Sorry, you're going to have to repeat that. "Re-live one of the best movies of all time," you say, "in the outstanding game play of the sandbox hit, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City"? Are you mad? The last time we checked, the heaviest weapon Marty McFly ever held was a hair dryer. And that bit when he stunned the crowd at the Enchantment Under The Sea Dance, strolled outside and kicked a prostitute to death... Our memories must be failing us.

Mods like nothing more than to lump the outrageous with the preposterous, but even by that standard Hill Valley is insane. A Total Conversion project spanning the entire Back to the Future trilogy, its feature list promises five different eras to explore at your leisure, turning a game of casual murder into one of temporal hopscotch. And casual murder.

Hill Valley is the venue, of course, and you'll need a nuclear powered, white elephant sports car - a DeLorean, complete with functioning gullwing doors and authentic sounds - to nip back and forth along its timeline. This mod gives you three: the common-or-garden lightning-rod assisted 1985 model, a 2015 hovercar with retractable wheels, and an 1885 version with, well, a funny bonnet. While the setting of the current beta is still limited to the rainbow-coloured Vice City, it's hard to care about that or any other incongruity when, come the magic 88mph, you jump through time, potentially in mid-air.

Yes, Hill Valley is more than just a bumper pack of existing vehicle swaps and handling tweaks - despite being improbably gatecrashed by KITT from Knight Rider. Given enough plutonium (for the nuclear core) or rubbish (for Mr Fusion), you really can punch-in the time and date, floor the accelerator, wait for the fire trails and let the good times roll.

Screeching through alleyways and around close corners, cops breathing down your neck as you bob desperately around the 50mph mark, flux capacitor set for a spectacular escape, is great stuff. In a mod that's still an age away from completion, the first essential piece has fallen in place. Expect, over the coming months, hitched skateboard rides on the backs of passing cars, remote controlled time travel tests and, if the mod's five-strong team see things through, vehicles and pedestrians unique to their respective eras. It's a massive undertaking, but one literally off to a flying start.
