Nice one Alex. And I think you've hit the nail on the head with this:

"It's a lazy, short sighted attitude which asks gamers to gamble on a game concept, rather than the game itself."

We'll see if we get it right with Killing Floor 2. If we've got it right, people will be helping us balance the game. Maybe find a few bugs that made it through QA and beta testing. But we aren't going to ask anyone to bet on the concept, or even a vertical slice. That sort of crap belongs in Kickstarter or equivalents - Early Access is for people to buy something already playable, that will clearly benefit from community feedback.

You mean, apart from replacing all the player models, all the monster models, all the weapons, adding new weapons, reworking some of the core mechanics, taking a lot into the native code, building out an SDK... ?

What else did I miss, Alex :) ?

We don't allow Hotmail email addies, much like others don't. Sorry. Helps keep the griefing down :)

And, in answer to your your points 1 through 4, "Yes" :)

Alex's point is well made: the best mods are indeed junior games, just with no real way to make it out to a wider audience. It takes either a complete rebuild on a licence-free engine, which would take a long time and therefore cost a lot of money - or use a licence-paid engine such as Unreal.

And where have I heard the whole "Its a mod, why should I pay for it?" thing before :) ? It WAS a mod and is now converted to a full standalone engine so that ANYONE can play it. This won't be expensive, but it costs money to do all this - and if people want companies like Tripwire to stay independent, then they have to expect us to charge for games!

As for reviews and the quality: take a look at the material released so far, watch what comes out over the next few weeks.

And the comment on RO not being updated... well, we have released roughly one major update every 3 months for a full 3 years, plus a ton of small fixes. Without Steam, there would be no RO at all - never mind all those updates!

And, yes, we expect to have it available in stores as well...

This is a very old chestnut: just about any voting system is open to abuse, not to mention a vast amount of disagreement from the losers :)

At the end of the day, what the ModDB team have is the simplest system. Of course the Mod with the largest following should win - but isn't that the point? What people are trying to achieve is to get profile with their work - and that is represented by their fanbase. Of course it is hard for those mods that work off a base game with a very small following - but those are the choices people make when choosing their game engine!

Good spot, Doggy - have to admit to finding that kinda funny myself :) Does this mean that Smitty would prefer to hand off his key ;) ?

Just think of the locations you can use as sources for maps...

The Whitgift Centre in Croydon...
Any JD Sports shop :)

Commit mindless petty crimes in order to get enough money to buy nasty beer, smokes and wider wheel arches... You could run the "biggest fuckwit" compo - who can do the most damage to their 1996 Ford Fiesta while attempting to ram-raid the nearest offie??

"OO's got the biggest ****** mutt" competitions...

Weapons such as the bottle, for sure... plus "isapitbullinnit"... does knocking bike couriers over count? TDM becomes last-man-standing, literally - just drink each other into oblivion :)

So many possibilities - and the voice-acting !!

Then, you could always enhance it by adding in other interesting and arcane elements of British under-life... Millwall fans, drunk Geordies (map the Bigg Market, someone!!!).

Yup - endless possibilities here, even if no-one but the Brits will understand a blind word of it!!

@ INtense: thanks for clearing that up for everyone, mate, and apologies from the RO crew for the misunderstanding! It was one of those dumb things that happen...

A quick correction from the RO team:

We have won the FPS prize for Phases 2, 3 and 4 of the MSU contest, plus some sound prizes - but not the whole thing! We wish :) But the winners haven't been announced on that one yet and we still have our fingers crossed!

Well, we're really sorry - RO was logged as a "Sports mod" sometime back in the dim and distant past. Since been corrected, but obviously too late for the comp!

International Online Soccer and Deathball should be read as being in 1st and 2nd places in their category, really...

First off, I lied - its a 14.5mm beastie... sorry

Secondly, it weighs in at an indelicate 17.3 Kg (38 lbs) which really doesn't make it too terribly easy to lug around. And it is very long, single-shot, bolt-action. So, unfortunately, rather cumbersome. Its armour penetration capabilities are way out of date too - it might knock a hole in a 1940 light or, if lucky, medium tank - but no chance today.

However, gawd help any poor sod who got in the way of one of its rounds  !

Yup - the PTRD is quite a beastie... fires a 12.7mm round, with a muzzle velocity of 1,000 m/s. Packs quite a punch :) For the anal amongst us, it hits with about 10 times the impact of a standard 7.62mm sniper round. That would be an "OUCH" ;)
