I live in Nijmegen, developing games is my hobby. Responses are very much appreciated, but I tend to forget to look on this page. To make sure I see your message, use the personal messaging system, or olvandgame [at] gmail.com
And thank you for nice reply :)
Thanks a lot, Twilly :)
Thanks, I will!
Wow, thanks for the compliments and the like! I'm thinking of pricing the game as a 'cheap indie' (around E10,- ?) in the end, but I don't want to ask money at all before I succeed in making players play the game for longer periods of time.
Depends a bit on what you mean by 'released', but you probably mean: when will I stop inviting people, and open to game to everybody. I will do that once I succeed in making people play more than just an hour or two. That is, when I have something 'addictive'.
And thank you for your compliment!
Thanks! I defintely will.
Hi, thanks for your tips, o pre-check or something might be a good idea! But then still I need to find out which versions OpenGL won't work ;/.
Hi Kaytavo, super-sorry to hear that. I'll try to help you out on the forums :/
Thank you, that's very good to know :)
Haha good luck :P
Yeah, sorry the waiting list still is way too long. I'm doing everything I can to make it shorter.
I actually agree. Later, the worlds will be filled with randomly generated plants.
Of course of course. You should see these stairs as a precursor of what's coming :). Remember this game hasn't even reached alpha stage yet.
Olvand is in pre-alpha at the moment; the only way to play this now is by requesting an invite at olvand.com, but I should warn you that the waiting list is quite long. The game will go on sale once people start coming back to the game (instead of only playing one of twice).
By going to olvand.com, en requesting one :).
Pubs will be blueprints (like all houses), roads can be crafted directly from softstone :)
Both jukeboxes (that's what you mean, right?) and darts are wonderful ideas, although if I include something like darts, I'll probably make it a little different from the real game - I want all the minigames to be unique.
For the spawn places - I have some special ideas for that, but more about that later :).
Haha nice :)
Good to see I can even create the impression I've got progress when I haven't touched the project for a whole week :P. And congrats Cheesetale, you deserve it :).
I think you might be right that giving the portal a bigger territory keeps the problem away longer, so I'm going to follow your advice if giving portals their own territory is really needed.
About the limited distance: enormous cities is not something I necessarily want to avoid, as long as I can make cities look varied. I am actually afraid the other thing will happen: 300 cities on every server with only 2-3 houses. But we'll see :)
Thanks for your comments, very interesting!
Haha, interesting proverb ;). And great!
Not sure, actually, I haven't had any complaints ;). I think when 2-digit players tried to reset their accounts, the server got confused and did nothing. Anyway, like MartanZ said, it's fixed now.
That would be fantastic :)
Haha, another proof that I need to make this more clear ;).
I plan to completely reimplement the dresser, but not before you can build banks (as in financial instutions).
I haven't heard of any people having issues with graphics cards, so I think it will :).
Thanks! I'll you to my list of playtesters, so you'll be in the future tester groups.
Like Twillypop said (thanks ;) ): see olvand.com! And thanks for your interest!
You deserve it. Thanks for all the help ;).
I've sent you an email :)
It doesn't work for me either. I contacted Desura about it.
And you deserve a lot of thanks for this wonderful comment :).
You're in the next group I plan to invite, so relatively soon. How soon I really can't tell, because that depends on how well things go with the current group. Let's say 'as soon as possible' ;).
Not yet - but it's definitely something I want to add in the future. I'd love to see people riding animals they've discoverd in the wild and tamed themselves. It's quite a big feature though, so it will take a while ;).
Well, I'm going to start the testing anyway, so don't worry ;). It's just that it would be so much easier if there was a server that's always online.
You will receive an invite via Desura, and Desura will notify you via email. Or, if your question was: 'in which group am I?', than the answer is 'the group invited in phase 3'. :)
Me neither ;)
Thanks for this great suggestion! I'll have to think about this a little more, but at the moment I'm leaning toward doing it like you said; you're probably right in that it leaves the exploration aspect intact. A counter-argument would be that not giving the conditions would frustrate completionists, but those people would probably use wikis anyway.
And your first RSS feed? I feel really honored :).
I try to update often indeed (about once or twice a week), and there are smaller updates on Twitter (@olvandgame) in case you're interested.
Yeah, definitely. Rewatching the video doesn't recreate that thrilled feeling I had during the match at all. But I'm currently composing some battle music, so things will change!
And it indeed looks very daunting (in particular the pro gun I showed), but everybody who tried it understood it in less than 60 seconds or so. So that won't be a problem, I hope :).
I will, thank you for the advice! And I understand you get a lot of similar games, I'm not angry or anything. It's still great what you do for indie games!
Not yet - I've been waiting for access to Desura for over a week now, but they tell me they are flooded with games at the moment.
Wow, thank you!
That's good to hear! Thanks!
True and true. I started out with the Pokemon style as main inspiration, but I've never managed to really develop something new out of it. I'll see what I can do in the future.
Haha, building good bots would take months, if not years. However, I agree that the lack of people to play with is a bit problematic; I plan to add minigames which can also be played alone once I'm done with the city building stuff.
Haha, nice :). What Desura calls 'released' is actually the date on which the game was first available for download, but still nice.
I plan to add a new article within a few hours ;). The original plan was to add Thursday evening (like usual), but I was out of town.
Hey, if this game makes me enough money to buy a Mac I will probably try, yes ;).
Yeah, the weirdest things can be found in Olvand's lakes ;).
Hi, a review would be great! You can sign up for a beta (or actually it's pre-alpha) on olvand.com, although the waiting is quite long :(. I'm doing everything I can to make it shorter!
Hi, I'd love to give you access to the game, but I feel that would be kind of unfair to the roughly 200 people on the waiting list. I let people in in small groups. If you subscribe on olvand.com, you'll be in one of those groups.
Hmm, the link didn't seem to work: Indiedb.com . And Joey, you can always click the reset button to get the started items back!
I know, it's a horrible bug, see this forum message for more info: Desura.com I already uploaded a hotfix to Desura, I expect it to be accepted within 12 hours.
Works! And the thing you mentioned has already been fixed; I've sent you an email with the details.
*keeps fingers crossed*
No problem, play whenever you want. About the servers: Testserver2 seems to be down, but Testserver 1 is still up. Maybe it's something with your router, virusscanner or firewall? In any case, if you need more help, please ask on the forums, so I can reserve this place for more general comments about the game. Thanks! Wessel
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The map generation is extremely simple at the moment; later randomly generated species of trees, plants and animals will be added. Remember the game has not even reached alpha stage yet. The clustering actually is on purpose.
Did you subscribe on the website?
I'll add you to my list of playtesters :)
It will be invisible in the final game. For now, it's too useful for development-related things ;).
There's quite a long waiting list for invitations, but I'll add you to that list, so you'll be invited in the future :)
Ah, I see :). I'm currently doing closed pre-alpha testing; I invite people in small groups. If you/your friend wants an invite, you can subscribe on olvand.com.
Thanks! You're already on the list ;).
Of course, I added you to the list :).
The demo version? I don't know anything about a demo version, are you sure you're commenting on the right game? :P
Hi, yes, I looked up your address and it indeed is on the list. Thanks for your interest!
