Run. Think. Shoot. Live. Source.

Black Mesa is the Half-Life 2 total conversion of the original Half-Life game. Utilizing the Source engine and its endless array of possibilities and powers, Black Mesa will throw you into the world that started the Half-Life continuum and introduced Gordon Freeman to the world as a gun-toting, bullet-dodging Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics.

Black Mesa was built and founded on the principle that Half-Life: Source did not do the original title enough credit, regardless of the true intentions laid out with the release of Half-Life: Source by Valve Software. Subsequently in November 2004, Black Mesa was founded and set out to reconstruct the original title, giving it the new environments, models, and abilities it deserved on the Source engine. This total conversion will not require Half-Life: Source installed on your system to play, only a legitimate and working version of Half-Life 2. At the present time, Valve Software is not associated or involved with the development of this project.

Here is a small list of planned features of Black Mesa:

    * Redesign and overhaul of all 18 chapters, the hazard course and deathmatch levels of the original Half-Life and Half-Life DeathMatch games.
    * Models now take advantage of increased polycount limits and normal mapping technology making deadly opponents and friendly coworkers appear more real.
    * A completely original soundtrack and music library bringing Half-Life's themes and feelings to life in the new sounds engine built into the Source Engine.
    * Artifical Intelligence that will hunt you by sight and sound.
    * Normal, bump and specular maps built into textures giving flat surfaces a new, more dynamic look.
    * Co-operative mode, allowing you and your friends to play through Black Mesa together.
    * The entire cast and characters that the world fell in love with more beauty than ever before, bringing truth to the saying, "if looks could kill..."
    * A multiplayer mode allowing for deathmatch and team deathmatch experience with the complete Half-Life 1/Black Mesa Aresonal at your disposal.
    * A priority on gameplay and immersion factors such as sounds, functionality and interaction.
    * Built by developers who's passion is seen through the quality of their work.

This mod is not dead, we are still hard at work on it.

Hello Black Mesa fans!

We come to you once again with an update. It's now the end of 2009, and we know many of you have literally counted the days down until this fateful month. We are floored by the level of support you have given us and are very excited we're so close to reaching our goal.

Unfortunately, to our great disappointment, Black Mesa will not make a 2009 release.

Cynics may now rejoice, bets may be collected, and I think a mod team member has to eat his shoe, but we hope our loyal fans will forgive us and realize that the delay will translate into a better final product that's (hopefully) more easily available to everyone.

Once again we apologize for what has to be very disappointing news. We placed a 2009 deadline on ourselves to motivate us and bring this 6 year project to a close. And while we didn't quite make it, we have come very close and you can expect a complete, polished game to hit your hard drives in the near future. We'll be sure and update if anything changes. Until then, hang tight, it's coming!

Sure, you can postpone the release, but-for the christ sake!!!-update the moddb site! I don't even know if serious progress is being done, no news at all and then short "we postponed". Guys, seriously.

why did this guy get a lot of thumbs down? he might have asked it the wrong way but I'm pretty sure everybody would rather see the actual progress of the mod compared to the monthly updates. I hope it's not asking for much.

i don't really know what's going on and it doesn't make much sense hiding your progress from the public unless something's wrong. these people are your fans and are out here to motivate you.

The serious progress you are looking for is right in front of you. Sure, you may of looked at the images a billion times. However, in my honest opinion, I believe they have exceed every one of my expectations in all levels of the term remake and I will wait for the game despite them not updating their moddb site. I think you also forgetting about their twitter and their actual main site.

Dude, so if they don't make a video or something for you, you'll stop watching them? Did you think that statement through before you typed it? You obviously haven't been a gamer long, have you?

I agree that to stop watching them just because they don't give you any pics is kinda stupid however, their excuse for not releasing any media is just that an excuse. I'm on several mod teams it's not that hard to fraps a short vid or upload a pic. But then again they have been releasing media on their youtube channel so never mind. :)
