only an issue for buildings that are only 1 cell high, like the fence types and low-tech defence buildings.
under seige :D
