Empires is a mod for Half-Life 2 which will combine the genres of real-time strategy and first person shooter. Each team has four classes to choose from (scout, rifleman, grenadier, and engineer) with unique weapons and skills each. One player will become the commander by entering the team's command vehicle to build the team's base and lead his team to victory. Once your base is built up, purchase vehicles from your team's vehicle factory to open up another facet of Empires' gameplay. Vehicles can be customized with unique weapons, armor, and engines. The commander can research improvements to all aspects of vehicles such as longer range cannons, homing missiles, and armor-piercing machine gun rounds. Once your team is prepared, lead an assault into the enemy base. The enemy team is defeated when all players are wiped out with either no place to respawn or no reinforcements remaining or the team's command vehicle is destroyed.

The next public release of Empires, Beta 2 or 2.0 if you desire, will soon be available to you. After roughly twenty internal releases to our play testers, we've developed Empires into a version that is faster, better looking, bug free, and very optimized compared to the last public version (1.07). Features that people have asked for since 1.0 such as a better squad management interface, an interface to vote in a commander at map start, and others are now included. The networking code has undergone some major improvements. Many people were satisfied with 1.07's networking, but that wasn't good enough for us. With Beta 2, we've optimized the networking code to use 50% less bandwidth compared to 1.07. Our internal testing sessions have reached up to 46 players in a single game.

this is *very* good news if it plays out to be true. I have no doubt that this mod can reach a high level of greatness, but in the first release, the bugs really hindered everything. If it runs twice as well... I'm definitely in

You won't be dissapointed. If you enjoyed the last public version, you will stick around after this one.

Empires was really good, before the restrictions on vehicle weights and total number (as well as research I think) were introduced. It killed the game since vehicles were its whole reason for existence.

Vehicle weight limits and max number of vehicles were always in the game. You're thinking of the speed at which resource nodes gave resources to build. That was toned down after 1.0 because no one cared about getting more resource nodes since one or two was plenty. It sounds like you only played up until 1.03 or around there. Everything has been tweaked since 1.07 for the better, and we've been tweaking and balancing the game for the past year in private with lots of testers giving feedback. If you ever thought Empires was fun, then you will enjoy Beta 2. Just give it a chance.

At least you should be able to benefit from the optimization in Episode 2, if they ever release the updated SDK.

We're planning on releasing without the Ep 2 SDK. It would add more work and testing if we switched. We plan on switching after Beta 2 is released as the support for multiple cpus is highly desired for both players and servers.
