All I know specifically is that the main main characters (Frodo, Sam, Gandalf...) are in the game. I dont know which evil and ancillary characters are included. This post from the developers has some pics of the hero units: Twcenter.net

The unique cities aren't possible to build, at least not easily or quickly. Mods are about changing and editing the existing script. In M2, all cities and castles must follow the same basic structure. Thats why they all look the same during battles. In order to create a custom city, you have to CREATE now code completely from scratch. This is more than city code but also unit code (units wont be able to interact with a special city), and siege code. In addition to making this new data, you have to make sure it didn't make the battle unstable (ctd) or completely unplayable. Data relies on other data to work. If you change something that wasn't meant to be changed, or do it incorrectly, you have a broken game.

That happened to me with a different mod. The best thing to do is make sure M2 AND the expansion you are using are fully patched. Also, make sure no other mod is using the M2 program files. Third age should then be fully patched. If you edited files yourself (available factions, unit damage, etc) you may have made the game unstable and you must uninstall everything and start from the beginning.

The best way to fix is start with a vanilla copy of M2 and expansion, patch, install Third age, patch, and play.

No. Each expansion is totally separate from the others but the purpose of using it is for the basic script and data. You could mod the original game, but it would be much harder due to the larger amount of data.

An increased risk of crash when main game used because data relies on other data for program to function. Editing one piece causes other pieces to become unstable. The expansions have less data that could become unstable.

It means only one kingdoms expansion (Americas, Teutonic, Crusades, Britannia). When you run the Kingdoms disc to install, you can choose which ones you want to put onto computer. Third Age requires that one of these be installed, but it doesnt matter which one.

2.0 will overwrite all older versions so you don't need to uninstall anything. Personally, I want a fresh install of Third Age in case the overwrite misses something so I deleted everything. 2.0 isn't save compatible so I don't need to worry about preserving my campaigns.

That is a weird problem that I have had with other M2 mods. It was caused by a faulty installation and you need to reinstall everything (including M2 and patches) from beginning. Also can happen if you have another mod installed or if you edited the game files.
