Imagine a world where the Allies didn't win the war, nor did the Axis. Instead, the war just continued on and on in an unsteady stalemate. Welcome, to the world of 1949. In this world Germany decided not to bomb London, but instead continued its attacks on Britain's airfields. Then, the Russians lost at Kursk. Finally, D-Day fails. With these victories, Germany has managed to halt the Allie's progress. In the Western Theatre, the Allies and the Axis each plan the invasion of the other's vital territories. In the Pacific, Japan and the United States are dueling over tiny islands with giant fleets and atomic weapons. Now, the stalemate is about to be broken. Germany is preparing an all out invasion of Britain. As tough and valiant as the Allied troops defending the Sceptered Isle are, some of their leaders are beginning to that they will be unable to hold against the Wehrmacht.

The Army of Tomorrow

This command tree offers access to the most advanced weapons and upgrades the U.S. Army can get. First, on the left hand side, we have the M-24 Chaffee Requisition ability, which allows you to call in Chaffee tanks early on. Their CP value might be lower in the actual release.

Second, we have Sherman Retrofit, which provides a new engine for the Sherman tank, making it faster and not quite as easy to set alight.

Finally, there is the M-46 tank. This powerful main battle tank can face down some of Germany's best armor, though one should think twice before sending it up against a Maus.

For the first of the right side rewards, there is AK-47 Rearmament, which allows you to purchase AK-47 assault rifles for any of your infantry units.

After that, there is Body Armor, an upgrade that provides the latest in undershirt protection.

Last but not least, we have the Atomic Artillery Shell. Since the U.S. Air Force can't afford to risk sending in an actual bomber over France for fear of Germany's ME 262s, they have had to resort to condensing the bomb into the form of an artillery shell. This is then launched over long distances with precise calculations pinpointing its trajectory. This weapon is extremely rare, and it is only in a few instances that the American High Command will approve its use, or be able to requisition one, for that matter.

Well, there you are, the Army of Tomorrow. However, that is not all I am revealing today. I have conceived of a special (non-historical) bonus faction, the identity of which will remain a secret for now. Feel free to guess in the meantime. I'll probably announce its identity in the next news update. Note that the bonus faction is a long term project, and would not be released until after the Soviets, Great Britain, and the Panzer Elite.

Thanks for you time,
Lord Wiffleby

If I recall correctly the adoption of M16 rifles found strong opposition because its caliber was deemed lacking in power, range etc. Wouldn't a domestic produced .30 caliber battle rifle make more sense? They even experimented with full-auto garands that accepted BAR magazines.

I agree, giving the Americans AK-47s, especially in 1949, is ridiculous. The M-14 would be a better (more realistic) choice, and it is infinitely better from med-to-long range then the AK

No it wouldn't, the M-14 was designed in 1954. The AK-47 was being produced much earlier.

America needs a mid to short range assault rifle, and the Russians just happen to have a cheap one that is easy to mass produce. Cheap mass production is especially vital, seeing as America needs quantity more than quality. So, therefore, America got the designs from Russia and started producing the rifle in their own factories. You may ask why Russia would do such a thing? That is because they need to make sure that America remains in the war, in spite of domestic discontent.

So America got beaten up quite bad in the mod's timeline and is in need of help from the USSR? Then it kinda makes sense, still the concept of assault rifle kinda clashed with American doctrine of the time.

@Lord_Wiffleby
true it was, but this is also a mod suggesting some pretty fanciful gadgets for the opposing sides. i mean, if the germans can have the maus tank, i think the americans should have the m14.

*incidentaly, had ww2 stretched out as long as this mod is suggesting, you probably would have seen the m14 developed a few years ahead of time or at least a similar weapon type that doesnt have a hammer and crescent stamped on it ya know?

America's army was still using the M1-Garand and M1-Carbine during Korea. They were using the Thompson as well, but that is a very expensive weapon. The AK-47 acts a replacement for the Thompson that can also function rather well at medium range, not to mention with a low cost of production. Furthermore, it rarely jams, and it can put a bullet through most light cover. I might conceptualize a new name for the weapon for its American production, but it is still Russia's AK-47.

The M1-Garand is still a good enough rifle for long range engagements. The faction that will truly excel at long range is the Brits, but they will come later.

Agreed. If only for propaganda purposes, it should be renamed to emphasize that it's not the rifle of the Communists, but "actually" an all-american "variant" of it. Also adds to the exotic feeling of this all, heh.

@Wiffleby
i am aware of that, but this is an alternate history timeline where things that never happened did happen.
it is more plausible imho for the US to develop a weapon a few years sooner than it actually did than it is for us to copy a weapon that did not (and still does not) suit our combat doctrine from a nation that many americans (citizens and government) were uneasy with, even then.
unless you're going to create some backstory handwaving, its always best to create an alternate history with a grain of truth.

just my $0.02 :)

As always, input is appreciated. However, you must remember that America's government is doing the best it can to hold itself together. Americans have never dealt with long wars very well, particularly not ones that are in stalemate or danger of being lost. As such, the government is swallowing its pride to add this weapon to their production in hopes that it can somehow influence the war in their favor. It is cheaper than the Thompson, and accomplishes the same task with arguably greater efficacy. The M1 Garand, which is similar to the M14, does not really need to be created. Most American troops use the M1 Carbine now anyway, mostly because it is cheap. Cheap mass production is the most vital part of America's war machine now, because it is facing a battle hardened and advanced Wehrmacht that controls the air.

Also, even if the M14 had been invented recently, it would be in the testing stage, making it very rare. Historically, the weapon wasn't even adopted until about 1959. The E-Series panzers that will appear in this mod will take a long time to produce for the very reason that they are so new. In any case, you are entitled to your opinion. That's pretty much all I have to say on the matter anyway, except that the AK is here to stay. I hope you don't mind too much.

I love the idea of having an American AK47, but perhpas considering American Doctrine of the time,having learned little until pre-Nam era, They should have a larger caliber version of the AK, perhaps we can call it an AK-47US (United States) and give it smaller mag and more range/power/reload time and fire rate. I'm sure the Russians wouldn't mind making the greedy Capitalists a weapon to prove the superiority of Soviet Engineering :D .

Also considering the predominance of the M1 Carbine, then perhaps we should include the M3 as the snipers/spotters weapon and the M2 as a seperate upgrade in one of the other Doctrines

No problem man, its your mod. It just feels weird to have the AK when I personally feel that theres better options, but thats just my opinion.

(The M1 Carbine was mainly a paratrooper weapon BTW, the regular army still mostly used the Garand until '57, it chambered a larger round and was longer ranged.)

I doubt I'll include the Leopard. Maybe someday, but the fact that it was canceled because it wasn't considered an effective investment and because of role redundancy makes its inclusion highly unlikely. The Maus will be added, partially because it fills a special role, but mostly because it's my favorite tank. Ever.

Nuclear... artillery? Wouldn't it make much better sense to have it as a cruise or ballistic missile?

The U.S. Army did construct atomic artillery. Besides, most of our best rocket and missile inventors were looted from the Germans after the war in the real timeline. Without the work of men like Werner Von Braun, America would not have progressed with the speed it did in reality (which was still rather slow).

I know people have brought up the idea of the Ak-47, but instead of suggesting the m14 or otherwise, would it not be prudent to instead to use an American equivalent? I personally suggest the Thompson Light Rifle, arguably the first American Intermediate assault rifle.
