Hey all, I'm the current Tyranid Mod administrator. Just so's you know, I don't check my personal page regularly so I am liable to miss any comments you leave me here. Anyone wanting to give feedback on or ask questions about the Tyranid Mod should do so at the Tyranid Mod page or the Tyranid Mod forum (check my homepage link). :)

It'll be longer than a month for 0.5b3 sadly. I've got a new post pending though with a few links. If people can find more I'd be happy to update it too. :)

Actually, what I should do is make a news post sometime soon with all the mods that have been made with NidMod compatibility.

Always good to spread around the love.

If you'd read any of his comments on Warforge, you'd know otherwise. They call us "evil capitalists" over there, he seriously believes this is a fight of communism vs capitalism.

He also seems to have got it in his head that I've made up the whole deal about protecting my modellers' interests (despite it being something they asked me to do years ago) and that I'm denying everyone the use of the Tyranid Mod even though we actively encourage people to make combiner mods.

In fact, the only reason you're in this position is because you were too lazy to change the way you coded things. So it has nothing to do with "evil capitalists" and everything to do with your own selfishness.

He's delusional - he's now added a comment on his news item to say that "copyrightsers" never make any good mods or 3D content and never do any work.

This after taking ALL his 3D content from other mod teams. Seriously, what a whack job.

If we "never made any interesting 3D content" then why are you stealing ours?

Seriously, you're saying we never work when you steal almost all of our content for yourself RATHER than do any work. In fact, aren't basically ALL the models in your mod from other mod teams?

Eh, if need be I can just screenshot the entire conversation I had with him over private message.

I was clear with him then, I've been clear with him since and his actions have forced him to retreat onto a forum that supports completely illegal mods that have extracted DoW2 resources for public distribution to continue his work. I think that raelly demonstrates how out of step he is with the modding community.

Looks like he deleted my latest comments too, but that's not surprising since they very clearly showed him to be a liar and a fraud.

@Rocket Banana's first post:
For the record I actually attempted to do exactly this.

Despite the way GrOrc's been painting this, I responded to his initial request within an hour of him sending it advising him of how to go about seeking permission of the individual content owners. They did not respond to him OR me chasing it up for him, so (as per the standing arrangement with have with every Tyranid Mod contributor since Stryer) we couldn't give him permission. Simple as that.

It was made very clear to him that he could use a combiner method to achieve basically the same effect and he rejected the offer purely because he didn't want to have to make the necessary tweaks to do it that way.

It's also worth noting that what he asked for was a lot less than the total amount of things he stole from our mod too - he never asked us about the UI art, the sounds, and so on. So basically in the end he ripped out almost everything from our mod for his own use.

Not really surprising behaviour from someone who outright said that in his opinion "Silence is sign of consent."

You're misunderstanding the way the law works on this. You don't need to claim ownership of the Tyranid IP to claim ownership of Tyranid art you've created and prevent other people from using that art.

It works the same way as it does with physical objects. If I were to build a Tyranid model, that model is mine and if someone decides to steal it or publish photographs of it without my permission, then that's theft and I can press charges. Nobody - not Games Workshop nor GrOrc - has the legal authority to do that.

I don't need to claim to own the entire Tyranid IP to defend derivative art. I simply cannot attempt to profit off them.

You're somewhat right but also somewhat wrong.

The models, taken as works of art, belong to their creators not GW and as such legal action can be taken if other people use them without permission. GW can ask us to take down our modification if they want, and we would be forced to comply. They could not demand that we hand over our models for their own use however. They could ask politely though or pay us for them.

Similarly GW do not have the legal right to publish photographs of any physical models Warhammer players have made and painted without their permission, for the same reason.

And if THQ (or whoever holds the DoW license now that THQ doesn't exist) ever published an expansion for Dawn of War in which Tyranids featured and used a resource that looked like Influence, I could take them to court for it.

So yes, I can take GrOrc to court over it if I wished. He used art that did not belong to him without permission. It's theft and there's legal recourse for it.

Legal action can be taken if people's work is used without their permission. It's called theft.

Our modellers did not give their permission for him to use their work (he asked, they did not provide consent). Our UI artists did not give permission for him to use our UI backgrounds and button images (things he never asked if he could use, but used anyway). Neither did our sound artists for all their work that he took (again he didn't ask). Neither did I for my concept work which he stole without asking - naming schemes for buildings, the use of an Influence rip-off resource or the hivefleet construction mechanic (again, never asked to use these).

Does that answer your question?

Incidentally I can claim intellectual property for some of the components of the Tyranid Mod, particularly the building names, the Influence resource mechanic and such, because those are all wholely my creations and never existed prior to my designs for the Tyranid Mod.

As a comparison, we had to explicitly asked Marco Schulze (google him) if we could include the Hivefleet Moloch colour scheme in the mod because that's his intellectual property. He said yes. If he'd said no, we would have left it out.

Always willing to take balance suggestions. In fact, if anyone wants to assist us with balance, the assistance would be most welcome.

I'm not willing to take people claiming to be "advanced persons" when the majority of their "creative activity" is stealing other people's work and ideas, and then complaining when they get stopped.

You need to build other buildings to make other units.

To do that you need to use the build menu, the button for which is at the centre-top of the UI bar across the bottom of your screen.

This mod uses stolen assets, knowingly taken without permission and against the wishes of the Tyranid Mod.

GrOrc was offered a way of including the work we've put into the Tyranid Mod, he refused and decided to just take what he wanted from us instead because it was easier.

Please assist us in reporting this mod and GrOrc.

Your mod uses stolen assets, explicitly used without permission.

The fact that you have no respect for the legal rights of other modders is irrelevant.

>Except you haven't been granted free usage.<

Free usage >requires the assets to be put under open license which has not been done.<

There is no free usage clause on our mod or its assets. Mentioning that you didn't make the assets isn't sufficient, as you've been repeatedly told now by multiple people.

The reason my response is "rude" is because I'm sick of explaining this to you over and over.

Use without permission violates ownership rights and the law. End of story.

How are you not getting this?

Good karma+6 votes

You're actually wrong here. All creative activity is covered by law.

Good karma+9 votes

zahaqiel @ A Word on Ownership

My modellers, however, ARE engaged in commercial activities. They own these models and use them in their portfolios to get jobs.

You stealing them undermines their real world life, because it makes their work look non-unique. It also encourages people who might employ them to steal their work because it's less easily traceable if other people have too.

Get your head out of your arse. This isn't just about modding.

That's because spore chimneys generate Influence, not Requisition.

Requisition is generated by reclamation pools.

The AI is still broken for a lot of people, even after the hotfix. We know it's a problem and we should have it fixed in 0.5b3.

It's not that the strategies are too tame, it's that it's not using them. :P

Cool idea, but a bit challenging to do - map terrain is uneven, and can wind up with ground-level FX free-floating and other weirdness.

Sounds like it's missing its locale files. You may need to uninstall and reinstall the mod.
