Bystander is a multiplayer mod for quake III, based on the concept that your enemy is one of many faces in the crowd. The idea being that you must first identify your enemy, before hunting them down. This places a heavy dependence on tactics and observation, rather than free for all bullet spraying.

-At the beginning of each round, one player is randomly selected to play as the assassin.
-The remaining players are assigned the role of bounty hunters.
-The assassin’s objective is to kill a computer controlled VIP, and escape the level via a predetermined exit point.
-The Bounty Hunter’s objectives are simply to kill the Assassin.

The game is also populated with computer controlled civilian characters that simply walk around the level, going about their business. The key factor however, is that every player is dressed in civilian clothing! The assassin, the bounty hunters, and the AI civilians, will feature no visual characteristics that could differentiate their character type, thus making it incredibly difficult to know whether or not you are facing your enemy or just a regular Joe off the street!
In order to create the atmosphere of realism, weapons can be hidden away, and drawn when needed. This tactic will be vital, as the AI civilians will react accordingly to seeing a madman running around with a gun, or to seeing someone get shot down in front of them. Such reactions will include frenzied running and screaming - an act that would surely draw attention to the perpetrator, who at this point would stand out as the only person in the crowd holding a shotgun. As both the assassin and the bounty hunters alike will be penalized for killing civilians, players must be careful to ensure their prospective target is in fact another player and not an innocent bystander. The real challenge of this game is being able to dispose of your enemies in a manner that does not expose yourself as a potential target. A vital tactic would include the ability to blend in to the crowd, making certain that one’s actions do not distinguish themselves as a killer.

Blog RSS Feed Report abuse Latest News: Bystander needs a test server!

3 comments by mochumbo on Aug 4th, 2002

Bystander and our team is constantly growing and time has come for an urgent request. We really need access to a decent game server that we can do closed tests on. These closed tests are vital to ensure that we remove the major problems before we release the mod to the larger community. As well as for debugging purposes we will be able to balance and stress test the server to find the right blend of civilians and players. The benefits of providing server usage? Why you too get to test and play the mod before anyone else, plus bragging rights to being the first official beta tester of Bystander... OK, all right so its not much at all, but its all we have to offer.

Requirements:
* A server & internet connection which is capable of hosting a standard Quake3 deathmatch game to 16 players
* It would be nice if the server runs linux (we haven't tested on linux yet)
* The administrator should have experience in running dedicated Quake3 servers
* The administrator will probably need lots of patience, we still have lots of work to go and crashes are most likely inevitable.

If anyone can help us out, it will be greatly appreciated, so if you have the hardware, the time, the patience and are interested in this mod give us an email! Detailing your experience and server hardware.
