Your name is David Leatherhoff, and you're addicted to a new painkiller from a company unknown

They keep coming, and you can't stop taking them.

Lately you have started to experience illusions, dreams picking at your deepest and darkest fears.

Finally, you go to the Hospital, skeeking help. First, however, you make a stop into the bathroom, where another bottle of pills awaits you, standing out like a beacon in the night in your depraved eyes.

When will it all stop?

Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut is a survival horror mod for Half-Life 1. It is an enhanced version of the original Afraid of Monsters.

What's new?

  • New monsters (no Half-Life reskin) and weapons
  • Flashlight can only work with batteries that you pick up
  • Improved maps and totally new maps
  • 4 different endings and altarnate routes
  • Random monster spawns
  • New hud, sprites, textures, sounds, models and animations
  • And a lot of other improvements!

It has been 2 years since this mod got released, so I wanted to somehow celebrate it. The only way I can think of how, is to show you ModDB members, who might have missed this mod, that it exists! As it has been Halloween, I thought that this would be quite interesting to post, as this is a horror mod. Well fitting for this kind of weather and atmosphere that is going on right now.

Some quick info about the mod:

You play a guy named David, who is a drug-addict. He can no longer stand it out, so he decides to seek help at a hospital. When he's there, as addicted he is, he goes into a restroom and takes some more pills. But this time, it goes very wrong. From the pills you take, you start to experience hallucinations, and those hallucinations are your enemies. But you can't stop take the pills, because then you will die.

The mod has four different endings and altarnate routes, which makes it interesting to replay it. And if you see all those endings, you will be rewarded with a secret neat item. There are also plenty of secret hidden things that you can find.

With good things comes even better things

As you might understand, this mod is an improvement of the older version Afraid of Monsters. I made Afraid of Monsters alone, so it didn't turn out that well. So with Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut, I got help from James Marchant, Minuit, with very much things.

You can find Afraid of Monsters here:

Moddb.com

Currently, me and James and some other people, are working with a new Half-Life 1 horror mod called Cry of Fear. It has the same theme, and we think you might like it if you like this mod.

You can find Cry of Fear here:

Error fix

I know some people have complained about an error which says: "Cache_TryAlloc: 12708976 is greater than free hunk" There is a simple fix to that error if you're using Steam. Right click the game in Steam, click properties, click "Set Launch Options", then type;

"-heapsize 512000"

Co-op

There is one more thing I would like to say before this news ends, and that is; how many people would like to see a proper Co-op "expansion" to this mod? If you want, we might be able to make it. That was it for this news. I hope you like Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut, and my other upcoming project.

This is just some very small gameplay, so you can see how it's kinda going to be. The quality is very bad, that's because I just don't want to spoil so...

can i suggest a lot more illusional stuff? like you walk into a room with a picture.. goes to a cut scene of a close up pan of the picture that will then pan to you inside that picture.. for instance:

- in that screenshot with that painting of a forest will go to a cutscene of a closeup of the forest
- then it will pan inside the picture all the way around to the model (the player) standing in the forest
- then you start off in that forest

And to Jenga2112's suggestion, that would miss the whole idea of 'co-op.' Co-op breaks down to cooperate, which can be something such as a joint operation or team effort. It means helping each other or giving assistance to another. What you suggest is more like a small TDM. If co-op were in this game, it would mean you and a friend or two would go about the map helping each other kill monsters and solze puzzles(maybe).

I just beat AoM, and it was great! You did a fantastic job for making a mod all by yourself. I'm looking forward to the Director's Cut! :)

(BTW, it was ShadowXOR who told me about AoM. ;))

I agree, the invisible monsters pissed me off! The transparent zombies didn't bother me though, they were hard to see but still possible to see! They were a great move, but the completely invisible one was annoying.

What is with the new screenshots? Maybe I'm missing something but they look exactly like the original. What has changed in them?
