I live in Nijmegen, developing games is my hobby. Responses are very much appreciated, but I tend to forget to look on this page. To make sure I see your message, use the personal messaging system, or olvandgame [at] gmail.com
Thank you for this peptalk - I really could use one! :)
I know the feeling :)
Haha thank you :).
It's actually 'Alot and buggy', but yeah :).
Haha, in my imagination ;). I do all coding, pixel art and music myself.
Would be awesome; let me know!
Thanks! *eats waffles*
I'd never heard of Fantasy Online, but you're right! I see the similarities too. There are a lot of differences as well, though.
Yeah, of course, there must be other people with my problem; I didn't even think about that. Also, thanks for your pointer, I'm definitely going to look into that!
Haha the word you're looking for is 'nemesis' :).
I did some research here, and it turned out you were right: for recent members, some achievements were not configured correctly in the database. The game assumed this meant you completed them (so new players started with 5-6 achievements already completed), the website assumed you didn't. It's fixed now, so you can try and get these achievements too!
Fishing: bind a rope to a branch, go stand near water and hit e. Make sure the line tension is not too high or too low by clicking. If you have more problems, please ask on the forums and people will help you out :).
It's not too late ;).
Sorry, I missed this comment completely! The answer: I don't know either. There are quite a lot of people in the waiting line at the moment, and I invite groups of 100 people every time a new update is released. New updates are only released when they're done (so no set-in-stone release dates). The next update will arrive somewhere next week, I expect.
About the persistent characters: hmmm, that would have quite a lot of implications for how you play the game, so I need to give it some thought. Interesting, though.
Here: Indiedb.com . Sorry, my link pointed to the wrong place, I've fixed it now.
Yeah, the weirdest things can be found in Olvand's lakes ;).
It will be invisible in the final game. For now, it's too useful for development-related things ;).
Of course; you can sign up at olvand.com, but you can of course also tell me you're interested here :).
Then I shouldn't take long :)
Have some patience :). You submitted your email address, right?
Hi, I'm sorry, you can't. I'm inviting people in small groups, to keep everything under control (as it's an online game). Let me know if you want to be in one of the next test groups!
Excellent comment, I'll respond to it in this weeks blog post. Sorry for the late response, btw!
That's not a bad idea, actually! :)
Thanks a lot! And about the donate button (and I can't believe I'm going to say this), I feel a little uncomfortable receiving money while I'm not even sure if I've got a playable game. Once the bugs are fixed, the game turns out to be fun and enough people want to play, I might switch to the Minecraft model. Could you save your wads of money until then? :P
Thank you! I will!
Yeah, me too. Yesterday I sent an email with a very detailed description, so we'll see. And if not, well... things are going to be more complicated and time consuming, but I decided not to give up.
That sounds incredibly familiar, I really like to follow game development myself. It's so exciting to see how games slowly get bigger and better!
I will need testers very soon, actually, and I will definitely contact you :). The features above will not yet be in the first test build, however.
Thank you, that's very good to know :)
The next beta group will be invited once I finish implementing my new graphics and lighting engine. It's hard to say when that will be (I don't know where the problems will be beforehand), but I expect within a few weeks.
By requesting an invite at olvand.com :).
Google tells me that ETA can mean hundreds of things, but I guess you mean 'Estimated Time of Arrival'. My estimate (which is almost meaningless, because they are rarely true, in both the positive and negative way) is that it will take me 4-6 weeks to finish the first version of Glux, and implement it in the game.
Hi OnlyOneTone and daddya, thanks for your interest! You can sign up for an invite on olvand.com :).
Hi, sorry to hear that, but it's definitely something fixable. Could you send me the exact error message in a personal message, or post it on the forums? Thanks!
Haha good luck :P
Mmm, yeah, you want something like full screen for now, which is indeed alt+enter. If alt+enter opened the chat tab, my guess didn't push them at the same time. Could that be it? If not, please open a topic at the forums Indiedb.com I'll help you there. I want to reserve this place for more general questions and comments :).
Thanks! And your English is perfectly fine.
Haha, well, temporily (as this is a weekly blogpost).
Yeah, sorry the waiting list still is way too long. I'm doing everything I can to make it shorter.
I wish I could hit the + button more. I know (from experience :P) this gun is incredibly powerful. If somebody ever creates a wiki this build deserves its own page.
If you want to play with others, don't forget you have an unlimited number of invites at olvand.com ;).
Indeed not yet implemented, but they're high on my list now you can build things which need a lot of material. Not sure if they'll make the next update, though (but thanks for the reminder :) ).
Allright, good luck. If you have any bugs to report, please do so in the forums Desura.com
Not at the moment, but thanks for the offer. I'll keep your name in mind.
