5 comments by joure on Sep 14th, 2013

Hi folks. I've decided to post here on the 1187 ModDB page because in a way this affects 1187 and I believe that some of the fans might be curious what I've been doing all this time.

So yeah, Contagion's the name, zombie survival co-op at it's best is the game. Yesterday our kickstarter went live. Contagion's in it's final stretches of development which means our Kickstater will come with all the information on pricing, release schedule, and most of the questions we've been asked since Contagion was announced.

The reason for this Kickstarter is to help us in the final stages of Contagion's development. Up to this point all development costs, licenses required to continue our work, our trips to GDC, PAX, and Gamescom, and much more has been all out of our own pockets and while we'd very much like to finish without asking, we're just so close and it's time we ask our community, fans, and hopefuls to help us reach the milestone that will get the ball rolling on it's own. We need your support to help in the final stretches of development. We hope to see our 1187, ZP:S, NMRiH, and new Contagion fans showing their support!
.

We had a Preliminary Beta Key give away the least few days and we're getting a lot of positive feedback from the beta players. It's an early beta and there's a lot of room for us to improve, while that being said, the beta release has gone extremely well and we've already updated the game and will be doing so until release.

I hope to see some of you guys back the project and help us in realizing our dream of creating a fun and unique, true coop zombie survival experience.

The kickstarter can be found here:
Kickstarter.com

And the HD version of our new trailer here:
Youtube.com

With some luck the next news update will actually be 1187 related. Thanks for reading and thanks again for all the support so far.

Well, just some halfway thoughts. Not bad but I'm not terribly impressed by the gameplay, although the design and graphics are very nice! First, your little buddy gets on my nerves! Second, why is this so absurdly and erratically difficult? I had to put this down onto Easy, and even then it will often take 2 or 3 double-barrel shotgun blasts to put down a regular zombie. Equally excessive for the houndeyes. Maybe this is something that comes out later in the storyline, but I don't understand why the soldiers are shooting at you too. There's almost too much going on: it's like I'm not even playing the game right now, I'm going through a scene, dying or close, then going back to beat the scene, not play the game. Does that make sense? Maybe I should move this to a keyboard command, but I've got the middle button set up as the sights button, and more often than not I end up scrolling to the next weapon instead of sighting, something else that keeps costing me a lot of life, and I'm not used to not automatically switching to a loaded weapon when your selected one goes dry. Also, probably my biggest complaint is that you can't set up Turn Left/Right keys like with any other mod (or just about any other game, period.) I like having my keyboard set up a very particular way with Half Life, and I just can't do it that way with this game. That's been more of an annoyance than a deadly flaw, but just one more thing I'm not loving here. Another bit that really put me off it right at the beginning was after the tunnel opens and all the zombies escape, I took them all out, went back to the apartment, and 3 or 4 were just standing there beating up on Cupcake. Not sure how long they were on him, but he really ought to have been long dead! So I intend to play this through, and maybe I'll think better of it by then, but so far this just isn't a lot of fun.

OK, have finished and left a better review than the above might have you expecting. Bottom line, I liked the second half quite a bit more, see review if interested.

But a couple of odd glitches, or maybe it was all the same one:

Warning!

Severe spoilers!

Severe spoilers!

Severe spoilers!

After the battle when you get past the barn, there is a sequence again in underground tunnels, leading to the parking garage and then to the house & observatory. In one of the chambers, right above a wide flight of stairs, John wouldn't move. I played ahead, thinking it was another of his "moods," but went all the way ahead to the observatory without a thing happening. I had to go back and literally push him down the stairs, across the room, and through the door! (All to his prissy little "Hey! Personal space!") At that point he started running ridiculously fast, beat me to the house, and Chris showed up. However, Chris wouldn't do his stuff in the observatory, and I had to run the sequence a 3rd time before it all played right! The last time, John stayed with me, instead of racing ahead. Not a huge issue, but curious if anyone else had this, or if you do, it is fixable.

Anyone else getting a bug where the keys "1", "2" and "4" become double-binded? As in, 2 scrolls up the list of weapons instead of selecting weapons in the 2 slot, 4 scrolls down instead of selecting weapons in the 4 slot and 1 acts like "Q" wherein it swaps between the two previous weapons.

Tried to do unbind 2 etc. which worked once, but not anymore. Any solutions please? It's quite annoying and messing with my gameplay.

Otherwise, a really fun mod so far, excellent VA, fantastic music and a fun storyline. I love it! :D

How do you zoom out sniper scope? The crashed course's guide is practically mumbling (very poor diction) and there are no captions and I can't understand what he says about it. I tried all key combinations but my scope zooms in and stays zoomed forever.

there actually is a manual that you can access within the game. Standard key binds are v to zoom in and v+g to zoom out.

The visuals were okay but the gameplay was frustrating and badly designed. Nearly EVERY design decision they made was a bad one. Removing noclip, flashlight only working on some of the guns, ugly view bobbing, annoying companion whom you have to babysit 24/7. The list goes on and on. The gameplay at the start is incomprehensible. Instead of going for the tried and true design of giving the player subtle hints on where to go, the mappers opted for a "dump them in a maze with abritaryly locked doors…
