Monochrome LLC Founder & CEO but probably best known as being the Founder and Lead Developer of the very popular HL2 Modification Zombie Panic: Source. --- （。ㅅ。）
See a bit of it with Jessica, Eugene, and Marcus as well.
We understand that to and will do our best to be patient, explain, and leave it to them to understand or not. Can't force ppl to understand.
Contagion may be Full Released but we have our budget set aside to continue working on the game for a good long time while including our Free DLC (New characters, weapons, maps, and game-modes). This may or may not help - Steamcommunity.com
Animations are limited by the current system but we're working on a more advanced layer system for the 1000+ Player/AI Survivor and Zombie animations that we will continue to add in with our updates like the SDK for our modders this Sunday. We couldn't hide behind "Early Access" forever and are use to ppl ignoring the AAA bugs and forgetting we don't have their numbers or budget. Still I understand your view point and promise you won't feel that way for long. We're quite dedicated.
Will be doing so :)
death: got you covered there too :)
Definitely not. We are confident that the price will definitely be accepted as both affordable and fitting.
The Scope posed quite an issue with a number of shaders. We were determined to resolve this and Dec did a fantastic job working non-stop.
It was our pleasure. Was great seeing everyone's expression especially those that got the game they REALLY wanted by chance haha. We will of course be doing another one in the future as it's a bit of thing for us. We love Indies.
We agree and this won't be an issue on release.
A gutted and mostly rebuilt version of Source. The things you can do once tiers are available to you.
Good stuff D
Great list. I really want to try Miasmata
Kickstarter is something we are still discussing but FPS's have had poor luck with it and unlike many others we want to be very clear what the funds would be used for and how they benefit those pledging. Appreciate your support!
That it is, hope to hear some of you have a chance to visit our booth!
Drop unused ammo means ammo for any weapon not in your inventory.
Appreciate the positive responses and thank all those who have been patient with us as we focus heavily on getting all sorted for PAX and the playable demo.
Can adjust settings in options if you feel that way, though obviously we prefer it as is. Scale wise and design wise they're nearly perfect and were redone repeatedly for accuracy alone. Glad you like!
The team is looking forward to seeing you guys at GDC as well as revealing the media prepared for our attendance later this week on IndieDB!
I'm happy to say I own most of these and those I don't I'm very interested in checking out. Great list and congrats to all of those in the Top10 as you bloody well deserve it!
We do not currently have a release date but when we have one it'll be hard to miss and listed on our profile. It is an Indie game and not a mod. As for the AI I'm sure you'd feel differently if you had a chance to play but we're still in Alpha so the final product should feel just about right for most.
Yes they 'can' :)
Can't argue that, but won't stop us from getting caught up in this years awards and sharing content through the month of December. Looking forward to seeing much more from other Indie Developers and Modders myself.
It doesn't resemble any part of ZPO_Subway with the exception of stairs but I agree it resembles it more than it does L4D
do not listen to this man! Next thing you know we'll have zombie sharks with with shark tooth knives and lasers (major points deducted!)
As we stated in the description everything you see has been updated, as for the number of zombies I set a limit through our unique spawning system for sake of convenience and again not to reveal too much. As for damage while it's still being tweaked zombies are quite tough but you'll notice I aim for the head which we felt was important when every bullet will count and you won't have all that ammo sitting around. Though that being said again we do have an Ideas & Suggestions thread Monochrome-games.com for exactly this sort of post so it doesn't get lost in traffic. We look forward to revealing more soon.
Best of luck guys, you really seem to be giving it your all and as fellow Indie I would love to hear an awesome success story with both titles.
You can view some of the sculpting done on this character in our videos section but I will also ask Josh our Lead Character Artist when he has a free moment (we rarely do but we try :D) to possibly go into a bit more detail in explaining the process.
Same here, nice work guys. I like how FF is leaning a lot more in their own direction.
Keep up the good work guys.
The donations and aid (not aids Awesome_ninja) is appreciated. Doing what we can from Kyoto ourselves. A few friends lost theirs places but they're safe and with family.
Was a big fan of the mod Age of Chivalry and this definitely looks like a much more attractive version. Will definitely keeping an eye out for a demo/free weekend *hint hint* to see what else is new. Congrats and keep up the great work.
We did this to both support Desura and for those who prefer it. We will continue to update both Steam and Desura with future patches, it's up to you which to use. I think Desura is a great application and appreciate it's goals and honestly don't see the harm.
Glad to hear it as that sounds quite a bit more interesting and appreciate the clarification in regards to whether or not a card game heh. Would be interesting to learn more about the team, goals, and what you're looking for in regards to development. It also helps if you post whether it's a paid position or not (though I assume like my own Corporation our initial game is out of pocket and not yet funded like so many Indies). Tracking and loooking forward to more.
