Adding detail really comes down to what the area would be used for.

If it's a storage area for example, then crates are the obvious choice but try not to go nuts. You could also add trash and stuff lying around.

Also, it's open to the elements so you're going to need drainage as well. :P

I agree. This is an open outdoor area which see's a lot of combat, but only accounts for about 15% of the whole map. The indoor areas contain a lot more detail.

The map was made in a few hours though so I'm not ashamed to admit it isn't especially well made. :)

It's really up to the developer whether or not they show gameplay videos. Our project has been in development for around the same amount of time and while we certainly COULD show off gameplay footage, we've chosen not to.

I kinda like development videos over just regular gameplay footage. That way you can get an idea of the features that will be included, while at the same time letting your imagination run wild in terms of how it will effect gameplay.

None that I can think of on MODDB because they never got that far. A few GoldSource HL2 remakes have popped up on some of the mapping communities I used to be involved with and every single one failed when it came to the rather crucial element of physics.

That font is way too uniform to look hand written. You should try warping it a little.

Also, that last sentence is odd. The hesitation (it.. it..) is as if he is speaking, whereas if he was writing he would know in his head what he was going to say: e.g. "Ink just doesn't suit my personality very well."

If he was writing quickly or hesitantly, he would probably blot / cross out the mistakes.

Well, I downloaded this expecting it to be bad and was unpleasantly surprised at just how bad it can get.

I don't quite understand, from a goldsource mapper's point of view, how some people manage to make maps with this many errors in them. A whole ruck of missing faces on simple brushwork, as well as some curious carving issues and jutting out brushes that look about 1 unit thick. Were these maps made using the smallest grid size? It's the only explanation I can come up with. Very poor practice all round.

Also, the stupidity of the AI in some sections is pretty incredible. The grunts are pretty smart enemies in terms of the GoldSource engine, yet here, the final engagement before the god awful ending was with 8 grunts, all of whom were trapped behind their desks by their own chairs. *Slowest clap ever*

The first engagement is impossible on hard mode with the machine gun (which looks like an M26... which is a shotgun but whatever). I simply ran through it. There is no way that you can take on the choppers, and judging by the number of scripted deaths that feature in this mod, I dare say it's intentional.

No fun whatsoever, especially during the slow cutscenes spliced in throughout.

I assume this is a visitor entrance of some sort? I'd maybe tweak it a little.

- That ladder should be locked away, maybe with the cleaning trolleys in your earlier shot? Someone might hurt themselves.
- The stairs could use a railing. Safety first. :P
- Maybe another seating area this side of the concrete divider? There's a lot of unused space.
- Maybe add some posters or information on the walls. It's a little drab and depressing at the moment.

My thoughts:
- What is this room used for?
- The stairs are a safety hazard. Add a railing or some form of barrier.
- Those tables are enormous. How did they get them up that tiny stair case? Maybe add smaller tables / desks.
- Those 3 screens on the wall look a little lost. What are they there for and what are they connected to?
- Those cleaning trolleys should really be locked away in a cupboard shouldn't they?
- Those computers are all clustered into one corner, meaning you have to walk all the way to the far end of the room in order to work on them. Why not move some to the other wall and spread them out to fill a little more space.
- Overall, it just looks way too empty. You could maybe break the floor up into separate labs.

Urby Aug 23 2013, 8:13am replied:

That's kind of a double edged sword. You need to consider both the community's reaction and the developers own sense of achievement.

A lot of the time, when somebody uploads an image of something they produced in couple of minutes, some randomite from the community, who may or may not have any development experience could jump in and say "OMG AMAYZING! MOAR MOAR!"

It's a well known fact that the worst thing you can do to an artist (after all, 'games are art' nowadays aren't they?) is tell them that their work is perfect when it isn't. The second you tell somebody that what they have produced is "perfect," they will immediately stop trying to improve their skills.

That's not to say that the community is the cause of the problem. A competent designer should be able to look at their own work and know whether or not they have worked to the best of their ability, regardless of what other people say.

I'm going to use myself as an example once again. Back in 2008, I released 3 screenshots for The Core's mod profile in order to get the page started. People were kind and praised the images and were generally happy with what they saw. In spite of this, you won't see these areas in the final release. Be that because they have either been massively improved or simply deleted. Nobody TOLD me to do that, I just did it because the rest of the mod began to outshine it as it became more and more advanced.

In an ideal world of course, there would be no bad games or mods because they would each be properly tested and the developers would pay close attention to that initial feedback. You could say that with regards to development, the FIRST impression is your LAST line of defense.

...Man, that's deep. I've gotta make a note of that somewhere.

Also, respect the community and it will respect you back. At SnC, we have tried to respond to every comment and answer every question and the responds from the community has been immense and given us the drive to carry on. We have considered throwing in the towel many times, until finally we were nominated for upcoming mod of the year 2012.

That is when you KNOW you need to keep going.

Call me crazy, but I almost enjoyed these. Almost.

Sure the mapping is pretty basic, some of the models are downright horrendous and there were a few sections where I felt just a little overwhelmed by the amount of enemies I had to fight alone.

I like the idea that there was a larger scale war going on while I was fighting my way through the underbelly of the enemy fortifications, but there just wasn't enough visible action overall.

Pretty difficult too, I don't think I got through a single mission with more than 30HP remaining and I had to cheat to pass the ambush at the end of mission 2. It was just impossible.

32 seconds to compile a hallway is definitely not efficient map making in my opinion. A few rooms with a fair bit of detail packed in is fine, but that amount of information for 2 sections of hallway is overkill to the highest degree.
