The Battle Grounds 2(BG2) is a Half-Life 2 multiplayer modification based on the revolutionary war. It is the sequel to the popular HL1 mod with even more features and possibilities. The British Army and its Native American tribal allies engage in battle against the United States Continental Army and local militia forces. Interactivity is a very important factor in this mod and team play is as important as ever before. Take aim and fire muskets, prepare bayonets and take control of the battlefield to succeed in your campaign for final victory. Combat will vary from long-range rifle marksmanship to brutal close quarters hand-to-hand melee fighting. You will need a mix of first person combat skills and quick-thinking strategy to survive. So prepare yourself to do battle for your side and to meet the enemy head-on. Only one side can be victorious.

It's been another great year since the release of the 2.2 version of Battle Grounds 2, and the Development team has been working on a a lot of new content throughout the past year. We will soon be releasing the first part of this new content as Battle Grounds 2.3, with the most significant change being that we have ported the game from the old 2007 SDK version of source to the newest version of Valve's 2013 SDK. While the 2013 sdk does offer some graphical updates and advantages, the main benefit is that it is fully supported by Valve and will hopefully be free from the many errors and bugs that continue to plague Source SDK 2007.

With the game ported over we have been focusing on utilizing the improved SDK to update every official map with better textures, models, effects and lighting, bringing a fresh new look to the classic BG2 maps. Our mapper, Awesome has created a video showcasing the changes made to the maps, Enjoy!

(Please note that this video shows content which is still a work in progress, you can expect many more changes and improvements to come.)

With at least two new updates in the development pipe line, we thought it was a good idea to update our website and shift to a new forum, so over the past few weeks we have been working on moving over to the new home of the Battle Grounds II mod. Our new website is at so be sure to update your bookmarks! The forums and site are still being tweaked, so expect some small changes as we head on into the new year.

To help keep the community better informed of our progress, For the 2.3 update we decided to integrate a news feed from the new website directly into the main menu of the mod. Not only will this help keep everyone updated on our progress, but it can also be used to help organize and maintain community events, like our "Battle for The Colonies" event.

Continuing on with the menu changes, we have created a new loading screen with helpful hints and tips about the game.

And it wouldn't be Christmas without new clothes. This time it's the brave officers that have new clothes with two new uniform options for the British and American forces.

Finally we have a new game element that will be added to a select few maps. The Swivel Gun.

Packed with small iron balls, nails and bits of and pieces of this and that, this little gun packed a nasty punch and was certain to ruin someone's day. Deployed at key choke points players will be able to control this swivel and make it a difficult day for their opponents.

I am also pleased to announce that public testing will open soon, and any player that wishes may sign up on the forum for SVN access to the latest build of BG2. We are working on ironing out the final bugs in the port and continuing to add new content, so keep your eyes open on the new website for the announcement of open testing!

Wishing you all the best this holiday season,

Hawke and the Battle Grounds 2 Development Team

the game is realalistic, and loyal to the truth
however there is two problems:
1. bots tend to walk into impaasable terrain and shoot at the walls ones ever on the servers ang i cant get on them because "it uses different models
can anyone give me a hand on these?

oh, and in regards to installing without the NSIS installer

download the svn repository of the mod, it's completely up to date, and as far as I can tell, completely compatable. If not, send me a PM and I'll upload the client and server .dll files, you can use them, that will fix it.

I'm glad you thought it through :)

If you want anal use of period tactics, there is a BF2 mod under developement. Last time I checked the models looked crap(though it was running on BFV) but they had a few things that our mod doesn't, namely, a 'vehicle' for a line formation.

It's sad our source port isn't far enough in developement for some scrims, because that's where the game really shines.

If you guys have more feedback, post about it in the forums, make sure your topic isn't covered already though, beleive me, we have nearly heard them all ;)

If that comes off wrong, the weapons were highly inaccurate they were muskets, but Rev war was fought in line behind line marching firing squads., unfortunately a historically accurate game would have been boring.Well thats how the british fought the americans used Guerilla tactics, to an extent.

running around with highly inaccurate weaponry is just straight up ****** up, not how Revolutionary War was fought, I commend the effort, but dislike the mod.

Nah sorry for the bad impression guys, source is a great engine, don't get me wrong, I really did enjoy playing half life 2, but I don't like's annoying...perhaps I should ignore it *embarrassed*

I do like the looks of this mod, and I'm glad that progress is being would help if the install actually worked on my computer though...I get some install error with it. The error is an NSIS's really annoying, because I like the revolutionary war, and this mod looks sweet to play...

BTW, are there huge big battlefields to fight in? like open landscapes or castle sieges of any of that?

Perhaps a fight across a small river bed or something with rocks and stuff littering either side for would be awsome!

Keep it up guys, you are doing well, I look forward to getting this mod install working so that I can play! :D

Once again, I greatly apologize for my behaviour...totally uncalled for.

All you guys that have played, and then complained... They are still in the Beta stage, I've seen some recent models, they have facial expressions, real HL2 faces, eyes that follow. Simbull (Simulated Bullets).

Simbull is even in the current Beta, dont you see? Better and better...