Could be to feel the waters in an attempt to gauge interest, provoke curiosity in people like Moci so one may be talked in helping develop the project, or just creating a profile so it's there with the bare minimum and ready for when they put out proper announcements and/or media. Though I agree it does feel a bit early since a lot more could be done by a writer alone.
Very impressive. Definitely getting my vote for IOTY. Well done.
Quick, delete your reply before the spam! heh
They've never shown how many votes a game or mod received. I'm not sure that'll change this year.
Looks great, i'm sure it'll be another hit for Tripwire and I look forward to seeing more from Teotl Studios.
Remember guys this is here as a resource and just to emphasize what others may be thinking there are other methods of rigging and in fact our in-game weapons were all rigged and animated by Swolf while this tutorial was done by Marks the man behind all our weapon models in the hope of helping those interested in learning. We hope that you find our tutorials insightful, for others enjoy the accent.
Guys, read the description. These are old WIP in-game vids. We aren't ready to reveal our current setup. Enjoy.
Dys...Eufloria would be my choice. Zeno Clash was attractive and definitely original but I lost interest fairly quickly. Eufloria is both unique and provides plenty of entertainment. Was a great idea.
Awesome stuff Benn...
The good ol days. I played way too much ZP:HL
Awesome list. Think this fits better than last years popularity contest :)
He was asked to reskin (what you see is the reskin) so it didn't make it into this patch but will be available for v2.1 in maps. Will be hitting you up soon razor but now I must sleep x.x appreciate the compliment :D
Total conversion on the ep1 engine.
Actually been putting time into Sourcemod support. Visit our IRC and/or Forums for more information.
Survival Horror is dead? That's just silly nonsense.
Wow, really great list. I'm finding it very hard to pick one from any of these :/
I'm really looking forward to Curse the most though. But anyone of these I could see winning.
Looking forward to seeing the pick, good luck.
Very interesting read. Definitely like to see more of these.
Far from it! :D
Nope, when zombie died a lil cube would drop. You could pick it up and it would show up in first person as zombie hands. heh though it was fixed (broken) so it's no longer avail :)
Funny in early testing you could pick up the zombie arms when they died and use em as weapons heh
No but seriously, talked to some of the other developers and i'm very very excited to try out their mods once released on steam.
Exceeded 5 mins and couldn't edit my previous post :P
I'm personally gonna play _Not my mod_ first. Honestly I've missed 2 titles of the 5 only because I've spent all my time working, modding, or raising my kids. But will definitely be trying them all out this weekend.
1.2 - 1.25
Thanks guys :) and yes recently just found out.
Thought it interesting that this would rank #1 today on Valentines day. Exactly 1 month from V-day is White Day in Japan. I wonder if its the same in Korea. The mod looks great, could use some work on textures, level design, and sounds but the over all atmosphere is great and very creepy. I love the style and can't wait to see more soon.
I know there are a few "mods" imitating Zombie Panic for Half-Life. Including Zombie Survival. I was pointing out that I thought it funny that our Source version should be accused of imitating mods that imitated the mod that started it all which is ZP.
Yes, but Zombie Panic: Source has taken the time to resolve this issue (vets grabbing all the best weapons). As for head shots being the only means to killing a zombie, it may be the most popular way but isn't the only.
Yes it is a Kukri machete thus why I labeled a machete and not knife. But always a pleasure for those who try to educate.
Thanks for the comments. I think in this upcoming patch people are gonna feel entirely different about playing zombie. The game is incredibly fun now and I can't even play on public servers anymore cause it feels so slow in comparison. Then we have the content patch coming out afterwards that will hold a lot more stuff. I think I sleep on average 8hours a week now heh.
For those of you that get PCgamer UK check our article out and post a scan someone :D
Nicely done guys. Was hoping to hear more about "The Hunted Chronicles" but that aside I enjoyed the topic of discussion, the ZPS plug, and hearing what the PV team had to say :)
Indeed we plan to add quite a few more. Thanks :D
Please visit our forums and read our tech support thread. If you're problem isn't mentioned please reply with details :)
Much appreciated, You guys are gonna love this upcoming patch :D
It's coming along nicely. Looks great. If I can find some spare time i'll do what I can to help.
Unfortunately you can't make everyone happy. This list is pretty solid.
I really can't wait to play. I'm a huge Sci-Fi fan and this looks to be more my type of game.
Speaking majority not all.
I really like the style and art direction.
"The list focuses on projects that have been pushed to the sidelines in a flood of constant media and news updates, yet merit some of their own time under the spotlight."
Nice selection. Looking forward to Infinity and The Hunted Chronicles!
