I guess it wasn't only like that, you can play Portal Stories: Mel if you're interested, there is a nice portable, but still old fashioned gun there. An BTW this very gun on the pic is based of the beta of Portal 1, so it is kinda canon.
PS:M is a fan made creation, so it shouldn't really account for canon (not saying I don't want it to be canon, it's a pretty nice mod).
Yes I know, but I mentioned PS:Mel's authors point of view on how they have depicted the possible look of an older portalgun model, and also to say that there must have been versions of portalgun between the 'vacuum' like version of the 50s and the one we see in canon (P1 and P2).
