Black Mesa: Uplink is the recreation of the Half-Life demo (HL: Uplink) released by Valve in early 1999. The demo featured content that was scrapped from the original storyline. Some might consider it canon with the story, others don't. What matters though, is that many people enjoyed this short episode and that's the reason why I created Uplink for Black Mesa, the long awaited Half-Life remake for the Source Engine.

To play Black Mesa: Uplink, you will need the Source SDK Base 2007 (free) and a copy of the Black Mesa (also free!).

* blows off the dust*. Is this thing still working? Ah, good to see some of you are still here! Welcome back!

On December 17th 2012 Black Mesa Uplink was released. At that point I had worked on it for 3 months straight just to get it done. Which I still consider really fast, seeing this was a one-man effort. My goal was to get the MOD out to the public so a remake of this 1999 demo was finally a reality. I didn't and couldn't go for the AAA+ quality you expect from commercial games. However, most reactions to the mod were pretty good so the quality problems never really bothered me. It saw loads of features and downloads on popular gaming websites.

Recently, the Crowbar Collective released an updated Steam version of Black Mesa, which sparked the public interest in Uplink again. People have asked me for updates, extensions and more in the past and I always felt that I had to get back on the project at some point. Now, 2,5 years later I'm going to just that.

Let me talk you through what you see above. First off, I'm adding more detail to the scenery and extending rooms to make them seem like part of the whole complex. Also, the environments will be more dynamic (moving cargo lift, burning gas leak, rotating emergency light). Most important alteration is the lighting. Getting the lighting right in Source is a tricky job but I'm currently digging further into the specifics and hopefully that will pay off in the end.

What else?

Next to the visual updates and going to fix bugs and some areas will be completely redone. I'm also planning on extending the MOD with extra content.

A question I've received many times is about Steam Workshop. Currently, the Workshop only allows you to upload 100mb at once, which is not enough for BM:Uplink. Next to that, there are some technical difficulties which I still have to sort out. As it seems now, full mods won't be able to release on Workshop easily. If that is fixed later on, I'll surely upload it to the Workshop.

When will this be done?

That's a good question. Back in late 2012 I dedicated a whole lot of my free time to this project but I don't have that luxery anymore, so the development cycle will officially run on Valve Time.

Looking for help!

I'm also looking for other developers who would like to contribute to the project.

i disliked this mod becaus eto much animations were missing(like when you went up the ladder in the sewer you should have seen a zombie eating from a soldiers corpse),no voice overs, hezus didnt gave a damn **** about this mod,he should have asked help, but the maps where good remade, the ending was good, but its far from completion,if the bm devs would play this they would say the same, why the hell did you think they made theirs in 8 years? because it had to be perfect without bugs, and if they would making this mod tehy would have made it in a year, and im not saying that i could do it better, but its verry good the donations goes to the red cross

So it's very good, but I didn't give a damn **** about it? That sounds a bit like a contradiction.

I'm aware this is not a full-blown MOD. And yes, I could have found/paid people to make new animations and sounds and other blingbling. Contrary to popular belief, modders are not magical beings with unlimited time and funds to make stuff especially for you for free. We do this because sometimes we have some spare time between our day jobs and social lives to mess around in Source SDK. That's why BM took 8 years to be released and it's not done yet. I was not going to make the same mistake, so I planned my free time in the last months to actually be able to ship Uplink this year.

As I said before: in a remake you can't please everyone. People will always complain. From the comments I can tell most people are happy with it and so am I. Be happy there are people out there who even bother making stuff for free.

im srry if i was hard but if its about a remake of one of the half lifes then im looking at every detail, and im aware that you modders do not almost have time but let me say his, take the freetime you have in your mod dont get pushed by other people and ask for help, and then if you see that it almost is bugfree and if you think that you putted all stuf(including the animations) in it, then release it,and i didnt say that it was a complete bad mod i was just dissapaointed that there where allot of stuff missing, the maps and the ending was great.ps:for my part it may be took a year of three that you worked on this mod.

Quit complaining and try to make something like this yourself, you'll be surprised how much work all this really is.

As one of my friends said :

"It's not a mod, just a pack of maps !"

So don't be so surprised and disappointed !

I'm confused. I just downloaded and been playing Black Mesa... you know... the remake of the original Half Life? So what does this have to do with that? Does it have anything to do with that? Is this an expansion or improvement of the recently released Black Mesa???

The original "Uplink" was a demo for playable demo for Half Life, made from content that Valve cut from HL, so it fit's into the story. So, this "Uplink" is a remake of that one, as Black Mesa is a 'remake' of Half Life.

There's a three part mod, Timeline, that would be REALLY impressive if remade in Source. But I'm afraid that it would be too difficult because it uses an important amount of new textures, scripted sequences and set pieces (eg. a lightweight plane and a rocket). Also, to make it look nice and polished, it would be necessary to create new props and models.
