Ages of the Federation is a new total conversion mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. This mod takes place in the Enterprise and Original series eras, focusing on the conflict between the early Federation and Klingon Empire. A resurgent Romulan Star Empire, angry and still licking its wounds after their defeat to Earth and her allies waits in the shadows, ready to take advantage of any of misstep by either the warring powers. The Xindi, new to the galactic stage are also eager to forge their own path.
Battered and burning, USS Xenophon makes its final attack run of the Battle of Axanar.
The moment they came within weapons range, the Federation fleet came under intense fire from the Klingons. Garth knew that at long range the Klingons had a decisive advantage. The Klingons would simply batter them into oblivion if given the chance. Charging in at full impulse, Starfleet broke the Klingon formation, manoeuvring hard to attack the Klingons at their flanks wherever possible.
The Klingons countered by using their more manoeuvrable attack ships to speed through the battle, strafing Federation forces. Starfleet's improved phasers, though, were able to track these small raiders much more effectively. On and on like this the battle raged, each side countering the other's tactics as they blasted each other into wreckage.
Garth had met his match - the commander of the Klingon fleet was good. But this deadly stalemate had to end. Garth could see only one solution - cut off the snake's head. His target was the Klingon flagship - a D-6 at the heart of the Klingon formation. The approach would be difficult.
Garth took the Xenophon straight into Axanar's atmosphere. At full impulse the air friction quickly made the ship take on the visage of a blazing fireball streaking across the Axanar sky. Circumventing the Klingon lines, Xenophon then pulled up, charging straight toward the Klingon flagship. The hull still glowing hot, Xenophon unleashed a full volley of torpedoes into the cruiser's underside, ripping it apart.
The loss of their flagship threw the Klingon chain of command into temporary chaos. Though they soon recovered, the brief disruption allowed Starfleet to gain the upper hand. The Klingons' lines soon began to crumble, and the Empire was forced into retreat. Starfleet had fought hard, and won the day.
The news, however, wasn't all good - USS Xenophon had been grievously damaged during its assault run, and Garth himself was critically injured. Perhaps mortally.
I wonder if this will lead to the Garth we saw in TOS???

Startrek.com haven't re-watched TOS in years, but I think this may clear it.
There are various accounts of how Garth received the injuries that led to his insanity. Some say he was hurt on an away team, others that he was infected by an alien disease, others that it was a ship-board accident and still others that he received them in battle.

Hold on. Will AotF have hero ships just like Armada 3? And if so, will Garth be one of them?
That's still being discussed, but if we do have heroes, they will be implemented in a different way to STA3.