Congrats guys :)
Thank ya big-big :)
They said Monday :)
Because it wasn't released during voting. Can't vote for an unreleased mod as a released mod. We released at the end of voting to make sure we didn't lie to our community and release in 2008 when we promised 2007 so we released last possible moment while still keeping our promise. The announcement was a month later.
This is true but I had to try :/ Though I find aliens a tad more creepy <.< >.>
I'm going to finish with this and be done commenting in this section.
1. Tributes to our favorite games and/or movies.
2. Additional story lines or parallel worlds to games/movies we enjoyed.
3. Simulations of real world conflicts which might be popular but doesn't mean its been done the same way before.
4. Unique and semi-original worlds from our own imagination.
5. Whatever we want to make.
For the most part we do this for ourselves but we also do it for the community and for no profit. Our mods are free to all but ourselves where we spend money maintaining our sites, forums, servers, etc and spend our weekends and free time after school/work to create something we want to play. We're grateful for those that support us and sites like ModDB that let our hard work shine. We didn't create these mods to win prizes and when we do it doesn't make our work any less valuable. I'm not a fan of Commercial title remakes but no one but the copyright holders have any say in this.
To all ModDB award winners since 2002 great work and congradulations! To all those mods who have never won an award. I look forward to playing your games and hope you enjoy mine, goodluck in 2008! Don't let anyone discourage you from creating your perfect world or in my case perfect nightmare.

Remember unpopular doesn't mean it's original, it just means... it's unpopular. I was sad to see however no Unreleased Indie game category this year as I was looking forward to Chris's "The Hunted Chronicles" which is really shaping up nicely. Need more voters to vote on multiple categories so quality Indie games like his don't get over looked.
No I don't mind that you call my ZOMBIE MOD a "zombie mod" as I stated previously. That's exactly what it is... Why would anyone be insulted by this? As for Zombie Panic being original and unique we were one of the first ever MP Zombie game/mods released and the first ever to introduce player controlled zombies. We have moved to source and just recently released our mod for the 2nd time, but that doesn't make our work any less original when it was ours to begin with whether or not others imitated the work. They Hunger, Zombie Panic, NMRiH, and D.E.A.D all got an early start and are the reason "Zombie Mods" are popular and are themselves quite original for when they started no one knew much of anything about Zombie Games besides a few classics. Something to be proud of and a rather sad attempt at an insult lol.
"In fact, since there are so many zombie mods and they wind up winning every year"
Seriously atleast research before you open your mouth, Zombie Panic: Source is the first ever Zombie mod to win one of these awards thus far and seriously there are hardly that many Zombie mods. Headcrab alien controlling a dead corpse is not a "Zombie Mod" that would be a"Science Fiction Mod".
I can't help that no one is interested in your mod, and just cause you call it "original" haven't read/seen anything original but not my point, doesn't mean its fun. Your mod is visually unappealing and sounds extremely boring. Unlike you I won't pretend to be the voice of everyone (which obviously you're not hehe) but I will say that you're making a fool of yourself by trolling. Should be proud of the work these modders have done, the time they spent on their mods when they could have been spending the time with their families, out with friends, or just relaxing. For some modding is a hobby, others a chance to get their foot in the door. You've already been corrected for falsely accusing 2 mods of "cheating" and/or breaking copyright laws. Stick your foot in it.
The reason this has always been a problem is that you want games that have no user base or community interest winning awards cause they got 3 votes and no one else cared to vote for anything but games they actual play and enjoy. Some variety couldn't hurt but you're always gonna argue "well my game is special" For example when we created Zombie Panic we were a unique and original mod then more and more zombie mods came out and while I love this cause I'm a fan of survival horror games our original idea is all of a sudden "another zombie mod" lol. And how do you decide what genre is what? I mean most people arguing over genre/variety in awards are pretty much your standard FPS HL2/UT2k4 mod with some gimmick like cellshading and cheesy hand to hand combat action. It's not a new genre its just done differently like every single FPS out there can claim. Sounds like an impossible task to split everything up and still be fair and have mods actually work for their awards. Rather than pleasing a small group of ppl. This year was a good year and I am quite happy with the results. Player choice should be that Player choice. Though I guess if possible some categories like
Players Choice Released/Unreleased (majority rule)-
Editors Choice (want to hear from the staff)-
but at the same time not dilute things. Categories need to be pretty open to allow enough competition in for the awards to matter.
"Cheat" Which was investigated and proven not to be the case. :) Thank you INtense! for the support and clearing these accusations :)
I can't prevent people from making false accusations. And I see nothing wrong with INtense or ModDB investigating said false accusations. But it doesn't change the fact that they are false accusations. So get your "facts" straight :) I have no problem saying that Intense used the wrong sentence in replying to those comments. Your trolling isn't gonna make your mod any better :/
That's called "slander" making up false accusations either based off rumor or out of spite and only proves that you're quite bitter. Again why waste ours and your time when you could be doing something productive or is it you're incredibly insecure and are lashing out as a means to vent or justify your insecurities?
