Ironic. He could save the Federation, but not himself.

First Officer's Log, Stardate 1232.8.

We came here in the hopes of saving our Captain. We failed.

The man who was Kelvar Garth is gone, his soul trapped in the chaotic prison his mind has become. We are taking him to the mental hospital on Elbus II, where he can receive treatment for his condition.

I saw him earlier, in Sickbay. He was under sedation, so I told the nurse to give us privacy. I told him it should have been me in that bed, not him. If he hadn't tackled me out of the way of that plasma surge when we took that last torpedo hit, he would have been fine.

As I turned to leave, I felt a hand grab me. He was awake, despite the sedation, and he spoke to me, completely lucid, as if we were talking about the past day's water polo match. He ordered me to stop moping around and feeling sorry for himself, that he knew what he was getting into when he signed on, and how we were even for that time on Risa.

After that, he fell asleep, finally succumbing to the sedation. That was the last time I heard Kelvar Garth speak, and I fear it may be the last time anyone does.

Description

USS Xenophon orbits Antos IV.

Eight months after the Battle of Axanar, Captain Kelvar Garth's nurses were startled when he suddenly lept forward in his hospital bed, shouting orders as though he were still in the midst of the battle. Garth of Izar was awake!

Garth's injuries were extensive. His missing limbs were replaceable with prosthetics, but his brain injuries were not fully repairable. Though his intellect remained, in the days that followed Garth demonstrated violent mood swings, intense paranoia, and elaborate delusions of grandeur. Garth attempted more than once to escape, and it became physically dangerous for medical staff to be alone with him.

However, Garth also experienced prolonged bouts of lucidity, during which he was both jovial and reasonable. Hope for Garth was not yet gone.

The crew of the USS Xenophon begged Starfleet to allow them to take Garth to the remote world of Antos IV. The gentle Antosians were famed for their ability to heal others. If a cure for Garth's conditions existed, it would be on Antos. Starfleet agreed, and wished them luck.

The Antosians were able to heal Garth's maimed body. By granting him their abilities of cellular metamorphosis, Garth's limbs were completely regrown, as though they had never been lost. They failed, however, to calm Garth's damaged mind. In gratitude for his returned limbs, Garth offered the Antosians the galaxy - and meant every word of it. Astonished, the Antosians graciously declined. Once back aboard the Xenophon, an affronted Garth ordered the Antosians exterminated.

This was the moment the crew of the Xenophon finally recognised that Garth of Izar, their captain and friend, was truly gone. Heartbroken, the crew had Garth restrained, and delivered him to the specialised mental hospital facility on Elbus II, where he could be safe and receive ongoing treatment, and where, hopefully, he could not harm others. Through no fault of his own, Garth of Izar was now a dangerously insane individual.
