Run. Think. Shoot. Live. Source.

Black Mesa is the Half-Life 2 total conversion of the original Half-Life game. Utilizing the Source engine and its endless array of possibilities and powers, Black Mesa will throw you into the world that started the Half-Life continuum and introduced Gordon Freeman to the world as a gun-toting, bullet-dodging Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics.

Black Mesa was built and founded on the principle that Half-Life: Source did not do the original title enough credit, regardless of the true intentions laid out with the release of Half-Life: Source by Valve Software. Subsequently in November 2004, Black Mesa was founded and set out to reconstruct the original title, giving it the new environments, models, and abilities it deserved on the Source engine. This total conversion will not require Half-Life: Source installed on your system to play, only a legitimate and working version of Half-Life 2. At the present time, Valve Software is not associated or involved with the development of this project.

Here is a small list of planned features of Black Mesa:

    * Redesign and overhaul of all 18 chapters, the hazard course and deathmatch levels of the original Half-Life and Half-Life DeathMatch games.
    * Models now take advantage of increased polycount limits and normal mapping technology making deadly opponents and friendly coworkers appear more real.
    * A completely original soundtrack and music library bringing Half-Life's themes and feelings to life in the new sounds engine built into the Source Engine.
    * Artifical Intelligence that will hunt you by sight and sound.
    * Normal, bump and specular maps built into textures giving flat surfaces a new, more dynamic look.
    * Co-operative mode, allowing you and your friends to play through Black Mesa together.
    * The entire cast and characters that the world fell in love with more beauty than ever before, bringing truth to the saying, "if looks could kill..."
    * A multiplayer mode allowing for deathmatch and team deathmatch experience with the complete Half-Life 1/Black Mesa Aresonal at your disposal.
    * A priority on gameplay and immersion factors such as sounds, functionality and interaction.
    * Built by developers who's passion is seen through the quality of their work.

This mod is not dead, we are still hard at work on it.

The wait was just long enough for all kinds of crazy bets to be made, but time to cash those in, because the Black Mesa Trailer is good to go and up for viewing! You can download the high resolution version straight off of Monkey-Junkie's website and or stream it right here on ModDB. We hope this gives you a small taste of what the game will be like, and we hope it was worth the extra wait!

We also forgot to include some great Power Up shots by Kim Dahlgren, so be sure and check those out on our media page! This officially concludes our media release, but not future updates! And as stated in the trailer, the days this mod stays in development are truly numbered. Hang tight, because at long last, it is coming.

Any news? No news. Guess the mod is dead. Sorry people, and this game had such a promising idea. I bet the leak was someone inside the team saying, "Look how much we've not accomplished."

@zitax
I never talked bad about the mod, I was only trying to crack a little joke, and get the commenting started again (which was a succes).
Check my earlier comments and you'll see I love this mod project.

Think about how large this mod is going to be, file size wize, since everything is custome from scratch and done up right?

They recreated a game in another engine when it comes right down to it, and like all new games including Half Life 2 if you didnt fucking notice, ITS FUCKING HUGE AND WONT FIT ON ONE DISC.....

Now, do you want to try and download all that at once from Fileshack? What about Cock Planet?

but i have a very specific request. i know you guys are doing your own music (and i can't wait to hear it) but my absolute favourite song in the original game's soundtrack was electric guitar ambience (aka escape array.) it's that spooky guitar drone stuff that plays by the warehouse that's been rigged to blow. i think it's track 20 on the original disc.

my request is, since you're having to redo the whole soundtrack, would it be possible to do a song similar to the one i've mentioned?

Hey guys. I'm loving how the mod is looking so far, but I just wanted to say, why don't you guys release this mod episodically? You know, like one chapter at a time (Chapters 1 and 2 could be bundled together, just so the player could actually start fighting enemies). I don't know how well that could work but, hey, it's just and idea. : ) Any thoughts or comments?

Winterlord: If it was a joke, then im sorry. But don't come here and talk bad about a mod only because ppl don't comment it all the time.

Oh come ON! A mod has no updates for less than a fucking month and all of the sudden you guys say it's dead? You people need to watch ZP:S. That was inactive for like six months and now it's back on track!

Well said Kalashnikov
I for one appreciate the amount of work these guys have to put in without getting paid, WHILST living a life involving education or work.
Im sure many people would agree with me when I say this mod already looks to be a million times better than Valve's 'excuse' for Half-Life : Source.
Im sure the guys working on it want to do the game the justice it deserves, and as a fan so do I.
So Cut these guys some slack...

...and Arrhythmia - Its not been THAT long since the last media announcement.... especially considering it mainly told us there would be less updates in favour of more work towards the mod itself.

Long Live Black Mesa.