You're welcome to assume what you want but I made my observation over the fact that you seem to be upset that people like these games (thus being chosen as top 10 by players) and that they're not completely original (as in they use themes that have been done before). I guess once it's been done there is no room for improvement, or that others can't make a version that fits their vision of it. As for calling my mod a Zombie mod... What else could you call it? City mod? Gun mod? I mean it has those too, where's the insult in that label? We started it so why shouldn't we improve on our own work?
Again i'm all for unique and original ideas (which I believe my mod is guilty of even if others imitate it) but your idea of what the modding community should do doesn't necessarily mean it's the right thing to do. And this Award show is just as legal as donations so take a deep breath and spend all this wasted energy on making your mod worth playing, instead of trying to discredit modders and their work. And seriously? Zombie mod? lol
Well to be perfectly honest it doesn't matter what the winners fall under as they were chosen by the majority of players "Players Choice". FYI Zombie Panic was the first MP Zombie mod and the first to include player controlled Zombies and other features that are only now popular with zombie mods. If you're bitter cause your mod or the mod you prefer wasn't placed, I don't see the point in complaining here or see what you're trying to prove.
I wish I could tell you that it's a problem with ZPS and that I knew how to fix it but it sounds like server issues or your connection to that specific server. Let me know after trying a couple servers in your area.
If there is a way, I wouldn't know how. This is a mod specifically made for the PC version of HL2 :)
Oh I don't mind. Just saying that Gmods Zombie mod and the CSS zombie mods are imitating our original concept and HL1 mod Zombie Panic. Which in a way is quite flattering :)
The video was recorded awhile back to show off that it was in a playable state and intentionally toned down. I've seen triple A titles with less action so still don't quite understand the "Mod" comment but I figure that'll be settled later with future updates and the release of the game.
We will reveal features in time but if there was a barricading system it would definitely be an improvement over ZP:S or at least what we consider to be an improvement.
It's still early and I appreciate you sharing your point of view but it helps to express things a bit clearer as constructive criticism so others might not get confused. Cheers!
The zombies are the same height as the players and the height of the players view was matched to the eyes but will keep that in mind this week as I hold daily PTs and updates with Declan and other developers as well as our weekly meeting.
I'm sorry to hear you didn't care for our HUD but I have to say the team and I really took a shine to it. As for the guns you say "could be a bit more fat, they're kind too thick" I'm going to assume you meant to say too thin. The weapons are accurate but as always game-play > realism and it has been worked on :).
As for game-play there wasn't much of that shown so it would be hard to judge considering it was 1 player vs AI (that was toned down for convenience) but we tried to express that in our description so you wouldn't make the mistake of prejudging too early.
I've been a modder for 15 years and when a mod no longer shares textures, lighting, sounds, assets, anything at all beyond the Engine (that has and is being updated all the time) I'm not sure what doesn't look like mod. Maybe you could be a bit more specific?
We can win everyone over but we hope you'll stick around as the team is working hard to bring you a truly unique and atmospheric zombie survival horror experience (again not through this video. Think of it as proof of life before we demand a ransom).
Congrats on the announcement. Looking forward to seeing more in the near future.
Just run ZP:S and it will auto-update.
Make sure you didn't some how install it to the wrong location. Check your \program files\steam\steamapps\sourcemods\ folder for ZPS also make sure to restart Steam so it will show up in your games list.
You can't play online if you're in offline mode. His concern is when steam is having another of its problems he's unable to login which makes online play impossible till steams problem is resolved.
I think the answer is quite simple and obvious. No one can stop me from making a mod that imitates or rips off an existing idea commercial or not. It's my choice so long as I don't sell or profit off the idea. You can't ask an artist not to draw pictures of his favorite game character or a kid to stop dressing up as the Terminator on Halloween.
I don't really care for mods that ride on the popularity of the commercial product they're basing their game off of. However, they have every right to do as they wish. It's just plastic army men and legos on a new level.
Modding started out as something to extend the life of games by adding new maps, new content, new whatever the hell you wanted to keep a game interesting. Now that modding is a lot more popular people are creating new games, games of games that should have been, etc.
When I open up Hammer, Max, or Photoshop "I WILL" create whatever I want to create. Not a damn thing anyone can say or do to stop me. I may not be able to sell what I made but for most of us it's not about the money.
For everyone saying "No" you're saying no to-
Comic Strips (and anything else) that reenacts scenes in games/movies/novels/etc.
Us modders who still have original ideas can still coexist with those who just want to play the scenario they always wanted to play out.
