This is exactly how Doom deserves to be played, fast, frenetic and violent as hell and the mods developer has clearly never settled for less than perfect in this mod. Even people who never played the original Dooms can get a feeling for just how much attention to detail the developer has put into this mod!

First of all let me say that I am something of a Doom snob. I generally consider any mod that messes with the core game play mechanics of the classic Doom episodes to the degree that Brutal Doom does, to be damn near sacrilegious.

However Brutal Doom is anything but sacrilegious. It is truly a glorious piece of work.

You can tell this is something that was worked on diligently for over two years. From the myriad of new sprite animations (watching a Pinky chow down on a Sargent it got into a fight with was awesome to say the least), new enemy attacks, and last but not least, an arsenal of weapons that is gratifying as hell to use.

Any fan of Doom and classic shooters should check out Brutal Doom. I mean like right now.

I rarely write reviews on mods / games but I decided to make an exception and drop a few lines to support my high rating on this awesome mod. I'm quite a few years older than majority of moddbers so I can clearly remember the day Wolf3D shareware was released and how hyped I was about it (truth be told, I was like 9 y.o. at the time) and I do remember how big of a revolution Doom shareware was when it was released. At the time that Doom and DoomII were released I didn't have an internet connection and I didn't really use BBSs so I didn't really know anything about WADs and I moved to newer games in the mid 90s (Duke3D, other Build engine games, Quake, later Unreal etc.) but from time to time I still ran good old Doom and to this day I'm surprised how fresh it still feels. My last "rendez vous" with Doom was a couple of years back when I played it on Xbox (don't judge me :) ) and then I heard on a certain vlog from Total Biscuit about Brütal Doom and how awesome it was. I kinda forgot about it until a few days ago when I finally decided to give it a shot. I'm pretty lost for words but all I'd like to say is that it really improves on good old Doom formula, action is tense and graphics (along with GZDoom) are really neat even if maps themselves are based on 2 decades old engine. It is one of few titles I've played in recent years when I wanted to play just another map, and then another, and another etc. Admittedly mod is a wee bit tricky to set up if you aren't into WADs but it's well worth your time. If Doom was ever near and dear to your heart or if this is going to be your first date with it I suggest you do it the Brütal way.

Words cannot express the amount of life this mod has breathed into DooM and the community.

swimming in gore, i approve

First its brutal like hell, eespecialy when YOU are in hell. First badbutt sounds, more Shotgun-pumping action to my very two (bloody) hands. One thing just to be sure. Is there a low-violence option without gore, blood, and disgusting things that you don't really see in real-life?

Please do me favor, don't tell my mom. ;)

Simply put: Over the top, gut splattering, Ripping and tearing action.

If you don't have this mod downloaded and you love DOOM, then you have not yet lived.


So... there was a DOOM. THen a DOOM2. And then a lot's of cool wads. TNT, Plutonia, etc...

And then there came an Brutal DOOM. It was sloppy at first. But... but with v20, with Project Brutality support and with some awesome plugins to it (like, say, HUD mods) it make a first old DOOM look... cooler. Better. With nice addition to guns, weapons and mechanics this game make old game better, but with same good old DOOM felling. And we have a big love for old DOOM here, in Russia.

So.. yeah. 10/10 for bringing old classic to the good shape!

What can I say that hasn't already been said? This mod doesn't just add blood and gore, it adds modern(relative to the old doom at least) fps elements to update doom. This is almost a total conversion, so many things have been tweaked and added, and yet it's pretty balanced over all. There are so many things done here besides modifying the base game that you can tell the author put his heart into it.

The only reason I don't give this a ten is because of the allied/rescued marines. There should be an option to turn them off completely(If there is, my apologies, I didn't find it in the options menus)and maybe some sliders so you can tweak them. I know you could just ignore them, but that doesn't "feel" right either. It's only a minor flaw in a great mod.

This mod makes the game more challenging, but also more fun. There were quite a few times I was left speechless or smiling from ear to ear. It's definitely worth a try, I can almost guarantee you'll like it.

This mod is everything you've come to expect from Brutal Doom, and more. The music is awesome, the gore is well implemented, the weapons are immensely satisfying, etc. However what keeps this mod from being a full 10/10 is the multitude of bugs I've been facing that hold it back a little.

For example, the sprites for some pickup items fail to disappear once you've collected them. This can get confusing in later levels where you're trying to get the ammo from all of the enemies you just killed, but you don't know whether you got it or not. The Hud also seems to be way too small for the newest version of this mod; making it difficult to manage your health and ammo during some of the more intense situations.

However, this mod is still one of my favourites to date, and stands out as one of the most fun, addictive, and intense modifications for any game out there. I HIGHLY recommend it.
