Good news! It's not neccesary to compile GZDoom to play on linux :D If you've got any Debian-based distro like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Peppermint, etc, you can install the binaries from the repository found in this site:

Linux failed me again. This is the fourth tutorial I have tried. The directories either don't end up where they are supposed to be (My Zdoom is in opt, not usr) and I cannot get the game to recognise the WAD files UNLESS I double-click the icon. Terminal won't pick up WADs. Changing the INI file does nothing. And even if I can get the game to run, I can't get the brutaldoom pk3 to run.

I don't know if you figure this problem out but if it's not picking up the WAD then you haven't set the directory correctly. If you compile it yourself you can set the libs with LD_LIBRARY_PATH. If it's picking up the game with the icon than it means you're not typing the full path to the wad.
