You can easily find tutorial sites, that give you a basic run of modelling. This however is the very tutorial that could help you, stick at it and be persistent, it's a long 8 pages, but it explains: Basic modelling, the spline and line tool, as well as the boolean tool (Which in terms of planar modelling are the most commonly used tools):
