Battle Mech is a great little mod for Quake 1. Don't let the engine choice make you think otherwise though, as Battle Mech is just brilliant.

Battle Mech focus's on playing as a mech in a normal deathmatch arena. The style of the mod is very arcadish, with its over head view,
and vast amount of weapons, each with different uses. To make it better, its stand-alone, so even people without Quake can enjoy it!

The GraphicsBeing the Quake engine, your farily limited when it comes to graphics. However, by using a different Quake engine, Battle Mech is able to
provide a standard view of graphics which will keep you statisfied while playing. Not much detail was needed into these things though, as
with the overhead view, you can't see much of the weapons, or other things. Since you can't use Quake graphics with a stand-alone mod,
textures where produced to use in maps, there is absoluty nothing wrong with them, and they fit into the maps perfectly. The maps them
selfs are small, an undetailed, but none of this is noticed at a quick glance, because your not right up close to the battlefield anyway. The
mech's themselfs are nicely done. But, the skin when a mech has blown up really needs some work done to it.

The Sound FXYet again, since its the Quake engine, sounds aren't in the toppest quality of the lot, but up a bit thanks to the different Quake engine
again. The sounds are good, and each weapon has its onw unique sound, different from the rest. The sound of a meech crashing over is
kind of weird, as it sort of sounds like a horse neighing. Wether or not this was actually how the sound was made is something I don't
really know.

The GameplayThis is where Battle Mech is ace. Fast frantic gameplay in the small tight maps is incredibly fun. The huge assortment of weapons makes
you different from all the players most of the time, except when you run out of ammo and are forced back the the default weapon. I
personally like the grenade launcher best, as it just feels really good when playing with it. Battle Mech comes with bots to compensate for
when you are unable to play humans. These bots are a blast to play with, and they know how to use the weapons and get around the maps
extremely well. Deathmatch is not the only game play style featured in Battle Mech either, there's a couple of varients of Capture the Flag
and some other team play. However, there was no maps in the download for these other gametypes so I couldn't try these styles out. The
controls have a sort of high learning curve for people, but once learned the technique behind them, you should be blasting enemy mechs
like your king of the world.

Final WordBattle Mech is an enjoyable deathmatch/team play mod for the Quake engine. The gameplay does have a steep, but short, learning curve,
but this is easily gotten over. If your looking for some different deathmatch fun, give Battle Mech a try.
