Black Mesa: Uplink is the recreation of the Half-Life demo (HL: Uplink) released by Valve in early 1999. The demo featured content that was scrapped from the original storyline. Some might consider it canon with the story, others don't. What matters though, is that many people enjoyed this short episode and that's the reason why I created Uplink for Black Mesa, the long awaited Half-Life remake for the Source Engine.

To play Black Mesa: Uplink, you will need the Source SDK Base 2007 (free) and a copy of the Black Mesa (also free!).

* blows off the dust*. Is this thing still working? Ah, good to see some of you are still here! Welcome back!

On December 17th 2012 Black Mesa Uplink was released. At that point I had worked on it for 3 months straight just to get it done. Which I still consider really fast, seeing this was a one-man effort. My goal was to get the MOD out to the public so a remake of this 1999 demo was finally a reality. I didn't and couldn't go for the AAA+ quality you expect from commercial games. However, most reactions to the mod were pretty good so the quality problems never really bothered me. It saw loads of features and downloads on popular gaming websites.

Recently, the Crowbar Collective released an updated Steam version of Black Mesa, which sparked the public interest in Uplink again. People have asked me for updates, extensions and more in the past and I always felt that I had to get back on the project at some point. Now, 2,5 years later I'm going to just that.

Let me talk you through what you see above. First off, I'm adding more detail to the scenery and extending rooms to make them seem like part of the whole complex. Also, the environments will be more dynamic (moving cargo lift, burning gas leak, rotating emergency light). Most important alteration is the lighting. Getting the lighting right in Source is a tricky job but I'm currently digging further into the specifics and hopefully that will pay off in the end.

What else?

Next to the visual updates and going to fix bugs and some areas will be completely redone. I'm also planning on extending the MOD with extra content.

A question I've received many times is about Steam Workshop. Currently, the Workshop only allows you to upload 100mb at once, which is not enough for BM:Uplink. Next to that, there are some technical difficulties which I still have to sort out. As it seems now, full mods won't be able to release on Workshop easily. If that is fixed later on, I'll surely upload it to the Workshop.

When will this be done?

That's a good question. Back in late 2012 I dedicated a whole lot of my free time to this project but I don't have that luxery anymore, so the development cycle will officially run on Valve Time.

Looking for help!

I'm also looking for other developers who would like to contribute to the project.

Hmmm, this conflicts with Surface Tension Uncut, and seems that will conflict with On a Rail Uncut (in the future) too, in the future. The reason for the conflict with the soundcache. Any ideas or maybe plans to mix with the maps in the future?

I already pointed this out on the BM forums, but the problem is that these MODs use common BM files (that will overwrite each other). I've added a tool to revert to the original files, so people can install other MODs. That's the best I can do. The only real way to fix this is to make MOD's stand-alone. However, ethically, I feel I shouldn't publish files that aren't mine.

If you have any clever idea's on how to fix this in another fashion, I'm all ears. However, my current life doesn't really leave much room for game development and I hear the Source SDK is a mess since the 2013 update, so do not expect any updates anytime soon.

Is it possible to program some kind of "compatibility patch" so that people can use these mods together? I'm sure if you contact the creator of the Uncut project they'd happily assist you or even do it for you if you don't have the time yourself. :)

EDIT: I don't know, give them permission to redistribute your mod as part of some kind of "Black Mesa: Deleted Scenes" mod or something? These mods are just too good not to go together.

I hate randomly asking for help in comment sections. But this really needs to be addressed. I am unable to find detailed instructions on how to install and how to play uplink. I really feel like the way you play this is a$$backwards, since it is not just listed in my steam games library. I'm not trying to sound like a douche or and a$$hole but help me on this someone.

It's mentioned in the download desciption and the readme, but I'll just give you the answer here for future reference.

To play Uplink you need a working copy of Black Mesa (and Source SDK Base 2007). The installer will place Uplink into the Black Mesa folder, or you can do so manually by downloading the ZIP version. Now load up Black Mesa in Steam and click New Game. You'll notice there is a new chapter (1st) called "Uplink". Click that and launch!

Hope that helps you!

Very cool mod. Loved the easter egg near the end with the purple top hat. Thought for awhile I was going to find a "call Apogee and say Ardvark" sign...
