We had a discussion about this. We all agree that feathers look retarded. This probably has something to do with all of us growing up watching Jurassic Park.

Someday, if we get a modeler who feels differently, they can make a new version, at which point it could be added as an option in the settings:

[x]use kickass raptor models
[ ]use retarded raptor models

Changing this setting would, in that case, change all raptors to have the retarded skin for the player who wants them to look that way. However, the default setting is and always will be the kickass version depicted in the above render.

Yes, it seems our gallery is broken. :P I'll pass that on to our webmaster.

In the meantime, you can just browse the folders to view the images...

Actually, pretty much all of the screenshots on our site (except some in the dev section which you can't access) are old pictures. If you look at them more closely, you will find that the models are low-poly, the joints don't line up very well, etc.

Those pictures were taken at a time when the hl2 engine was still quite new and the models were ported over from the hl1 engine (this mod has been in progress for a LOOOONG time). At that time, the low-poly models were not much of an issue. While it's true that graphics aren't everything, there are some expectations people have these days (including myself).

Anyway, we're getting close to finishing off the first of our MUCH better models, and we'll be sure to upload some screenshots as soon as they're ready.

"the 3 year old picture that was here had been bugging the crap out of me for a long time, and I had to replace it with something."

The old screenshot was 3 low-poly models (which no longer exist) in a level which no longer exists. The screenshot was taken years ago (before various people left, taking their code/models/levels/animations/etc with them) in an alpha version, so the quality was low to begin with. I felt it was a misleading representation of the mod in its current state and to be honest, was below our current quality requirements.

If you're interested in seeing old screenshots that no longer have any relevance to the mod, you can find some in this folder: Dinoinstinct.com numbered shot1-shot6. As you can see from those pictures, the quality of the models/textures/etc was very low.

Don't worry, the mod will look MUCH better than that, because like I said: those are REALLY old screenshots.

PS: if you want to see the screenshot that used to be here, it's called "carnes.jpg" in that folder I linked to above...

Just so you guys know, the crappy map in the background has nothing to do with the mod. I'm a programmer, not a level designer, and was just playing around with Hammer's displacement tool for fun.

Ox is the guy who actually knows what he's doing, and this screenshot has nothing to do with him, I assure you. This screenshot is here to show-off the main menu, which isn't really much of an achievement; however, the 3 year old picture that was here had been bugging the crap out of me for a long time, and I had to replace it with something.

From the summary: "The FIRST three gameplay types we're planning on implementing are..." So yes, we obviously plan on implementing more later, and no, there will not be literal "flags" to be captured in CTF, it would be an egg or something similar.

Another idea we've been thinking about is a game mode where you have to defend/escort a wounded NPC dino to some point on the map, but again, that is not going to be one of the first 3 game modes we make.

We're always trying to think of ways to improve the mod, including new game modes. I invite you (and anyone else who is interested) to stop by our forums and give us your suggestions. Dinoinstinct.com

except without the people and guns, so beyond them both having dinosaurs, I fail to see how this would relate to Turok at all...

Indeed, we are actively brainstorming for ways to keep the gameplay fresh. One of the more interesting (and very difficult to implement) ideas which we are planning on having in the mod is a sense of smell.

Basically, the way this would work is the player will press a key to switch into "Smell-o-vision" mode. When in smell-o-vision (yes, we'll come up with a better name at some point) mode, players will be able to see tracks the other players have left. Players will have to be close enough to the tracks to smell them, and tracks will fade away over time. Players will also be able to smell other players upwind of their current location.

That brings us to wind/weather. We are planning on randomizing the wind's speed and direction at the start of each map. We're also hoping to randomize the weather. Sometimes, it'll be sunny, sometimes overcast, and sometimes it will rain. The rain will really interfere with your sense of smell and force you to rely on vision.

We're still undecided on whether the time of day will be randomized each time the level is loaded as well, or if we'll have separate maps for the different times of day.

So, to summarize, yes, we are constantly thinking of new ways to keep gameplay fresh/non-repetitive. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please stop by our forums and share them with us.

This mod is NOT dead, but people apparently keep reading the summary at the top of the main page thinking it is our news section or something. Seeing as we almost never change the summary of our mod, I can see how inattentive people might think we haven't posted anything new in years. To help these people, I've added a nice big link to the news section at the top of the summary.

From now on, any comment made asking if the mod is dead within 2 months of a DI member posting something in the news section will be deleted.

Also, if there were going to be humans vs dinos, and we were going to write some AI to control the NPCs, the most likely scenario would be you're the dinosaur, and there are a ton of NPC humans with guns you have to kill.

But again, humans will not make it into the mod for a looooong time...

The_REAL_R4pt0r
The_REAL_R4pt0r - - 31 comments @ Dino-Instinct

There are currently no plans to include humans in this mod.

Eventually (especially once some of the L4D code makes it into the SDK), we MAY add a game mode with humans, and whether or not there are humans could be determined on a per-map or per-server basis; however, most people are of the opinion that there should not be any humans in the game, and the current dev team agrees.

We'll only consider it once the mod is at least mostly finished. Basically, definitely not in 2009, and maybe not in 2010 either. (we plan to start releasing public betas later this year, and people will be able to play that, but I don't expect us to run out of kickass ideas to implement for a loooong time. In fact, I don't know if we'll ever "finish" this mod because I'm sure we'll always be thinking of something new to add to it. Who knows, maybe a gametype with humans could be one of those ideas...)

I don't think we've decided yet, but I think looping would make sense, and silence at the end seems like the best way to do it.

Keep up the good work :D

Hey, I'm a second-year comp-sci student and know some C++. It seems your mod is dead, but I was interested in helping. I tried registering on your site, but you seem to have a PHP syntax error in your registration process. When I try to activate my account, I recieve the following message:

"Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/hldino/public_html/forum/includes/usercp_activate.php on line 115", so I can't register. Can you administratively activate my account or fix your PHP somehow? Or is this project truly dead and will never see the light of day?

Thanks for your time,
