Barney's Tales is a total conversion of the original Half-Life Blue Shift add-on. Source Engine, used in mod, will allow us to visit the world of the scary Black Mesa Research Facility once more. Security officer Barney Calhoun, undecided major, was going on his first shift in a research facility. He put on his uniform, got his Glock-18 in the armory and set out for the Sector 3. Suddenly, Barney felt an explosion and the lift he was going by fell down. Next thing he saw when consciousness returned was a strange alien creature tearing a scientist. With the personnel and security officers at his side Barney must escape the Black Mesa before it becomes a blazing crater...

Hi there! So, the latest news post is dated the 24th July, and I guess, you wanna know what happened to that mod with such a strange title :). You know, there was even one post asking crazily “Mod dead? Please, NOOO!” So, folks, I can assure all of you, that the project is alive and it truly, but very, very slowly comes to the end. Heh, what I’m talking about, I didn’t do anything during this half a year!
First of all, the team had some staff rearrangement. Xelious, our mapper, has recently leaved us, but 4 tough guys came. Meet up Ultemate and bredlyy, two perfect weapon and character artists, Ha1fer (you may know him by his self-created mod, Penetration) and Shad3r, texture and sound effects creator
Second. Barney’s Tales was added to the MODdb top 100 sites list. I’m glad that mod always stays in the top 10 – top 20 numbers, but it would be better if it stays in the top 5, huh? :) Anyway, it’s up to you to decide.
The third thing to discuss is MOTY 2006, of course. Yes, the mod is too young, but I have some trumps to make you click that treasured “vote” button above the brief description of BT. Let’s see what for I was typing all this:
Here we got Colt M4 assault rifle with grenade launcher, fully automatic machine pistol Glock 18, Gas-masked Human Grunt render and three in-game screenshots from maps the ba_tram and ba_canals. And that’s just the beginning. We got a pleasant surprise for you in the image gallery ;) See for yourself.
That’s all for now. Waiting for both your enthusiastic screams and constructive critics.

Sweet! Looking good fellows!
amazing work particularly on the texture side of things
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the tram pic... Black Mesa Source anyone?
:|
What do you mean by that?
I think he is remembering it, and wishing he had it. :p
Looks awesome :D
This mod has very nice models. I never beat Blue Shift I found it too boring.
I believe this is what Rapishorrid is talking about.

