Although you can make a light weight version of the material which can float on water, its not suitable as a body armor as it will bend inwards and break your head or chest upon heavy projectile impacts.

I am curious as to how it would fare against firearms,I know that a 556x45 and blow a hole clean through a few inchs of standard concrete, and a 7.62x39 can absolutely demolish it.

Most of the time, projectiles get stuck in it. It can take far more bullets than regular concrete and will not disintegrate easily but it also depends on the thickness of the material. The penetration depth of projectiles fired at it is similar to standard concrete but the damage is usually localized with ECC while with standard concrete it spreads all over the place and cracks the concrete. Thus ECC can take much more bullets before it breaks.

Description

This is Bendable Concrete, the technical name for it is Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC). It was developed by Dr. Victor Li in the University of Michigan during the early 1990's. It looks and feels like concrete but behaves like metal. Ive been researching this material for about two years now, and it was the subject of my master thesis. This thing can take 17 times more impact than high strength concrete and is very suitable to stop GLA attacks :P
