Bailter Ray is a single player total conversion mod using Unreal Tournament 3  as a development platform. Made over 12 weeks this is the work of four people Pip Robbins, Paul Smith, Zhao Zhang and Rebecca Wong final year students in RMIT's Game Program.

Bailter Ray is a 2.5D "side scrolling" platform, adventure shooter. Set in a alternate reality where science fiction tin toys exist as living entities. The player controls a tin spaceman Captain Phoenix Valentine, an Astro-Explorer who has crashed landed onto an unknown alien planet. In order to get home the captain needs to retrieve his space ship's power supply (a wind up key) and locate his ship.

The game is a platforming playground of puzzles, enemy robots and alien plants that shoot goo and fire. In order to survive the surreal alien landscape, the player must make effective use of his suit's jumping and dodging abilities.

Demo Background

Originally Bailter Ray was made with a target audience of children (4 +) in mind, we felt there was a need for child/family friendly UT3 Mods.

We wanted to focus on simplifying game design by scaling the scope of the project to enable a small team to iterate quickly within a short time frame. We spent a few weeks building a simple demo/sandbox to try out some of our ideas, for example the dodging in and out of the 2d gameplay plane. We then experimented with different level design configurations and added a simple UI.
Though we liked what we had, we decided to spend another 12 weeks redesigning the art assets (an excuse to refine modeling/texturing skills), we added power ups, collectable items and a gameplay introduction tutorial.

What we end up with was a kind of portfolio piece 15- 20 minutes of demo gameplay with a fun prototype level as a bonus reward.

Demo Summary

Bailter Ray is a retro style (side scrolling) sci-fi platform shooter. Inspired by games such as Turrican, Megamen and Abuse.

Take control of marooned Astro-Explorer, Captain Phoenix Valentine as you’re compelled to explore, jump and ray-gun to survive the dangerous attacks of an alien planet’s inhabitants.
In order to get home, Phoenix needs to retrieve his space ship’s power supply (a wind up key), and locate his rocket ship.

The player navigates and explores various areas of the level and is rewarded with points by eliminating enemies and finding collectable alien planet “samples”.

Points are deducted for losing lives so a negative score is possible. In the process of exploring, the player discoverers new enemies and learns new skills to progress though the game.

i have a problem. it lags A LOT. For some reason, every 2 to 3 or 4 seconds i get a drop in fps, then back to 60. It's extremely annoying when im trying to jump to another platform and it lags. I played the last release with no problems at all. I was wondering if it's me or the game. Anyways thanks for the great mod, you did a good job.

Hi johnpinky7,
This version certainly has more meshes and textures on screen...our team developed this mod on average specification laptops, and have had no lag problems...you could try lowing resolution and turn off dynamic shadows and motion blur etc.
Thanks for the feedback though (we 'll try test it out on a few different systems). Hope you get it running smooth enough to play.

I'm sorry but its not a low framerate, but a lot of skipping and chopping. I get the same results on low quality. No matter what, ever 2 to 3 seconds I get some choppiness. I'm very confused and I would really like to play this very well done mod =)

Strange. I think it's likely to be a issue with your computer.

Here are some general tips I can recommend:

1) Updated your video card to the latest driver.
2) Make sure you disable any programs which are not required.
3) De-fragment your hard drive.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Thanks for trying to help, but the problem persists. I got the 2.1 version installed and the choppiness went down, but it's not completely gone. I'm almost positive it's not my computer, since I can run all next gen games including crysis and the highest settings in 1600x900 res on an hd monitor with my fps never below 50. Even unreal 3 itself. It is playable and I will just have to deal with it, but thanks for the interesting and awesome mod! It brings back memory from when I used to play a lot of adventure sidescroller games =)

We have been looking to release a UDK version of Bailter Ray. Spent a bit of time yesterday on it, in fact. There have been a few complications so it may take some time.
