Just spent the better part of my evening playing this mod and loved it.
My first reaction when I finished it was that I wanted to make a modest donation to whoever deserves this. Is there any way of doing this for modders in general? (official or unofficial?)

It would be a nice if Desura somehow allowed donations to developers, straight from their client, for whoever is interested in doing so.

Shame on you dude. this goes against what this whole community is about.
Desura isn't about cheaping out and getting games for free. It's about providing an accessible platform to modders and less corporate-giant-like developers to reach an audience that would appreciate them, while at the same time making it easy to get these games without elaborate activations and DRM schemes.

If you don't like the game that's one thing, but that doesn't automatically entitle you to get it for free, let alone promote the idea to others. Grow some self-respect; the world doesn't owe you.

I agree. Since this isn't a mod, hence you can't just give it a try, a demo is essential to include here. Please upload one if you can!
Also, if this were multiplayer, if could be a killer game for LAN parties. Food for thought? :)

I just bought Trine for linux from the Humble Bundle offer (I gave $12; $10 of which I assigned to the developer).

This is such an amazing game! I must say, Its trailers really didn't do it justice (which is why I never bought it on steam, even when it was on massive discount), but naturally as soon as it came out on the humble bundle for linux, I bought it at the blink of an eye, and I'm glad I did; I was awestruck from the second I fired it up!

Thank you so much for making a linux version and offering it through the humble bundle!
I wouldn't have missed out on a great game otherwise!

For some reason, the graphics were all messed up for me throughout the game, AND I THOUGHT THIS WAS A GAME FEATURE! ... and I loved it! It made the game a lot more surreal and artistic. There were random scary lines everywhere, the monsters were completely somehow faceless and non-descript, everything was fuzzed out ... it was like being in a scary alternate universe of sorts. Combined with that eerie music, it was simply perfect for me! I thought, "what innovative ideas!" and "amazing how simple graphics such as this can have such a powerful effect" and "I wonder how the designer came up with the idea" ...

I was literally very disappointed when I came back to check the trailers ( to show a friend) and saw that the game was in fact meant to have 'proper' graphics. The 'real' zombies don't look so scary anymore (the blurred non-descript monsters got a lot scarier in my mind!), you can see exactly what's around you, the sky is just a nice sky with stars, etc.

Just goes to show you, fancier graphics isn't always the point, huh?

While community support is not necessarily the answer to compatibility issues and technical problems, Desura is still the best model for linux to thrive on, on account of its user involvement and contributions. If a game runs on linux, and Desura releases a linux client, then even if the 'Automation' systems fail, the desura-linux community will be present on the comments to resolve issues instantly, as has been proven time and time again with linux.

Certainly, a chat feature would make this even easier (though presumably the solution may be as simple as pointing to an official #desura-linux irc channel instead. You can be sure this will fill up with regulars pretty quickly.)

As for the small number of trollish users who feel they need to resort to 'reverse psychology' and 'passive aggressive' comments like "until then I won't buy" etc ... I think I'm not just speaking for myself when I say these don't represent the linux community as a whole, which has otherwise proven itself as a very mature and appreciative one.

It's not that we feel we have any right to demand a desura client -- it's just that, well, if you did, that would be awesome! And the trust you'd show us would most definitely not go unappreciated or unnoticed. I'd bet my right testicle (ok, maybe just the left), the word would spread instantly (slashdot, anyone?) and many linux users would just join and start buying out of principle.

+1 for linux.
While there *are* solutions for linux users out there ( Community.linuxmint.com ), more importantly this would hopefully get the attention of more developers. I would love to see Desura being a driving force and become a major player in this movement. Not to mention that, inevitably, others (e.g. Steam) will catch on, so Desura having a nice lead can only be a good thing :)

@Thoughtquake :

+1 On the "most linux users would buy this as a reflex reaction just because it's 'Tesla vs Edison' *and* runs natively on linux" comments. Though it's sad I had to find out about this game by accidentally logging in to my windows partition. I need to check if Desura works on linux ...

PS. Ignore the 11-year-old asking for this to be free. Though he does raise a good point; this would make an *excellent* addition to the next humble indie bundle Humblebundle.com (where, again, note how much money linux users spend compared to mac or windows users. You've definitely got a market there!)

As for help for painlessly porting to linux, Icculus.org is a good (and apparently friendly and helpful) starting point, and a personal hero of mine, as he seems to have ported all the best games (indie or not) to linux (and, my understanding is, in some cases, without a 'cut', but rather to promote the OS as a viable gaming system, or just because he felt the game deserved to exist on linux.)

The battle-gameplay concept reminds me a bit of that open-source game (that came with the 'humble indie bundle') Lugaru (and its successor, Overgrowth, which is looking amazing). I like the idea of colour matching to block moves.
