yes but a single air-surface missile from 5km away would have reduce the A/C (aircraft carrier) to dust

The United States Navy has several lines of defense, they first have the E2 Hawkeye for airborne early warning and they'd have a CAP (Combat Air Patrol), usually F/A 18s whether they're Foxtrots or Echos (Super Hornets) or some squadrons still fly the old Charlies (Regular Hornets without improved engines or wing surface area). Then the fleet would have an aegis missile defense system integrated with the CIWS (Close In Weapon System). The CIWS is used as a LAST resort. Note, fleets have the aegis missile defense system on Ticonderoga class Cruisers. So, a Russian aircraft could not fly this close to a carrier, it's impossible unless there are specific bilateral treaties in place between the two countries. Additionally, while a fleet is underway, the ships can't even see each other. The battle group does not patrol the battle space in such a formation.
