Age of Chivalry is a total conversion for Half-Life 2 currently being developed by Team Chivalry. We are a close group of friends who are dedicated to creating a fun story driven multiplayer experience set in a fantasy world in the medieval ages. We are creating a fast paced and fun first person melee combat system that will take the player to a new level of immersion. The players will be able to take part in sieges, town raids and open war in a story driven game. Our goal is to let the players write the history of the game as the teams battle it out over a sequence of user controlled map cycles depending on the victor. We want to take the overall experience to a new level of fun. All of our members have a solid modding background and we hope that you support our modification as it grows and develops!
The age of kings — an era of peasants, beheadings, and knights in shining armor has long been behind us now but the Age of Chivalry mod for Half-Life 2 grants you the ability to experience it again — the fun parts at least.

The medieval times weren't the best of times. You have the Dark Ages, the Crusades, the Hundred Years' War and the Bubonic Plague among many other things. The age of kings — an era of peasants, beheadings, and knights in shining armor has long been behind us now but the Age of Chivalry mod for Half-Life 2 grants you the ability to experience it again - the fun parts at least. While not exactly historically accurate (there's even a Helm's Deep map!), this mod is one that tackles the problem of FPS melee combat and wrestles it to the ground.
At first glance, many may think this mod to be nothing more than just a simple hack 'n' slash with a shiny exterior. This is definitely not the case. Melee combat has taken a front seat in this mod and offers a healthy moveset to choose from while dueling opponents. Guarding and three different attack options are all controlled via the mouse and allows for forming different strategies. This brings depth to combat and requires more than just frantically clicking one mouse button while running into a swarm of enemies. Time your guard maneuver correctly and you can retaliate with a counterattack. Go for a quick stab and step away before your opponent takes a swing at you. The versatility is there, and I've seen some of the more experienced players hold their own against 2 or even 3 adversaries. Ranged weapons include the crossbow, longbow and an assortment of less effective throwing weapons. While the aiming does take some time to hone, — there's no reticule to help you out — arrows prove their usefulness in many areas of the maps while not turning matches into sniper-fests.
The objective-laden maps are strung together in a campaign style with a somewhat flimsy story. Still, it's a welcomed addition to try and inject some semblance of narrative into a strictly multiplayer affair. Tasks range from storming a castle to rescue a prince to poisoning a village's drinking water and beheading peasants at a chopping block. While all maps have been tuned in the latest 1.1 release, some still have a few kinks to iron out. For the most part though, battles tend to be balanced and engrossing. The layout and structure of the maps feel like something akin to Team Fortress 2, in that you experience this nice blend of teamwork without focusing on it entirely. Lone wolves tend to get chopped to pieces if they stray into enemy territory so that reinforces coordinated charges. Catapults and trebuchets (one even modified as a man launcher!) dot many of the levels and are a complete joy to use. While they don't dominate the battlefield, one well-aimed shot can ruin a coordinated defense and clear the way to an objective.
As far as the the presentation side of things goes, one only has to inspect the recent screenshots and trailer for proof of quality. Everything achieves a consistent standard a couple notches above your average Half Life 2 mod. It's also worth mentioning that version 1.1 also includes the hotly anticipated decapitation feature. Fans thought it criminal not to be able to lop off heads in a mod set during a time period when it was considered fair punishment so the developers delivered. Maybe we'll see some more dismemberment in Age of Chivalry's future. And I mean that in the best way possible.
I hate assigning numbers to these reviews since mods are things that constantly in development, but if you were to force me to prescribe a digit, I would assign Age of Chivalry a solid 8. The melee combat is the most satisfying, far beyond any other mod I've played that has attempted it. The multiple objective based maps give purpose to your multiplayer matches and keep the action focused and centralized as you work through them. If you're craving some medieval combat, consider Age of Chivalry bandwidth well spent.

I so want to play this. But my darn internet keeps cutting out.
wow i'd say that was a damn fair review... i really think the mod's should add there spiffy instruction manual to the ingame side so players see that as well. on 1st download i thought it was just a hack and slash mod and proceeded to do just that, until i learned that it forces you to time every breath into account... once you learn that, you can actually not die 38523489 times to get a kill
you got wireless internet or no?
A great game. The only thing bad are the bots, who are stupid.
i didnt know that the game had bots... lol
well, you dont play multiplayer for the bots, so i consider the prescence of bots itself a luxury
i would say bots are there to fill the gaps to give more meat for the grinder...
Exactly, they especially fill out the battleground map really nicely.
Cool
I'm definitely going to have to check this one out...
Awesome Sauce guys.
Altho I love the game, there are some issues I would love to see fixed. Mainly the animations and timing of them are sometimes awfully weird and feels broken. I've chopt of alot of heads already without swinging my sword at all :p
furder more nice and true review about an even better mod
I find it interesting how the latency issues affect the animations more than it affects the actual hitting, so for example an animation might not even get played whereas the weapon tracing still works perfectly. Kinda stable hitting system there, I'd say.
It's an awesome mod, but My Half-Life 2 Just broke down, giving me the good old "Failed to load Launcher.Dll!" So I'll have to fix up my computer before I can get to play, (No, Reinstalling steam doesn't do the trick.)
The melee in this mod is absolutely depthless. It doesn't feel much different than an all crowbar deathmatch in vanilla HL. Not a bad mod, all in all, but far inferior to PVK.
Far inferior to PVK?!? I don't think so... AoC it's a different thing.
Agree with FJS PVK had horrible range on the weapons and it just seemed like they were weak as hell, and it was way too compicated to really work for me.
Depthless??! Are you sure you're playing the same game?
@ totally different games. Ton of depth in AoC. Weapon types, attack types and blocking are all dynamic vs what you are up against.
Awesome mod I really love the mood and gore :) A must for medieval lovers and melee combat greatness. Nice stuff!
Very nice review. It does a fair job of putting the game into the right light. It also seemed like Hack and Slash to me before and since I didn't bother to download Steam yet, I didn't give it a try.
Seems like a cool game, somewhere along the lines of Battle Grounds and Team Fortress. I truly wish I would play as great as the trailer shows, but I guess that can't be hoped for. Anyway, will try the download now and see for myself. All thanks to the reviewer!
I finally got to play this earlier on. And I must say I am very impressed. While the game I played was very laggy, (My fault on that, and I am sorry) I did find it enjoyable. I really got into the swing of things then died and alomst didn't stop dying.
The one small gripe I have with the mod as a whole is the space that it requires. While I have it, many other mods I play do take up far, far less space.
if only the melee gets as intense as the one in the trailer.
badass.
@Handshakes i guse you dont use real the combat system in AoC, right ?
