This mod is for all the players frustrated with the cartoony nature of Zero Hour units and buildings. We intend to replace every fanciful unit in Zero Hour with its closest possible real world equivalent, without changing the unit's capabilities.
Replacement for the Chinese Helix helicopter.
Holy Crap! This is some beautiful work! Great job!
What unit will this beauty replace?
Sorry, hadn't added it to the description yet. The Mi-8 will be replacing the Helix helicopter (which as of v0.4 is a Hind).
I thought you said the Hind would be more fun to play with?
China doesn't have hinds.
Indeed.
Actually they do but they aren't used by the Military. On the Minsk world there is a Mi-24 of unknown origin in Russian markings.
Api.ning.com
so thats where I left it......I tell yea, vodka.
And now i wish that there were the russians... damn
I think it seems less strong but more realistic than the helix.

Amazing, I love the Mi-8!
Will the model change with the different upgrades?
Yep.
Here are the likely configurations:
Napam bomb Upgrade (Fab-100 or Fab-250) would look like the following:
I132.photobucket.com
Gattling Gun Upgrade would add Gunpods (upk-23?) similar to the following:
En.valka.cz
Finally bunker upgrade would deploy MG's (Type-88 ?) on the side of the helicopter either through the doors or through the back similar to the following:
Scale-rotors.com
Here's an actual picture of the Mi-171 with Fab bombs:

This example is in PLA service.
why not the halo? :(
PLA doesn't field Mi-26. And it can't carry any weapons.
Mi-26 is a heavy military transport helicopter that does not have any weapon configurations that can resemble the Helix.
Besides the Mi-26 is not operated by the PLA.
The Mil MI-6 would be more appropriate, it would also be unique. I dont think its ever been in a game.
No it won't be. It can't carry any weapons.
I'm feeling like a broken record...
S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl has the crashed helicopter in Yantar near the swamp and it is a Mi-6.
To rkraptor, the Mi-8 cant carry a 70 ton tank, so they both of unrealisms. To Bossgeneral, With how much S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I play I can't believe I missed that. >_<
MI6 was used by liquidators, but not because of the armament, but rather in its intended "flying hook" role.
Mi 6 is retired for already some years...
Just because its retired dosent mean it cant be pulled back into service for some urgent requirement.
keksz,
Perhaps with upgrades you can introduce the Mi-17V5 variant which changes the glazed nose and has a modified appearance similar to the following:

It's also currently lacking the markings/roundels similar to these:

Oh hehe I just uploaded the pic but doctorheredoctor is the man to talk to xD
It's been a while since I worked on VRM effictevly because I'm busy with my own mod :P
But as you can see he does a totally fine job without me aswell.
Oh, I'm so proud... :P
Thanks I apologize for the confusion there.

Also China doesn't use the Mi-8 it is known as the Mi-17/171 in PLA Army Aviation service.
Nope. PLAAF has 20.
Peoples Liberation Army Aviation operates the vast majority of the Mi-17 and improved Mi-17 variants. They are gradually being upgrades to Mi-171 variants with various configurations and equipment/payload packages.
I would recommend adding the roundels and markings as shown in these pictures:

Currently the texture has no markings and the incorrect roundel (that kind of roundel is used on Ground Vehicles). Additionally this model needs some equipment that is seen in those pictures such as the nose-sensors and the tail pod.

I can't go back and change things on every single model. You can be proactive and let me know specific things that won't be apparent in blueprints if they are critical. I cannot emphasize enough how painfully difficult it can be to retroactively adjust things in models/skins depending on the situation.
I spend usually 6h+ per day for 4-5 days to fully model, unwrap, skin, and then place the unit functionally in-game. Normally you don't have one person doing virtually everything so it takes extremely long and it isn't fun to have to always go back and spend another few hours every time there is some stupid detail misplaced. We're going for reality but to make every unit 100% real is a waste of my time. 99% of players don't zoom in to enjoy the detail and accuracy of these models and they might as well have much lower resolution texture with much less accuracy in the model(who can tell if a tank is 5% too long visually?). As a result there is a cut-off point of what should and should not be accurately represented in a model. The sensor boom on the nose was an example of something that I wouldn't add because it was too small to require geometry and couldn't be represented in the skin. The markings are extremely low priority as well as camoflage accuracy (this is because there are factions in game that do not exist IRL at all and so camo can be arbitrary).
Later this year I may need to almost permanently stop work on VRM so I'm trying to do what I can in the time remaining.
Finally I am certain China does have Mi-8 and tbh the differences are superficial enough once ingame that I really don't care because this is how it actually looks at zoom level: I.imgur.com
> I can't go back and change things on every single model
I never asked that or implied that.
> You can be proactive and let me know specific things that won't be apparent in blueprints if they are critical
It's in the forum posts the necessary pictures and information that I provide.
> We're going for reality but to make every unit 100% real is a waste of my time
Again never asked for that or implied that.
> The sensor boom on the nose was an example of something that I wouldn't add because it was too small to require geometry and couldn't be represented in the skin
This Engine allows the player to zoom in various levels and this detail isn't trivial. You could overlay the geometry on the existing UV map which wouldn't require changes to the texture map.
> he markings are extremely low priority as well as camoflage accuracy
This is actually quite easy to do in Photoshop and requires little to no time assuming that Layers are used. All it requires is a Text layer with some blending options and various fill/opacity. The roundel should normally be Normal perhaps with some weathering and 100% opacity.

Would love to have someone else take a look at it.
Aside from that the model and texture is great. This is the perfect replacement for the Hind which is not used by the PLAAF but rather used by the KPAAF.
i really love this :D chopper
This is just too cute to say "Let's ruin somebody's day" or anything mean like that ^^
Yet in real life the Mi-8 ruined a lot of peoples day.
This chopper is the bad guy chopper of the western world, because its combination with MI 24 was lethal against rebels. And itself can still be a difficult opponent especially its cockpit is resistance to small arm fire, although any AA gun or short range defense could bring it down.....
Very nice model, I am glad to see Mi-8/17 as Helix, and if I can suggest, can you make that this helicopter less leaning forward?
Man, that is one nice-looking Hip.
Why was the Helix replaced? I understand that model should be replaced, but China does operate KA-27s/Ka-29s, and the KA-29, the assault gunship version of the KA-27, can carry bombs. Although I'm not hating on the Hip, just curious.
The most appropriate would be the helicopter Ka-31
