The Northern Excursion mod (once called the "Extreme Realism" mod) is a game-enhancement mod that introduces a new faction, the "North American Coalition" (NAC), re-introduces the jet fighter/bomber air vehicle types from Battlefield 2 and also brings back old features which were left out of the original Battlefield 2142 such as stationary machine guns, visual effects, unused voice overs and more.
The model for the NAC Recon sniper rifle. It is basically a sniper rifle which uses magnetic propulsion to fire its bullets, hence the rails on the end of the barrel. We haven't thought of a name for it yet.

Nice, before I read the description, I was going to ask if it was a rail gun. Now I've always wondered if a rail gun would have recoil, and I guess it would from the magnetic propulsion.
What's a rail gun?
A railgun uses an extremely powerful electric current to accelerate metal slugs (usualy tungsten) to hypersonic speeds(mach 5+). The name railgun comes from the fact that the projectile contacts two paralel metal rails to create a curcuit for the aformentioned current.

All projectile weapons have recoil because of Newton's third law (...equal & opposite reaction). Railguns, however, have less recoil becuase less energy is expended than that of chemical propelents and the sheer velocity of a round fired from a railgun allows you to do more damage with less mass.
It just occurred to me that this is a one hit kill weapon. Even if the round is only a 3mm flechete, the cavitation at mach 5 would be devastating. Hits a limb bone, dismemberment. Through the muscle tissue of the leg, bone shattered, main artery shredded, death in about 20 seconds. In short, the damage is a little more than a Barret .500 sniper round. This will kill beyond revival anywhere in the torso or thighs.
Don't think too hard about it, it's just a game.
I tend to think about every detail of things. It's just this used to be "Extreme Realism" and I like it when games follow logic and the laws of physics, that's why I hate MW2.(Riot shield does not beat Barret, EVER!!!)

I just saw an episode of "The Universe" and it described a rail gun. IT'S SO FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!
And it would relocate your arm to the next continent!
