This mod literally made me buy Doom II-- I'm not kidding. When developer Sargent Mark IV took a look at Doom, he probably said to himself "Hmm, yes, this was the absolute height of first person shooters back then; but, it's kind of become a bit outdated over the years. Let me fix that over 4 years by making the most award winning mod ever created." Sarge, if you're reading this (which I honestly doubt you are), John Romero would be proud.
As if Doom was controversial enough back in 1993 for how violent it was, just imagine if this mod was shown to the public back then; some people would faint, others would probably have their heads explode from how awesome it is (kind of like that kid in the STRAFE trailer). Anyway, what about the mod itself; what does it improve? Take a good five minute look at this mod, and then you'll see the difference.
You can blow limbs off, blood spatters against the walls, heads explode, all of the weapons have been improved, there's a Duke Nuem style kick, and you can even tell enemies to go **** themselves; did I say that this is the greatest mod ever? The options menu has also been greatly improved, meaning that you're not limited to five things, yay! There's also mouse aiming and crouching, a feature that comes with either Zandronum or DoomGZ.
The name "Brutal Doom" isn't just there for the gore factor; it legitimately feels much harder than the original Doom. Your character's not the only one who feels stronger; Imps run, throw much more faster fire balls, and jump at you, soldiers move quicker, shoot much faster, and even if you blow their legs off and are bleeding to death they'll pull out a pistol and start shooting at you. All of the enemies have been improved to be more dangerous and, therefore, pose much more of a threat than they did before.
Even the visuals have been updated; an improved lighting engine, more particle effects, AA Filtering, and more animations have been added. All of the weapons feel soooo much smoother and look way cooler than they did before, too. It's honestly hard to imagine that one, single guy did this entire mod by hand all in his free time.
Some of the minor complaints I have about this mod is that it's kind of a hassle to switch weapons; you can't really see what order they go in, and when I'm wedged between 20 imps and 5 pinkies, it's kind of hard to go from shot gun to rocket launcher without going all over the place sometimes. A Half-Life style HUD would be nice, but maybe I'm asking a bit much for a Doom mod. But other than that, not many other issues.
I could go on about just how many features there are in this mod, but I would be here all day--and I really don't have that kind of time.
If you're a big fan of Doom, I urge you, install this mod right now; it's really easy to install, and is by far one of the greatest modifications of any game I've ever played, and a ground breaking achievement in gaming history. Oh yeah, you can also kick enemies in the balls; just play it already.

It's the first DOOM mod I've ever used, and simply the best. It largely builds upon the game, and yes it also changes it a bit, but it's nothing but improvements for me. I'm hoping everyone else enjoys it as much as I have. :) And to anyone who doesn't know why you can't use the weapons that are in the mod, you "MUST" choose DOOM Guy when you start the game. (You may even need to go to settings and into character customization to set your character to DOOM Guy.)
What do I really need to say here. A wonderful classic masterfully redone and updated for today's gamer. It's pure ******* chaos. Blood, guts and gibs galore. Not for the faint of heart or bitch of mind. I grew up on doom, and when my son is old enough to use a pc he can too. The Sargeant is a ******* genius. If you told me as a kid you can do even half of what he did to doom I wouldn't have believed it. Keep up the beautiful work, and thank you for helping doom kick more *** than I thought was possible!
Takes Doom and absolutely amplifies everything the original game does by about 666. The gameplay if faster paced, more challenging, and is overall more satisfying. It makes minor graphical improvements, and the monsters A.I. is completely revamped. Definitely the best Doom mod out there.
The work put into this is amazing, and I can't wait for v20 to come out. I've been playing this mod since years and I'm about to give it another go. It's not just a cosmetic change, it actually revamps gameplay to a style I really like a lot. Thank you for this mod :D
Love this mod. Adds things that make tons of sense, such as:
- Smoother animations
- Alt-fire functions (iron sights, firing one barrel at a time for the Super Shotgun)
- Dual wielding plasma rifles and assault rifles
- Advanced combat and monster behavior (for Doomguy and Monsters)
- Minor tweaks and edits (changed Arachnotron plasma to blue, Revenant torsos can crawl around and continue attacking you, Arch-Viles have horns, Imp/Infernotaur ball graphic enhancements, torch fire enhancements)
- Smart Marines
- HUGE GUTS!
Things I don't like / don't make sense:
- Pervasive cursing (though those controls can be avoided altogether...)
- Flipping off certain monsters, which makes them ****** at you. It'd be nice if when they're lowered to a certain point of health (such as halfway or two thirds of the way) that THEN they'd get ****** and fire faster and whatever.
- The Demon Strength Rune. A most useful item. But how come the monsters that drop it aren't more powerful than the rest? It makes no sense. Therefore, I demand there be a Super Imp... a mini-boss buffed Imp... which drops the Rune.
To the Brutal Doom haters, I say this:
Can you spend a little LESS time hating on how Sergeant Mark IV is such a horrible person, and a little MORE time actually critiquing the mod itself?
We're here to critique the MOD, and NOT the CREATOR of the mod. I get he's done numerous screwed up things, but that doesn't mean that the mod isn't a great mod to play.
I am a fan of Brutal Doom. Not a fanboy of Sarge. I respect Sarge and his mods, but I do not idolize them.
P.S.: If I may... weapon mods like Russian Overkill can really be improved by Brutal Doom. Watch them blow up into smithereens as only seen in the likes of mods such as Brutal Doom, and let the sky rain with the blood of your enemies... the HUGE GUTS of a fallen Cyberdemon... all with the press of a button!
I never gave a mod any review or points like at all, but a mod this great? and when somebody somehow give it a 1/10 for no reason ****** me off, so i'm giving this a 10/10
because it IS worth it

To put it simply, it's everything fans ever wanted for DooM. Even ID "steals" ideas from it, isn't it enough to give this mod a 10?
