A recent influx of stolen content in mods has forced my hand to post this, im duplicating it here .

Copyright and you! ModDB as you may not be aware does have a strong copyright stance, we need to protect you the members from possibly having a legal bat hit across your head and same for ourselves. Staff are always on the lookout for people stealing others work and claiming its there own as well as other shady happenings, as a point we are asking for your help to keep the site clean of thieves.

Examples of copyright violation are:

  • De-compiling/Disassembling content for use in another games engine.
  • Use of another games art assets in a mod without the consent of the artist.
  • Claiming work is yours when it was made by some one else.
  • Taking work from a mod or game and using it in another without consent.

As a important note even if you credit the author of the content used, permission is still needed to use it. Crediting will only cover you if you have permission in the first place.

If users are found to have uploaded content with stolen assets, they will have their account suspended aswell as all their mods, addons and downloads removed, this is a minor slap on the wrist in comparison to large companies reactions that can include legal costs and fines in the hundred of thousands.

If you see a mod with stolen content, please contact us with a link to the content claimed to be stolen for investigation.

ModDB Content Management Staff

Guys seriously, this is getting old. What's done is done, let's just all continue on with the reasons why we're here: modding.

No need to reignite flamewars.

Dwarden is an employee of Bohemia Interactive, and I'm assuming he found out about this thing when a couple of ArmA players started talking about it on the BIS Forums.

There were between 6-12 people who came over to moddb from the BIS Forums and started getting involved in the content theft argument, I'm assuming Dwarden caught wind of it during that time because there was a lot of discussion about it in a few places on their forums.

Dwarden is not a moderator on Moddb, but being an employee of an established video game company carries weight, some actual Moddb moderators caught wind of the controversey from him. As you can see in his blog post

No, I'm serious, that blog post was posted right after I told him about it, I could fetch up all the e-mails sent between me and the moderators on Bohemia interactive and the one between me and Dwarden. I was advised to take the issue to Dwarden, that blog post was actually a comment made made by him in the comment section of the mod in question at first, but then he posted it on his blog soon after.

I provided Dwarden with all the images I deemed suspicious and it was eventually found that it was indeed copyright infringement.

I'm not just taking credit for this to get some kind of name for myself, I honestly believe I was the first to report this to bohemia interactive seeing as the moderator I contacted (named W0lle) first guess for the game being used was to support stolen content was "GTA4".

As I said, e-mails/proof can be provided in any form. Dwarden actually ended up sending me a friend invitation here at Moddb, haha!

@chrono - those pics you sent on dwarven's profile isn't vora's modern pack. that particular mod's name is "cold war" and vora isn't even in the development team and has nothing to do with that mod. get your facts straight. that isn't vora's modern pack.

Yeah, most of the mods do suffer from this, its ridiculous really.
Indeed, many people may not be aware of it, maybe cause they have different rules in their home-place. But still, they should be very very aware that no-one in the world likes to have their content stolen. But hey, thieves are thieves, just like in Real life> There are thieves everywhere. We should have a BIG STICKY or something that everyone would notice at the front page or something, if its not there already. At the very least ask the guy 1st before using their stuff. You would be surprised to see if you ask.

ok this may sound stupid and has nothing to do with stealing game content for another game but it does have to do with copywrite. I want to start a "let's play" channel and monetize it but I'm not sure if I have to get the developers consent or get it through this indie db. Are the games fair use unless stated? I would give all credit to the developers in my videos and even links to download the games in my description. The only credit I would take is the video that I make.
