Description

Since the beginning of time, source has constrained the lambertian shading to '0 to 1' in order to shade the low poly models effectively in their Gouraud shading architecture. Since episode 1, the engine has used phong shading on character models, but it still constrained it to 0-1 to smooth the falloff. I always sort of thought this was the cheater's way of doing it. Now that we have basic, low-frequency GI simulates, it seems as though we'll be kicking this habit and shading with straight phong shading, because the hard falloffs, if any, will be masked by the model's dynamic ambient