Excellent question. The answer is because the chance of more people playing online at the same server at exactly the same time is relatively small if a game doesn't have hundreds of players. Even very popular indie games have this problem. The solution is to simply wait for others to join (people often join when they see somebody is already playing) or to invite your friends (there is an invite feature on the website).
Very nice review, and thank you for the compliments! :)
I actually agree. Later, the worlds will be filled with randomly generated plants.
Of course of course. You should see these stairs as a precursor of what's coming :). Remember this game hasn't even reached alpha stage yet.
Olvand is in pre-alpha at the moment; the only way to play this now is by requesting an invite at olvand.com, but I should warn you that the waiting list is quite long. The game will go on sale once people start coming back to the game (instead of only playing one of twice).
By going to olvand.com, en requesting one :).
And thank you for nice reply :)
Thanks a lot, Twilly :)
Thanks, I will!
Wow, thanks for the compliments and the like! I'm thinking of pricing the game as a 'cheap indie' (around E10,- ?) in the end, but I don't want to ask money at all before I succeed in making players play the game for longer periods of time.
Depends a bit on what you mean by 'released', but you probably mean: when will I stop inviting people, and open to game to everybody. I will do that once I succeed in making people play more than just an hour or two. That is, when I have something 'addictive'.
And thank you for your compliment!
Thanks! I defintely will.
Hi, thanks for your tips, o pre-check or something might be a good idea! But then still I need to find out which versions OpenGL won't work ;/.
Hi Kaytavo, super-sorry to hear that. I'll try to help you out on the forums :/
Pubs will be blueprints (like all houses), roads can be crafted directly from softstone :)
Both jukeboxes (that's what you mean, right?) and darts are wonderful ideas, although if I include something like darts, I'll probably make it a little different from the real game - I want all the minigames to be unique.
For the spawn places - I have some special ideas for that, but more about that later :).
Haha nice :)
Good to see I can even create the impression I've got progress when I haven't touched the project for a whole week :P. And congrats Cheesetale, you deserve it :).
I think you might be right that giving the portal a bigger territory keeps the problem away longer, so I'm going to follow your advice if giving portals their own territory is really needed.
About the limited distance: enormous cities is not something I necessarily want to avoid, as long as I can make cities look varied. I am actually afraid the other thing will happen: 300 cities on every server with only 2-3 houses. But we'll see :)
Thanks for your comments, very interesting!
Haha, interesting proverb ;). And great!
Not sure, actually, I haven't had any complaints ;). I think when 2-digit players tried to reset their accounts, the server got confused and did nothing. Anyway, like MartanZ said, it's fixed now.
That would be fantastic :)
Haha, another proof that I need to make this more clear ;).
I plan to completely reimplement the dresser, but not before you can build banks (as in financial instutions).
I haven't heard of any people having issues with graphics cards, so I think it will :).
Thanks! I'll you to my list of playtesters, so you'll be in the future tester groups.
Like Twillypop said (thanks ;) ): see olvand.com! And thanks for your interest!
You deserve it. Thanks for all the help ;).
I've sent you an email :)
It doesn't work for me either. I contacted Desura about it.
And you deserve a lot of thanks for this wonderful comment :).
You're in the next group I plan to invite, so relatively soon. How soon I really can't tell, because that depends on how well things go with the current group. Let's say 'as soon as possible' ;).
Not yet - but it's definitely something I want to add in the future. I'd love to see people riding animals they've discoverd in the wild and tamed themselves. It's quite a big feature though, so it will take a while ;).
Well, I'm going to start the testing anyway, so don't worry ;). It's just that it would be so much easier if there was a server that's always online.
You will receive an invite via Desura, and Desura will notify you via email. Or, if your question was: 'in which group am I?', than the answer is 'the group invited in phase 3'. :)
Me neither ;)
Thanks for this great suggestion! I'll have to think about this a little more, but at the moment I'm leaning toward doing it like you said; you're probably right in that it leaves the exploration aspect intact. A counter-argument would be that not giving the conditions would frustrate completionists, but those people would probably use wikis anyway.
And your first RSS feed? I feel really honored :).
I try to update often indeed (about once or twice a week), and there are smaller updates on Twitter (@olvandgame) in case you're interested.
Yeah, definitely. Rewatching the video doesn't recreate that thrilled feeling I had during the match at all. But I'm currently composing some battle music, so things will change!
And it indeed looks very daunting (in particular the pro gun I showed), but everybody who tried it understood it in less than 60 seconds or so. So that won't be a problem, I hope :).
I will, thank you for the advice! And I understand you get a lot of similar games, I'm not angry or anything. It's still great what you do for indie games!
Not yet - I've been waiting for access to Desura for over a week now, but they tell me they are flooded with games at the moment.
Wow, thank you!
That's good to hear! Thanks!
True and true. I started out with the Pokemon style as main inspiration, but I've never managed to really develop something new out of it. I'll see what I can do in the future.
