Game designer, programmer and international man of mystery :) I am currently making and/or have previously made games using Game Maker, SDL, SFML, OpenGL, OpenFL, Löve2D, Slick2D, Unity3D, NME, HTML 5, LWJGL and LibGDX. Only a small subset of these projects have every been published: they can be found below.

This is why you avoid using C# from the beginning :P
I recommend you go back in time and never learn C#: instead become comfortable with C++. Then in the past you can write the whole game in C++ and not have to worry about Microsoft -to use the technical term- "owning your ***" ;)

Sorry: shouldn't be mean since you're clearly going to a lot of trouble to port the game to Linux and Mac. It's very nice of you: many developers wouldn't bother. Thank you for your time and effort - it really does mean a lot to us poor finished-game starved Linux-users :D

Coolness :-D

But...

I'd love to be loving, especially since you're supporting my platform, but I'm a little sceptical by nature. You've got a guy who can draw bloody well and another guy who comes up with cool ideas. But this is a game and games lives or die by their programmers. Without programmers they're just pretty art and cool ideas, but not games.

Hell, the other three guys could be programmers for all I know, it's just that I've seen a ton of promising-looking project like this shrivel up and fail. Course THAT DOESN'T MEAN THIS ONE HAS TO! This is not a turkey-slap, this is a reality check.
Number one piece of advice of all time is to keep it real. Don't bite off more than you can chew. I've got plenty more clichés where these ones came from. What this means in practice is: concentrate on the few little things that will make this game truly great, and cut the rest. There are 5 of you: feature creep is your single biggest enemy.

More than that, I'd get something very basic and very ugly **playable** asap and work from there. This should keep morale up because you'll already have *something* cohesive to show for your work. And it'll be a game, not just concept art.

That said, I'm rooting for you :-) I hope it goes great! So best of luck to you all - you're gunna need it :-P

PS - to anyone thinking of jumping on me for "damaging the team's morale": if a post can damage the team's morale then this project has already failed. Period.

Give the guy a break: programming's a bitch :-/ Okay, so if you're indie you're in it for love, but the thought of a little money at the end of the day is always nice.

Still, making people pay to test something is a little strange. Perhaps it should be *phrased* differently. "Getting to participate in the *exclusive* alpha" sounds better than "paying to find bugs", and that's pretty much what most mainstream multiplayer games do these days...

Thanks warsztat :) Sorry I'm so slow to reply. As for a bit of constructive feedback (now that I've finished the game), what really needs to be done is balancing. Trouble is it's hard for this kind of game, since abilities can be combined in all kinds of different ways.

For example, I ended up with Flaming Fragments, Explosion and Fire Mastery on such a high level that, when I finally unblocked Spark Rain, everything and everyone I encountered was instantly varporised!
The only thing that could really threaten me was my own missiles exploding nearby, Flaming Mantle's sparks hitting me, or those damn electric hands!

Still - I'm not saying pwning everything in sight wasn't good fun ;) I might try doing an electric build at some point...

Very cool, polished (Polished?) game XD

I wouldn't mind having a look at the source since I too am working on a top-down shooter, though nothing this sophisticated (yet). By the way, there are a few music tracks I recognize: are you sure they're all free to use?

Anyway, keep up the good work!
