Eastern Front is a free mod for Company of Heroes. Following the ethos of mimicking a Relic Entertainment expansion pack, Eastern Front has succeeded in adding two full new factions, the Soviet Red Army and the German Ostheer, packed with unique and exciting units to the existing armies - a feat never before achieved in the Company of Heroes world.

So after sometime I came and replayed this mod (I stopped around 1.2ish) with a desire to see how the Ostheer was. I left, disappointed?
Certainly some level of disappointment as about, I felt much of the same playing as the Ostheer but this could be due to what seems like bugged AI as the two standard (USSR) bots only built engineers and only tried to capture a terriory once. Though I am willing to chalk this down as nothing (I am much too familiar with crappy AI (see Blitzkrieg Dingo spam AI)), but even then the Ostheer seems a bit too standard.
When I first played this mod it had a completely new faction, one never seen before in CoH and this is why I played it until I finally stopped. The Ostheer do not invoke the same joy as when I first played as the Soviets when I first got this mod. There are only a few really new additions to the mix and the units which were added are not that amazing. The Pz.II Luch is basically an armoured Puma and the Kugelblitz is a duel barrel Ostwind.
Overall, I really don't feel like this mod hasn't advanced as much as it should. For all the new hype, most of it seems to be only the same things and that disappoints me. 4/10
This mod is very nice and well done ...until you start to play it
russian side absolutely unbalanced, their tanks are weak and cost too much with low range and accuracy. Until I buy t34 enemy is swarming with stugs and anti tank guns (paks are understructible by russian tanks, no one can hit them and even if they hit them they need several shots to be destroyed, yes, guns with thin metal plate to cover crew is strong like tank and they always behave like snipers behin enemy lines)
stug vs kv-1 - stug always wins, his cannon is much more accurate and have longer range and takes only little damage from frontal hit of kv or t34 and cost 50% less gas... why? because f*** thats why :D
Good mod, but the Soviet faction is not for me. It's right now nerfed against the Germans, who can easily destroy them. I believe the main problem is that the units are overpriced. 50 munitions (under one doctrine choice) to upgrade a Conscript squad with a few extra rifles they are horrible with anyway?
I'm fine with the Conscripts being as weak as they are, but even when I'm playing as Wehrmacht or Panzer Elite I can literally CRUSH all their infantry easily just by spamming Volks or Grenadiers. With a little micro, their Conscripts will miss the molotovs and it will be gg when they keep throwing away the remaining munitions.
However, it is a good, solid mod that had a lot of work put into it. For this, I respect the team who made it. My only recommendations would be to buff the Soviets a little bit and buff the Jagdtiger (it's practically shittier than the Jagdpanther in every way except health even though it's got an amazing cannon). Its damage should be higher.
Can't wait for the Ostheer. I might even change my opinion of the mod alone if the Ostheer are added.
Best COH Mod I have played. You can tell the folks really worked hard on this one, you can hardly tell it wasn't meant to be that way from the start. The Russians are made very realistically and they play great. The only thing AT ALL that I would have to say negatively is the game seems to crash a bit more if it goes on for too long, and occasionally an AI ally will seemingly do nothing at all. But honestly those are so few are far between the rest of the Mod outshines it. I can't wait to see what they do next.
