The game has this ability to give the player a grand sense of awe as you look before a big battle field allowing you to take it on either on foot, warthog (a combat jeep without a roof). The problem is it also started the whole (regenerating health and 2 weapon limit malarky).
The reason why it works here is because you also have limited health that gets damaged after your regenerating shield goes down. So its a dual system that most "regenerating health" games don't include.
Not to mention the 2 weapon limitation works in a game where every weapon is balanced, even some of the better ones have a limited ammo meaning you have to use more wisely.
The tactics involved in how you manage the 2 guns make things interesting.
But at a certain point in the game I was asking myself "what am I doing?" and "why is the game called Halo". Throughout the game it gives you a rather tenuous grasp of what you have to do and the why your doing it is very simple and not very interesting.
Fight aliens, save universe.
In the end the game seems to only include Halo at the end and the explanation behind is quite vague. Storytelling is not Bungies strong point.. or character development for that matter.
"Well of course you don't fight your way all through that, you have to go here or there to get through." This is what, for me, made Halo such a disappointment after Half-Life: just more and more and more of the same thing, and it isn't exciting or interesting, it isn't even adrenaline anymore, it's just tedious.
Nearly every Half Life sequence had a storyline logic to it -- a reason for getting through the bits. Halo you don't get that. I swear they had it done, then the project manager said, 'Hey we need about 3 more hours of game time. Add a bunch of dungeon-crawler mazes and load 'em with more bad guys at every corner.
I do like the fact that the Chief doesn't speak to his fellow marines, it just sort of emphasis how emotionally detached he is and how little their lives mean.

Possibly one of the most flawed mods I’ve played. The story is extremely vague and not much more to say about it, you have an idea as to why your there but nothing is ever explained as to why you are to retrieve the suit or who those germans are but thats not why the mod is average at best. The level design is very simple, blocky rooms galore, to more big square environments with nothing else to distract apart from 2 or 3 APC’s which seem to be almost out of place in such drab levels.
The lighting is poor, its like a dark blanket is placed over the whole mod, even in places where there should be some light.
The gameplay was also pretty average with no real challenge.
I will give this mod some points on the account of new content in the form of some textures and a few weapon sounds and some German taunts… with 3 weapon models borrowed from Team Fortress Classic.
The snarks look a tad lightish red, and the gargs are big shiny monstrous robots with a blue fire guass cannon arms.. machine gun is silenced.
But its a old mod, the textures have aged badly so even they are nothing to celebrate.
The fact is the mod had some good ideas, the German soldiers with superior weaponry, German scientists that try to inject you, big robots (gargs), prototype HEV (which is essentially the same thing Gordon wears just comes with a free Egon), using one of the TFC models as a futuristic hornetgun… but all of it is given to us with a poor story, terrible level design…
the ship itself should have been great as its a unique environment but it to was ruined with big squarish almost empty rooms.
The end fight was bizarre and random, with no conclusion although fitting considering everything else incoherent about it.
thankfully it wasn’t very long.

This is one those times where I think most peoples standards are to low or are being generous in their scores for a first time mod maker. This is basically a corridor fest, where you fight through mostly lab corridors with random crates placed in them, fighting large amounts of enemies with scarce healthkits.
You go outside for short times but then you just see nothing but large shipping containers piled on the sides of your path, along with storage areas with the same problem.
It doesn’t feel like Black Mesa because of the aforementioned corridor syndrome. The level design is terrible, it doesn’t feel organic like it was all just randomly placed. So it looses the claustrophobic feeling it should have along with the details that make mods worth playing.
It also commits the cardinal sin that Black Ops did where you don’t really get to fight with your team mates as you loose them early on, and then its just running as fast as you can from one area to another.
You do meet others but they usually either die in the first fight or your in a hurry to go to the next area so your not going to drag them along.
Its fairly long but only because you’ll be dying, its length is actually average 20 minutes or so.
Hardly worth playing unless you really want a challenge and nothing more.

Buggy, had some of the dumbest AI and the same rinse and repeat gameplay over and over.
You have to pass through every checkpoint to your next destination, everytime it is filled with mercs. As soon as you leave and come back they are there again. And theres a quite a few checkpoints. Not to mention theres no way around them. You can't go over the hill/canyon for some reason. And you can't use stealth the majority of the time, they just see you.. if you get up behind a guy and kill him with a knife, instantly everyone knows where you are.
All of the weapons minus the sniper rifles are terribly weak requiring around 15 rounds to take someone down.
Its got nice graphics, Africa like I've never seen in a game before.. its got some nice diamond hunting, where you find briefcases in secret locations. But aside from that the rest of the side missions are very repetitive. Go get malaria pills, go take out a convoy, go kill baddies... rinse repeat.
if the gameplay could somehow be a tad more realistic, allow interaction with more people and have a environment that was truly open sand box and not have alot of invisible walls then the repetiveness of the side missions I think I could stomach.
As it stands its alot of broken promises.

