The Battle Grounds 2(BG2) is a Half-Life 2 multiplayer modification based on the revolutionary war. It is the sequel to the popular HL1 mod with even more features and possibilities. The British Army and its Native American tribal allies engage in battle against the United States Continental Army and local militia forces. Interactivity is a very important factor in this mod and team play is as important as ever before. Take aim and fire muskets, prepare bayonets and take control of the battlefield to succeed in your campaign for final victory. Combat will vary from long-range rifle marksmanship to brutal close quarters hand-to-hand melee fighting. You will need a mix of first person combat skills and quick-thinking strategy to survive. So prepare yourself to do battle for your side and to meet the enemy head-on. Only one side can be victorious.

This Sunday is the tenth anniversary of The Battle Grounds II. To mark this special occasion I thought I would show some of the recent developments and work from the Dev team.

Every single official map has been updated in some way, with new shadows, lighting and models. Some of these changes have resulted in old maps looking dramatically different, like Plateau:

Some of the maps, like Bg_Fall, have had small changes made to enhance the gameplay and improve the graphics.

Additionally we have a completely new map for this release, CTF_Road.

You can see more screenshots of CTF_Road and read more about it over at our website, Bg2mod.com That website will play a greater role in the new release, since we plan to add a webpage with descriptions and stories for each map drawn from real, historical places to lend a more historical and dynamic flavour to each map, rather than just having generic names.

We have recently added in new models as well, there is of course the Swivel Gun:

A nasty piece of work loaded with grapeshot that sweeps enemies away.

It wouldn't be Battle Grounds if you couldn't slice your foes up, so I'm pleased to show off some of our new edged weaponry, starting with the new British officer Sword (WIP).

And finally the Native has a new tomahawk to hack away with:

Ten years is a long time for any game to go on for, let alone a free mod based on Valve's Source engine. The community has had it's ups and downs but it's kept going, and the community keeps it alive, it's been great to spend so many years with the Bg2 community. So here's to all you Battle Grounds II players, may your shots fly true and may you always get headstabs!

No, we currently have no plans for anti-personel cannons. We have tried them in the HL1 version and some custom maps have made ones too, in all cases we found that the cannon would always cause someone on your team to sit there and shoot it at everything, killing his whole team on the way xD

In regards to the sword slashing 'later', the weapons hit instantly, we tried adding a delay to go with the animation, but it made the game much more difficult, we removed that and went back to instant hit. The difference is the reach of the weapon(they have a certain range, minuteman and loyalist having the worst, infantry having the best) the damage, and to a lesser extent, the speed.

great mod, it was one of the most popular games at a LAN I helped organise, once you get used to it, the slow reload times are fun and it give s more strategy than all the ohter FPSs out there, but I have some suggestions to improve:

- The completely outdoor levels are great, but township I think it is, lack detail on the buildings in my opinion.

- The some of the foliage is to bright (orange elaved trees and some bushes)

- more weapon variety, I don't know how many weapons there were back then, but having 3 weaon choices and 2 of them look the same is kinda weird, maybe changing the weapons between the different classes wiht only small btu noticable changes would help

- the sword really sucks compared to the bayonet(it slashes way after clicking), where you'd think it would be better

other than those great mod :D

Are there any plans for cannon emplacements or even mobile cannons? I think the game would be alot less "running n' gunning" that way and people would have to be careful where they exposed themselves or else they could get a little gift from above. Also cavalry would be interesting to see, i imagine that would take alot of programming though so i wont be expecting to see that too soon. :D

the game is realalistic, and loyal to the truth
however there is two problems:
1. bots tend to walk into impaasable terrain and shoot at the walls
2.no ones ever on the servers ang i cant get on them because "it uses different models

download the svn repository of the mod, it's completely up to date, and as far as I can tell, completely compatable. If not, send me a PM and I'll upload the client and server .dll files, you can use them, that will fix it.

If you want anal use of period tactics, there is a BF2 mod under developement. Last time I checked the models looked crap(though it was running on BFV) but they had a few things that our mod doesn't, namely, a 'vehicle' for a line formation.

It's sad our source port isn't far enough in developement for some scrims, because that's where the game really shines.

If you guys have more feedback, post about it in the forums, make sure your topic isn't covered already though, beleive me, we have nearly heard them all ;)

If that comes off wrong, the weapons were highly inaccurate they were muskets, but Rev war was fought in line behind line marching firing squads., unfortunately a historically accurate game would have been boring.Well thats how the british fought the americans used Guerilla tactics, to an extent.
