Empires is a mod for Half-Life 2 which will combine the genres of real-time strategy and first person shooter. Each team has four classes to choose from (scout, rifleman, grenadier, and engineer) with unique weapons and skills each. One player will become the commander by entering the team's command vehicle to build the team's base and lead his team to victory. Once your base is built up, purchase vehicles from your team's vehicle factory to open up another facet of Empires' gameplay. Vehicles can be customized with unique weapons, armor, and engines. The commander can research improvements to all aspects of vehicles such as longer range cannons, homing missiles, and armor-piercing machine gun rounds. Once your team is prepared, lead an assault into the enemy base. The enemy team is defeated when all players are wiped out with either no place to respawn or no reinforcements remaining or the team's command vehicle is destroyed.

5 comments by Krenzo on Oct 20th, 2006 digg this super bookmark

It's been awhile since our last update so allow me to bring everyone up to speed on the situation. We're focusing all of our efforts on completing 1.08 which is going to be a large update. Our code base has been converted to the new Source SDK which fixes several bugs.

Since our last public version, we've gained a new weapon animator, Damian, who has been hard at work on redoing all of our weapon animations. In addition to the new animations, Duke, our lead artist, has remodeled and retextured all of our weapons to be of higher visual quality. We've also picked up a new sound artist who has been working closely with Damian to redo all of the weapon sound effects.

1.08 will also feature two new maps from two team members we've had onboard for awhile, and their efforts are finally coming to frutition. "Streets of Fire", mapped by Grizzly, takes place in a large city that is the latest battleground in the fight between the Northern Faction and the Brenodi. "Glycen City", mapped by Warfle, is somewhat of a sequel to the BF1942 Empires map "Glycen Pipeline." Players will have to capture flags as well as civilian factories to gain resources for vehicle construction.

Awsome game. Really looking forward to the 2.0 release. Internal testing has gone really well and the current build is very stable and super fun. Weapons/vehicles have been balanced better as well, more epic tank battles and less arty and turret spam. 20+ internal releases over the past couple of months have really polished this game off! See you on the Battlefield in 2.0 and feel free to ask me lots of questions like where you can get ammo.

In game nick CW JCW87 or U JJ45

To anyone browsing after seeing the latest info on 2.0, I seriously, SERIOUSLY recommend getting it when it comes out.

I've been an empires player since 1.0. Back then, the mod had tons of problems with lag, and if you're one of the people who stopped playing because of that, rest assured those problems don't exist anymore. I'd get into a big rant about how it was a beta, but Krenzo explained this in the interview.

Rather, I'd just like to say that this is one of the best mods I have ever played. Krenzo and the rest of the Empires developers are some of the best in the business, pulling off things some said impossible.

This mod is one of the most indepth games I've ever played, has some of the coolest features I've ever seen, and one of the greatest communities to boot. Download 2.0 when it comes out.

Empires is freaking awesome!

And is even dial-up friendly!

(those with less than 44000 bits/sec actual throughput need not apply. That's 5500 bytes/sec throughput, or about 5.3KB/s absolutely sustainable during downloads.)
