Empires is a mod for Half-Life 2 which will combine the genres of real-time strategy and first person shooter. Each team has four classes to choose from (scout, rifleman, grenadier, and engineer) with unique weapons and skills each. One player will become the commander by entering the team's command vehicle to build the team's base and lead his team to victory. Once your base is built up, purchase vehicles from your team's vehicle factory to open up another facet of Empires' gameplay. Vehicles can be customized with unique weapons, armor, and engines. The commander can research improvements to all aspects of vehicles such as longer range cannons, homing missiles, and armor-piercing machine gun rounds. Once your team is prepared, lead an assault into the enemy base. The enemy team is defeated when all players are wiped out with either no place to respawn or no reinforcements remaining or the team's command vehicle is destroyed.

Empires 2.1 is starting to come together and should be available shortly. The main focus of this patch is to fix crash issues that have been reported along with some other minor bugs. In addition to fixes, we're adding several new features. One of them is collapsable walls. When walls are destroyed or recycled, they will break into pieces and either crumble when destroyed by an engineer tool or explode with force when destroyed by an explosive projectile. This is a preview of what all buildings and vehicles will have in the future. Infantry research will also find its way into this patch in the form of being able to research upgraded grenadier RPGs that will allow infantry to remain effective even when heavy tanks fill the battlefield. The patch will soon enter testing and then be released to the public.

My question is to do with a very common crash I'm having whenever the map changes. The error I get is:

Internal error in IDirect3DDevice9::Present()

I'm using a Radeon x1900 GT (by Sapphire, 256MB), DirectX 9.0c, Athlon 3800+, 2x512MB paired RAM, WinXP (Home Ed). I can't see how any of my hardware should adversely affect things. Is anyone else having this problem? It's really annoying because roughly 60% of the time a mapload will crash the game to Windows and I'll have to manually 'end' HL2.exe.

try putting this into the launch options of the mod in steam

-dxlevel 80 (this will start the game in DX8 and not 9 as it seems that the problem you're having is with DX9)

I really hate to be asking for help, but I can't seem to find anything about this problem I'm having. I just downloaded the game and moved the files into the Steam MOD directory. The game boots up and runs, but when I get into a server, most models are purple and black squares. All tanks, most buildings and characters are like this. As well as the interface. The weapon load out screen is black and purple, with no pictures. Can anyone help with this situation?

Try downloading the mod from a different source or unzipping/extracting with a different program. Sounds like the textures are corrupt which can happen from a corrupt download/extraction.

I was wondering how fast of a internet connection you need to play this game?

I think you should be fine with a 100+/- kB connection.
I have a 384 kB connection and it is just fine.

Awesome mod! The only thing is is that it is criminally underpopulated.
