Hi there, and welcome to my project to "uncut" Black Mesa! Black Mesa was a crowning achievement for modding for sure, but it felt like it was lacking a little in some areas, particularly Surface Tension. For those of you that were not aware, Black Mesa's version of Surface Tension cut out a map from the original which was integral to the story's progression. Its replacement felt rushed and poorly implemented. My mod attempts to add that little something back into the game. I took the liberty of re-adding the cut chapters from Surface Tension as I feel their omission strongly harmed the story and really damaged the tone of Forget About Freeman. I've given them the same treatment Black Mesa gave everything else. This mod currently adds 40 - 50 minutes of gameplay and story to Surface Tension, improving the Black Mesa experience and it's overall narrative. It integrates seamlessly with the Black Mesa campaign too, just like it should. Why not give it a whirl?
When I was playing Black Mesa the first time, I quickly remember as an old fan of Half-Life how some sections of Surface Tension were missing. Well, fear not, Pilgrims, for Surface Tension Uncut aims to fix that little mistake! This mod will bring you back the final moments of the HECU's intervention in Black Mesa, right when the aliens start to take a toll on the Marines. Whole Marine groups shall be crushed by the Aliens, M1 Abrams's will be destroyed by the Alien Ray creatures, and lots of more incredible things to be seen in this mod! It Really shows how the HECU was fighting a losing battle by the later part of the game. Congratulations on the developer of the mod. Because this mod is a "MUST GET IT" option.
This mod was actually a rather fun (and necessary) addition to Black Mesa. The garage level where you get shot out of the ducts was actually one of the few memorable moments in Half Life that I could immediately recall to, and having it back just makes it all the more important.
Few points of criticism are these:
Overuse of particles caused some severe frame rate drops in a few places
The TOW battle section often devolved into fighting on foot, using that damn turret is just too slow, and the fact that foot soldiers spawn all around you just makes the TOW even more impracticable.
But overall it felt like a integral part to BMS, I could barely tell the difference. Good Work.
8.7/10, but since this review works with whole numbers, I'll round it up.
Just excellent! Adds back to Black Mesa with some all new twists, so it is familiar but not simply repetitious of the original HL1. Adds in seamlessly to Black Mesa,as promised, although for some reason I had to use the zip file and extract directly, as the installer program somehow missed the directory.
The only complaint I might have at all is the same complaint I might level at the original; that the two battle sequences between alien goons and HECU are fun to watch, but not really something you play yourself, at least until one the action calms down and they come looking for you. Or maybe that's just how I handle it.
The only thing I would like to see more of -- and I know this is largely beyond your control, as it is the nature of the game, is less linearity. I think you mention that yourself, and trying to at least give the feel of more open-endedness. B ut I'm sure a big part of that too is that so many of us have played this through SO many times now that we know pretty much exactly what we have to do, and that naturally contributes to the linear feel. I hope you can do some pure mods that go more that way!
Excellent work, and congrats on getting pulled for the Black Mesa team!
The mod is very pretty, and an extremely nice take on the original game's chapter. The downfall of this mod is that it's not very fun to play. Definitely deserves a play to look at, but it becomes a pretty blatant low point if played in a normal Black Mesa playthrough.
"Black Mesa" is an amazing redo of the classic Half-Life game. But, it was missing a large element of the gameplay towards the end and this mod puts it all back in place perfectly. The creator did a superb job of making the areas look seamless to that of BM's appearance, so much so that it flows smoothly from the original to this mod and out of it without a problem. If you are going to play "Black Mesa", I highly recommend installing this mod in the process so that you have a complete game.
Does exactly what it should. It adds the missing chapters of Surface Tension that Black mesa forgot in a way consistent to the rest of Black Mesa itself while still expanding, improving memorable moments, and adding extra secrets and ways to play. Not to mention, the mod incorporates the cut On a Rail soundtrack in an awesome Liens vs HECU battle scene. That alone means a 10/10. Overall, this is the best way to watch the HECU marines get destroyed by Xenians in the safe haven of memorable environments.
