With regular system crashes and over-driven equipment, a disaster must have been inevitable.Deep within the tunnels and carved corridors of the top secret research complex within the mesa itself, the catalyst was introduced.
When your only companion (indeed your best and only friend of this piddling existence) suffered from an untimely death, you couldn't help but feel lost and vulnerable. And when you stumbled into a series of strange and unnatural incidents, you soon realized that no one cared about YOUR life. No one would take the time to befriend you... to help you... to save you.
People were dieing.And your best friend was one of many victims.You were forced to survive alone.To live by any means necessary.And to do it your way.
Of course, it didn't help that you were born a cat.
Cat-Life is an original concept for Half-Life and the GoldSource engine.Players will experience the Black Mesa incident from the view of a stranded pet cat.
Using claws and teeth and the natural prowess of a cat, players will travel through the bowels of Black Mesa.Xenian beasts roam the corridors and laboratories and... surprise... cats are conveniently bite-sized for those in-between-meal munchies.

In late 2003 and early 2004 there was a number of Cat-Life planning discussions on the Garg-o-holics forums. One of the most important public topics was a name. The name of our cat.
As discussed previously, such topics have long since been lost to the void of the internet.
So much the better.
As the project has been driven forward by the current team, the issue of a name has arisen once again. Specifically, the team would like to invite the public to aid in the naming of our cat.
The process will be simple, and we encourage suggestions.
Part One of the process will begin tonight. Suggest pet names for our cat. To do so, send an email to feedback@bwl.hl2files.com or post a message in this thread. Discussion and "lobbying" is encouraged. Use the forum thread to support a given name.
Part 2 will begin on Saturday, the 22nd of March. At that time, we will open a poll of about five names for voting. That poll will be open for one week. The name with the most votes will be proposed to the mod team for use in the mod.
This way, we will have a community chosen name by the end of the month and we can refer to our title character as something other then "cat".

Positions still open...
3D Artists/Improvement - Mesh, skin, animate, and improve the 3D models. The cat model is already working and in-game thanks to bodyhun. However, help in making custom skins & models, or tweaking existing content is still welcome.
Mappers and Level Designers - Make a map or improve existing maps. The choice is yours.
Sound Developers - Mix and record custom sound effects.
Music Composers - Mix and write custom musical scores for the game.
Voice Actors - Certain key characters need spoken dialogue... can you act?

Security guards in black mesa are losers...and anyway, the most of them don't have enough patience for standing in a door, and guard the cubehead scientists, so..they start training cats!! Or this cat is the pet of a scientist like Lamarr? XD
You play as a pet cat that has recently lost its master to the Black Mesa Incident. Details of the story beyond that are still confidential.

Wow this is just so cool. but why HL1 and not 2?
To make a long story short, it was a question of simplicity in developing. The original project began prior to HL2 and after a number of setbacks, the HL content was still viable.