This is my personal opinion, but you know, most of underground bunkers have splay corners to protect from nuclear explosion or something like that, and most of bunkers have bearings to strengthen ceiling. Also its logically that need two monorail for safe transportation.
I'd like to ignore your posts and dont answer (because this unsubstantiated accusation, and in my opinion it is foolish to explain evident), but u just keep posting and posting... stop that, we understand your opinion.
Don't tell me ur gonna start accusing them now! Get a life!
You are only backing them up because you're guilty of the same thing.
i don't think they just copied... there are mayor differences, only the lightning reminds me of black mesa ...
don't get me wrong, i'm totally a bm supporter, but on the source engine (unless you use only costum-content) some things look similar!
btw. welcome to my watch-list, barneys tales xD
I'm not going to make any accusations here because I personally don't really care. If the mod is good I'll play it and not worry about it, if it sucks I won't play it and won't worry about it.
I'm just wondering how you go from that HL1 shot in the upper right hand corner to the Source shot, where it bears literally no resemblance, yet has countless similarities to the well known BM:S Inbound screenshots.
I posted twice, once to bring up my point and a second time to explain it because some people didn't understand the first post.
I was just wondering how they got that from the HL1 screenshot. They obviously bear absolutely no resemblance to eachother. The HL1 shot is 90% rocks, and I don't see a single red rock in that shot, something that was characteristic of HL1. And I've already made my point about the resemblance the source shot shares with BM:S. And Ultemate there's no two ways about it, the shot took HEAVY inspiration from BM:S. You obviously can't go from that HL1 shot to the screen posted without influence from something else, in this case BM:S.
Either way, that's a nice grunt model. :)
So what? Are you saying BM:S invented that type of tunnel? BM:S based it's design on other things: movies, games, whatever, and are those developers crying? I don't think so, so you should stop doing that too, IMO.
Looks f**cking awesome the complainers can shutup, the mod rocks thats all that matters
Stickmaster: I havn't got any accusions. Im a conceptartist on OpBM. The accusions considered mapshots... U should really look twice before making a fool out of yourself, stupid BM fanboy.
TiB0, give me a break man that tunnel looks almost exactly like the BM:S tunnel. When I saw the thumbnail on the front page I thought it was the long awaited BM:S update.
"Are those developers crying?"
They sure are. When something is almost a direct copy of their work, as this is, they get on their case. There are countless examples, a recent one being Halogen. BM:S is based on something, and if you haven't already figured it out - it's Half Life. And if my memory serves... BS is based on the same exact thing. And no that doesn't give it justification to look like BM:S - or at least that screenshot - the only justification it has allows it to look like Half Life. And unless I'm blind those two screenshots literally 100% different.
Hey ZitaX. Why don't you learn some proper grammar and spelling before trying to throw another silly insult at me. If you truly believe that this mod has taken no influence from Black Mesa Source, you are naive. I think that the only reason you are siding with this mod is because they are guilty of the exact same thing that your team is guilty of, which is blatantly stealing designs. Arguing that "it is the same facility" does not justify the ripping off well thought out work.
TiB0: What movies and games, pray tell, does Black Mesa Source get it's designs from? Please enlighten me, as I have never seen anything like that outside of the internet. If it's true that Black Mesa Source's architectural styling is taken from a movie, then wouldn't that mean that this mod has copied that movie as well? That sounds pretty damn stupid to me, for two mods based off of a fictional research facility to be modeled after a movie. Wouldn't that completely defeat the purpose of being Black Mesa, and having it's own original look and feel that is designed specifically how you envisioned it?
Stickmaster: Well, looks like the BMS devs doesn't need to come here, you BMS fanboys can acuse other mods just as good as they can! The reason im defending them, is because their maps looks pretty dang good, and i don't want them to change it because of no-lifes like you.
Btw, we are free of acusions, we have discussed with the BMS team, and they rested their case after we showed them some vmf files.
one of the best m4 models i´ve seen!.. great work!
those two tunnels are totally different, and plus they are both copied from the original half life and hl blue shift so of course they're gunna be similar...can't a week go by without someone accusing someone else of stealing something, i mean are u accusing them of stealing a screenie or an entire level coz even if they stole the level what would be the point? it wouldn't fit in the with of the game and what would be the point stealing a screenie wen they clearly have a million other peices of custom content to show off.
I'm not sure how you come to the conclusion that we are "no-lifes", but I am sure you have your reasons...
I am by no means a BM:S fanboy, in fact I don't even own Half Life 2 so I am not particularly interested in Half Life 2 mods. However I enjoy looking at the the artwork posted for mods as I am a 3d/2d artist myself. When I see something like this I can't help but wonder and ask. I don't want to argue any more because obviously, ZitaX, you cannot even keep a straight case and instead have to resort to lame accusations like "no life" and "fanboy". I am making perfectly valid points that are backed up by evidence, I haven't called any names, or criticized anyone. I've just asked a simple question about how you can go from that HL1 screenshot to the Source screenshot, because they have absolutely no similarities.
Case closed, and cheers to both mods. Again that grunt model is niiice. :)
Rapishorrid: I was more refering to Stickmaster, who seemed to attack me in personal. Sorry if you got offended as well, but my opinion is still that there are a lot of BMS fanboys who must attack everything that look even slightly similar to the BMS maps (wich now, must be outdated).
Ah ok ZitaX, sorry then. And yes I agree about the BMS fanboys. Either way props to both mods for the hard work and effort regardless of everyones opinion. :)
As I was the one who had these discussions about ripped work with Gunner, I find it strange how you came to the conclusion that we have no quarms with your work anymore. Infact I raised countless issues with Gunner on parts that I found similar in the vmf's and one part that was infact identical, even down to a inverted texture axis on one of the textures (the scale was also identical, set at 0.69, not a regular scaling I'm sure you'd agree). Mine was inverted on the y axis because I needed it to line up correctly around a bend. In the vmf I saw there was no reason for this texture to be inverted, and if Gunner had done this, it would have been for a reason (it's not something that happens by accident, you have to manually change this value). When I quizzed Gunner on this, he went silent for 5 minutes and then came back with a response similar to "I must have done it by accident". That to me sounds like a poor excuse for being caught red handed. In my opinion Gunner has copied our work, in some cases directly and others indirectly, however almost all of the design choices I saw in this vmf seem based on work the BM team had done (being the lead level designer I know our work inside out, and therefore can spot these things where I fan may not).
We haven't rested our case. we have infact decided to ignore your progress as it is counter productive to pursue such avenues.
Ok guys, you can continue your discussions in operation bm//black mesa or etc forums. Not here. How i remember here we discuss Barneys tales media update. Thanks.
I totally agree, I didn't really want to post it here, but this is where the discussion was happening.
However, the fact still stands that it is remarkably similar to our version of inbound, which ever way you look at it. That's all I'm going to say on it.
Wicked media. Keep it up. :D
