Run. Think. Shoot. Live. Source.
Black Mesa is the Half-Life 2 total conversion of the original Half-Life game. Utilizing the Source engine and its endless array of possibilities and powers, Black Mesa will throw you into the world that started the Half-Life continuum and introduced Gordon Freeman to the world as a gun-toting, bullet-dodging Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics.
Black Mesa was built and founded on the principle that Half-Life: Source did not do the original title enough credit, regardless of the true intentions laid out with the release of Half-Life: Source by Valve Software. Subsequently in November 2004, Black Mesa was founded and set out to reconstruct the original title, giving it the new environments, models, and abilities it deserved on the Source engine. This total conversion will not require Half-Life: Source installed on your system to play, only a legitimate and working version of Half-Life 2. At the present time, Valve Software is not associated or involved with the development of this project.
Here is a small list of planned features of Black Mesa:
This mod is not dead, we are still hard at work on it.

Hello Black Mesa fans!
We come to you once again with an update. It's now the end of 2009, and we know many of you have literally counted the days down until this fateful month. We are floored by the level of support you have given us and are very excited we're so close to reaching our goal.
Unfortunately, to our great disappointment, Black Mesa will not make a 2009 release.
Cynics may now rejoice, bets may be collected, and I think a mod team member has to eat his shoe, but we hope our loyal fans will forgive us and realize that the delay will translate into a better final product that's (hopefully) more easily available to everyone.
Once again we apologize for what has to be very disappointing news. We placed a 2009 deadline on ourselves to motivate us and bring this 6 year project to a close. And while we didn't quite make it, we have come very close and you can expect a complete, polished game to hit your hard drives in the near future. We'll be sure and update if anything changes. Until then, hang tight, it's coming!

A higher-quality version of the Official Black Mesa Teaser Trailer

you two still arguing about this shit!!!
I 100% agree with you there, which is why I said: "arguably of a higher quality." I totally agree it's an opinionated thing, and I think anyone saying that their work is objectively better or worse than yours would be wrong.
The simple fact is both mods have a very high standard of quality. Famous for it. One recieved considerably more attention that the other, probably due to the popular I.P. One has recieved two awards in the time the other has recieved none, despite the other releasing more than twice the media. It's understandable to have some misgivings, although not at the Black Mesa team, as everyone agrees.
Let's leave it at that. I'd prefer to either end this discussion or take it away from the profile. If anyone would like further information, simply P.M. me.
Feel free to make some suggestions Kester ;)
The reply I had in mind for this wouldn't be appropriate, so I'll keep quiet and say that I'm equally annoyed at both as well as several other things
Oh and methulah, the quality of the media release is all a matter of opinion, I personally think their work could use some improvements and move away from the clichés I see in their work. But that, again, is totally my opinion.
My point Wraiyth, is that you shouldn't be annoyed with us for receiving an award, you should be annoyed at the people the gave the award.
On the point of Nate's comments, I actually feel a comment like "your maps are bland" is constructive. I've always been in the firm belief that you don't have to offer someone advice on how to improve something for it to be constructive. Saying something is bland, in my book is good enough. If someone can't work out what you mean they should probably look up the word in a dictionary, or ignore the comment as a difference in opinions.
So in that respect I totally agree with you, why does a negative have to come with instructions?
Although I'm sure Wraiyth would say he isn't jealous, I can see that a little jealousy is fair in this instance. You guys have recieved two awards in the past six months, and have released two sets of media in the past twelve months. Nightfall has recieved no awards, and released more than double the media in the same time, each set of an arguably higher quality.
I had said to Wraiyth that Nightfall was in the shortlist, due for the next round of awards. Then, when the award if given to you, Kester, and the team, one can understand his feelings. I know you didn't ask for it, and I don't think Wraiyth is particularly angry at anyone in particular, least of all you. I assume it just seems a tad unfair to him, which I'm sure both you and I can empathise with.
But, as you say, this was out of all of our hands. Just something that happened. Let's not let anyone lose any respect here over this. As Samuel L. Jackson would say: "We're gonna be like little Fonzies."
As a mod, yes I am annoyed at you recieving an award, and I'm totally aware that its something that out of your hands. Both those facts are well established. I NEVER attacked anyone from the team at all, I simply said that I didn't think the mod was deserving of the award. Whats the point you're trying to raise?
Getting out of hand = all onto Wraiyth, or so it feels like. But a at least one or two comments from people other than the devs have gotten to me and I'm likely to get shitty at someone for whatever reason, and I don't want that to happen. I'm trying to avoid having a go at nated, a conversation similar to the whole 'opinions and justification' went on between me, Fuzzy and Termi, and that didn't come out too well.
Just one thing I would like to raise. You seem to be annoyed at us, as a mod, for receiving an award. Something like that is totally out of our hands. At no point did we ask for the award, or talk someone round into giving it to us.
Also, I don't see how this got, in anyway, out of hand. You voiced opinions, we queried them, you responded, we responded. At no point, in my opinion at least, did it get out of hand enough for either of use to contemplate loosing respect for the other person, or their mod.
On Wraiyth's note, I'm afraid I'm going to have to do the funky politician thing and say: "I won't be taking any questions." I might monitor what happens here, but I won't be justifying my opinion. This wasn't my choice for another award, and if procedure had been followed, it would not have recieved another one. However, it has one, and it has made a great media release, that should be enough for anyone.
In future, there shouldn't be this kind of debate. Cheers.
