The goals of Arx Libertatis are to

  • Update the Arx Fatalis source code to support modern systems
  • Improve portability of the game
  • Provide ports and on-going support in source for modern systems
  • Eliminate bugs or limitations of the original
  • Improve basic functionality to bring the engine on-par with similar modern games
  • Provide for further improvements and customizations to be made to the game by the community

For a complete list of features, see the changelog

As of version 1.0, Arx Libertatis allows you to play Arx Fatalis under Windows, Linux and FreeBSD - provided you own a copy of the original Arx Fatalis. The source can also be compiled for Mac OS X, but only unofficial Mac binaries are available.

0 comments by dscharrer on Oct 18th, 2013

This is another small hotfix, this time to fix a crash when hovering over map markers after the window size or resolution has changed. See the full changelog for more details to read this same change summary again. We encourage all users of Arx Libertatis 1.1.1 to upgrade to 1.1.2 whenever they feel like it.

Updated Windows, Linux and FreeBSD binaries and packages are available.

Yup, this release is really only one small fix. We have been working on bigger changes, and are getting closer to having fully hardware-accelerated rendering and per-pixel lighting, but did not want to delay this fix until those changes are ready for release.

Can I carry my saves over from 1.0.3 to 1.1 or do I have to start the game again? I'm using 'Arx Libertatis 1.0.3 Windows Installer (32-bit)'

Yes, the save format or location hasn't changed in 1.1 - you can load 1.0.x saves in 1.1 and even the other way around.

Arx Libertatis can even load vanilla Arx Fatalis saves if you put them in the right directory, but saves created by AL cannot be loaded by AF.

Before I start you should know that I'm using the Steam version of Arx. The previous Liberatis version ran fine.
The problem is that I can't seem to load my 1.0.3 saves in version 1.1; my saves are located in 'Steam\steamapps\common\Arx Fatalis' in the 'Save' folder. Do I have everything in the right directory? Sorry for being so annoying.

They don't show up in the saves list or is there an error when trying to load them?

That's where vanilla Arx Fatalis puts save files (if installed through Steam).

To use them in Arx Libertatis, copy the 'save' folder to 'My Documents\My Games\Arx Libertatis' for Windows XP or to 'Saved Games\Arx Libertatis' for Windows Vista or newer.

When launching Arx Fatalis through Steam it will use the original version, not Arx Libertatis. Unless you manually add Arx Libertatis to Steam as a non-Steam game, but even then it will be a separate entry in your library.

Actually you can install Arx Libertatis into the 'Steam\steamapps\common\Arx Fatalis' folder and then replace the arx application file with the one from the Liberatis folder. After that you'll able to load liberates through the Library in steam without having to create any new shortcuts. But the saves still don't appear in the game. I copied the save file into the Liberatis folder but no change, and I don't have a 'My Documents\My Games\Arx Libertatis' or a 'Saved Games\Arx Libertatis' location anywhere on my computer, it's all in steam. Windows 7 by the way.

Ah, I see now what changed: In 1.0.x we had a special mode if the data files where not found at any 'standard' location, where Arx used the working directory (Steam sets that to ''Steam\steamapps\common\Arx Fatalis') for data files, but also for config and save files. This mode was removed and we now instead consider the directory containing arx.exe as a 'standard' location for data files.

If you want the old behavior, you can add this to the launch options: --user-dir=. --config-dir=.

Be sure to upgrade to 1.1.1 though as we found that 1.1 contains a regression breaking map markers: Arx-libertatis.org

We have just released a new version (1.1) - does it still crash? If so, please open a bug report at Bugs.arx-libertatis.org
