Europe in Ruins is a modification for Company of Heroes that converts the game into a MMORTT. Units are purchased and managed on the backend website and transferred into the game for battle. After the battle, the units are automatically updated on the website, units lost are removed from your company, units surviving have their experience levels updated. Best of all, the modification does not affect your Company of Heroes or Opposing Fronts installation or your ability to play the original game with the modification installed!

Ever wanted to just worry about your army and less about your resources? Europe in Ruins is your answer!

War has long been an arena that gamers have loved to play within, take the Call of Duty franchise and Medal of Honor series as examples. Employing movie-like explosions and storytelling, they normally follow a squad or a few single soldiers around and document their experiences. The award-winning Company of Heroes series takes the entire timeline of World War 2, allows the player to follow one such company and play out its famous battles from a RTS perspective. The Europe in Ruins mod for Company of Heroes takes this to the next level and allows you to form a company of soldiers to command through a campaign against live opponents online. Soldiers that you can transform from the greenest recruit into battle-hardened veterans over the course of many engagements.

Unlike most RTS games, EIR removes the need for resource management and instead implements a deeper army management. Each player who makes a new account via Europe in Ruins website first chooses their alliance (Axis or Allies) and then picks their doctrine. Upon completion players will receive 3 different types of resources that can be used to purchase squads and upgrades. You can then manage your newly purchased troops, adding them into platoons which you can then call onto the battlefield whenever you need them. Using this system gives the players of EIR more depth into how their matches will play out.

Europe in Ruins in action on custom map "Bastion"

The gameplay of EIR works on the capture territories concept, where you must take territories in order to increase your company’s population maximum. This is done by making sure there are no enemies within the area you’re trying to capture. Once under your control you can then move onto areas adjacent and capture these, the more you capture the harder it is for the enemy to call for additional troops. On that note, spawns are simple and easy to understand, any number of your platoons at any stage can be brought into the game, watch the population cap though because once it has reached the maximum you cannot spawn any more troops until some are removed from play. This goes back to the overall management of the game, if you put too many troops in one platoon it will be harder to spawn when the population cap is low, so it’s all about finding the balance.

EiR!

Retreating damaged units makes sure they come back to fight another day!

After the battle you can head back to the EIR website and access your War Control Panel, where you can see all the stats for your company. Any squads you lose in battle are lost forever and you will need to re-purchase them, although if some should survive the battle they will come out with any experience they have plus any weapons the squad captures on the field (i.e. mortars and HMG’s). This increases the overall efficiency of the squad - so if your company can survive future battles they could be very powerful force to be reckoned with. You also receive additional resources and 'Command Points' which you can use to increase your skills, overall army size and any additional upgrades like airstrikes.

Europe in Ruins wouldn’t be the mod it is today without its community of dedicated players. Thanks to the external measures set up by the developers behind EIR, connecting and finding a game has never been so easy. Connect to their dedicated Ventrilo channel and find players from the opposite faction to play against. The EIR Launcher displays all available games to join or create yourself. Once a battle has all the people it needs, the program automatically downloads all the files needed for the specific battle and launches the mod for you. The dedicated community stretches further than that, creating tutorials and custom maps that are more focused on the gameplay that comes with EIR. I have never seen a community so passionate and so welcoming before with a mod in such early stages.

Europe in Ruins company management

Overall Europe in Ruins does have quite a big learning curve but thanks to the video tutorials that have been posted here on ModDB, it’s now a simple affair and the community themselves are very welcoming towards newcomers. If you’re a lover of the RTS genre, or just a fan of the WW2 era then this mod will not disappoint you at all. Considering how I purchased COH purely for this experience makes it all worth the $50 I paid for the game.

Pros:
- Small download in size
- Challenging game style
- Creates new exciting army management systems
- Simple and elegant game setup
- Great community and community related resources

Cons:
- Big learning curve

Score:
8.5/10 - Almost perfect, always updating, friendly community well worth getting into!

I love RTT games like this, but I don't have the time to dedicate to something of EIR's scope. Is there a quick-match option?

I was under the impression that you had to manage persistent armies on a persistent world map.

Setting up your army on the website will probably take you 20-30 minutes your first time and then 5-10 minutes on subsequent occasions. Once you set up your company you can play individual games right away! Games last a maximum of 65 minutes including deployment time (defenders get 2-3 minutes to set up before attackers enter) so you don't have to dedicate more than an hour at a time to the game! Thus, the beauty of EiR is that you get a persistant RTS broken into bite-sized pieces.

After each battle you spend a few minutes on the website replenishing you losses and tweaking the configuration of your platoons and then are you are ready to go again.

so... no persistent world map? a la risk, rise of nations etc. the overall strategy being dictated by a "congregation" of 'generals'.
hmm, well that's a disappointment..

Unfortunately, managing units between battles is exactly what I can't be bothered with; largely because I don't want the hassle of losing all of my good ones on a bad day and having to grind against players with an advantage over me to build them back up. A per-game point- or slot-based selection system like Ground Control's would be far preferable to me.

Yeah, think of it more like a great RTS but everything is persistant. So there are 2 factions battling it out (Axis vs Allies) but to play you just hop on and play. :)

Hell yeah! Some of my fondest and most tense gaming moments were had playing through the Close Combat III campaign against my flatmate on a simple desktop-laptop LAN. Although this mod seems to be a lot faster paced, and with a couple of things missing (e.g. no smoke mortars)it still looks awesome!

For the match in the podcast, were both teams playing with fog of war on? I'd assume so, but having never played CoH or EiR, it's difficult to tell how each side is getting recon on the enemy positions. It was a great match, though and the video clearly shows the amount of depth and complexity to this mod's gameplay. Definitely one I could see myself getting into...

well if you see them they can see you, as well as recon flights and other nifty things. There are smoke mortars but i think is a special ability in EIR i could be wrong tho

Henley, that's not necessarily true. Bikes/Jeeps have further line of site than some units which can create a situation where you can see them, and they can't see you.

Is there a reason they aren't really used as much? In CC III smokes from mortars or infantry grenades were pretty much invaluable for throwing down blind spots for a range of tactical purposes (making covert advances to get within range of deadly cornerstone units, moving key units to secret new locations to catch them off guard or bluff, slowing down the enemy advance and making it more treacherous for them, etc.). A well-placed smoke in front of an anti-tank would totally block its vision and allow a tank to move right up to take out the crew with close-range anti-infantry weaponry.

***** I just started playing EIR and I have to say, it is a blast. Watch the tutorials! Very important. There are a few bits of info that is missing from the online guides, but due to how easy it is to get a company up and running, after just a couple of games, you should have everything you need to be competitive. Word of advice, just build one company (you get three per account) and practice with it before building anything else. You'll be amazed at how different you set up others once you've gotten in a few games.

just one little crit of the review, COH doesnt allow you to play through the entire ww2 timeline its only normandy and the following campaigns on the western front (there were 5 years of war before this 1939-1944 with the war ending in 45 obv just not wanting to get flamed for being stupid) and like i said before it only includes 1 front. Still nice review though just had to pull up that one little thing.