You have a few key advantages (thanks to Nihilanth) such as greater strength to move around faster, most notably the electric beam can heal you whenever you attack someone… this was implemented to cover the disadvantage of not being able to use human healing devices.
You can also pick up key cards and use buttons & other simple things.
While this new way of fighting puts a fair bit of its use on your lightning attack as you can’t heal yourself with the other weapons. You can still have a bit of fun with them if your carefully.
The mod also tells story a different way, instead of throwing text on the screen like some mods do, here whenever you find something of interest or merely progress, a icon will flash on the screen, by pressing a button you can read what your character is thinking.
Its a very friendly and unobtrusive idea & it fits HL very well because it allows people to skip reading it if they like and it tells alot of story that no mod has yet come close to.
This is possibly the most revolutionary of all the hl mods and stands apart from them in a few key ways.
+The best story of any mod for HL due to a intuitive ‘thoughts diary’ system.
+A wide variety of new enemies as well as a new boss
+5 weapons to choose from, 3 of which are new.
+Consistently good level design
+Diffficulty wavers on medium to tough depending on how well you adapt to this kind of fighting.
+Some secret ‘thought diaries’
-You can’t use human weapons but it would not fit the mod if you could.. but I suppose some people may not like the new way of fighting.
-Due to batteries, healthkits, ammo being useless theres no reason to break crates.
-Some places like the tunnels, although unique, is very repetitive, thankfully it doesn’t last long and plays a part in the story.
-When you first enter the ‘secret base’ on Xen, it appears very repetitive, but it gets alot better after the first few areas.
+-Cliff hanger ending

There is something wrong here... I don't mean the horrendously long development time and all the jokes its suffered over the years... but the game that we ended up getting.
It seems like 3d realms just took some idea from the previous game (duketalk, enemies and weapons) and did nothing to improve on it. Same enemies and same weapons, only difference is, Duke has more to say this time around.
Everything new like Regenerating health & 2 weapon limitation,
just seems to me that who ever made this thing forgot what made Duke great. It was the multilayered level design! Here theres no secrets to find or optional routes to take.
2 weapon limitation makes certain weapons useless because you need 1 that has decent ammunition as well as one that fires explosives to take on bosses. Guns like the shrink ray will see zero use... not to mention less guns means LESS FUN.
Then theres things like Duke commenting on how the Power Armor from master chief is for pussies... yet Duke health regenerates like power armor. Retarded.
Duke says "I hate valve puzzles", yet we are forced to do them anyway.
Then theres the lame turret sections.
Heres what we got
+High level of interactivity
+Hearing Dukes voice again, and boy does he have alot more to say this time around
+A few vehicle sections where fun although would have preffered to shoot and drive at once
+Average storyline with some jokes that are funny while others are hit and miss.
-Linear & bland level design
-functional but bland gameplay
-Health regeneration ruins what challenge it could have had
-2 weapon limitation
-Really bad puzzles that feel out of place
-Lame turret sections
-Unplayable mini games, something as simple as pinball barely works
-The 4 new weapons are some generic alien ones
-Only one new boss
-No Jetpack in single player
+A recently released patch allows for Duke to carry 4 weapons. So thank god Gearbox came to their senses, but even so, it feels like only a SDK can save this game.

Some people have said though that they feel like a lab rat needing to hit buttons on the right order, the only time I felt like that was the second puzzle which basically felt like you had to press random buttons until the bridge was where you wanted it to be…
The first puzzle was simple, only required you to explore thoroughly.. the third was one that merely required alot more exploration. The last puzzle requires the right order of doing things which wasn’t that difficult, I only had trouble in one part and that was finding the sewer entry…. which was a vent right by the center teleporter.
+Very good mapping, lighting, detailed and varied and with lot of new stuff. +Quite good story (supported by text messages, signs, security camera observation),
+Some very nice scripted sequences, also a few cool cutscenes
+ Good atmosphere, supported by occasional music / ambient sounds
+A part with a useable turret and tank.
+A good amount of average to above average puzzles, that really sets it apart from any other mod for HL, aside from the recently released The Trap.
-No combat in the first half of the mod which may not be to everyones tastes.
-Can be confusing in the beginning as its not what players are used to.
-Some minor issues of getting stuck in some places, some boxes don't seem like they break but do...

This is essentially based on someones nightmare, as such, it’s not supposed to make sense, atleast not at first glance. To someone it may have deeper meaning, if they search for it.
Because we aren’t that person all we can do is speculate. It was very short and weird. I’ve never been attacked by what looks like lumbs of potatoes/****/deformed blobs of cancer… and what looks like falling into a meat crushing device.
It’s way to short and doesn’t have enough information to be anything more than a one shot horror mod.
