so far multi-player testing has been lag proof, of coarse this was only over a lan connection with 6 players, but internet based connection will be another story, were still testing that part out.
I dont know much about Homeworlds engine - but if its something internal that could be solved by having fewer Races with more content you could always take the option to let the player choose his race ingame. Like - in the Skirmish-menu youd only roughly have to decide between Hiigaran, Vaygr and Beast and when Ingame, first of all, youd have to pick some kind of beacon or Station to build as your very first buildingoptions that resemble and sets what race youll play. Youd just need to give every Tobari-ship, for example, the prerequisite of the tobari-station/mothership.
This could lead to AI-problems, though, as the ai would probably build the same station or mothership everytime youd start a skirmishmatch.
